DS really disliked being put down for about the first 2 months or so. I just had to do stuff while he was sleeping or when DH was around to hold him. He is now 4.5 months and I can put him in his little chair in the same room as me for maybe 20 min or so before he starts to get agitated. It's difficult to replace loving arms with an inanimate object :) I can no longer do much while he's sleeping as he takes very short naps and it's not worth attempting to put him down.

the k'tan saved me. We also used the rock and play so she could be close to us when we sat and watched TV, ate, showered and cooked. A&A swaddle blankets and crinkly books helped distract her.

I have a 7 week old who is exactly the same way. We even have to co sleep because that's the only way he will sleep. I wear him in my ring sling to get things done. He hates the swing and will only sometimes tolerate the rnp for like 5-10 minutes.

I feel so much solidarity with you gals... My dd also refused to be horizontal. It was only the moby wrap that she tolerated. She only wanted to be upright except if she was in a milk coma but she still had to be on top of me. :(.

We used the k'tan every day! I felt like I couldn't even wash it because I didn't want to go without it for even that long. The rock n play worked for maybe 20-40 minutes, if we were lucky, during naps. I loved wearing him though! I miss it now..

Moby wrap ftw. She's now gotten used to the bouncer (babysitter bjorn) and is good at independent play on her activity mat. But the first couple months it was Moby or held!

you just described DD when she was an infant!

we lived and breathed the ergo for 16 months... but whenever i needed hands free, i could always count on these things for 20-30 free minutes here and there...

newborn stage - just the ergo, i even went to the bathroom with the ergo on. couldn't set her down anywhere!
3-5 months - putting her in the crib and turning on the music mobile.
4-7 months - the jumperoo

7+ months - nothing really since she started sitting up, pulling up, and being more mobile so life became easier!

@bhbee: For the ergo, try skipping the insert and use a rolled up thin blanket or a prefold or two under his bottom. It doesn't feel as bulky but helps them stay froggied nicely.

Just now at 3.5 months she will chill in the swing for a bit. Now that she is more interactive she is ok with being laid on a blanket on the floor oddly enough, we just have to keep singing and making faces at her! If she is in a good mood she will sit in this while I cook or eat (both is pushing my luck!) http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Deluxe-Sit-Me-Up-Floor-Seat/dp/B00F2MQ294

Grand total though she might give me sixty minutes a day so I can commiserate! My husband jokes that her evolutionary survival skills are a bit too honed- she will never be left alone long enough to be eaten by a wild animal!

@sorrycharlie: Do we have the same baby?!

There's no gear that really does it for H. The Baby Ktan and Moby wraps have been lifesavers for me. He is a totally happy baby when he's held, and very displeased when he's not. I have a toddler as well (who, like your first, was not a cuddly newborn) so I do have to put H in the RnP or swing for brief periods a few times each day while I tend to him, but other than that it's easier and happier to wrap him up!

My baby is a cuddle addict. I love it, but it can get a little tiring. He LOVED the Boppy Newborn Lounger. He would happily chill on it with me just in the vicinity. He also really like the Snugabunny bouncer, but it took some time.

He slept at night in the Graco Little Lounger (he obviously liked things with the name Lounger in them...). He was not a RNP fan - I think the incline bothered him.

I'm not sure if there's anything that helps, but thought I should ask! LO#1 was pretty independent - liked the paci, pretty happy to be put down in the baby seat after her needs were met, easy to put down when drowsy.

LO#2 is a cuddler (which I love) and wants to be held all the time and sleep next to us. of course I get that kid when I don't actually have the ability to do so as much! he will sit in the baby seat for 5 minutes tops, and usually ends up upset. right now he's only 3 weeks and starting the fussy period and I fear what it will be like when he wakes up more. not a fan of the paci either.

if you baby was like this, did a swing, rock n play, etc help to allow you to do things like make dinner, change their sibling, put on makeup, etc? I wear him some too (which he likes) but my goal is really to be able to truly put him down. I know it's sort of individual to the baby but looking for a place to start. thanks!!
