My sweet kitty died suddenly last summer. I was completely blindsided and devastated but we adopted two kittens (siblings) shortly after Thanksgiving to keep our other cat company. All three are BFFs now! We want a chance to get attached before we lose one, so it doesn't feel so much like a replacement dog. We'll continue to do the same with others. Having their ages just a little staggered helps because they won't all die at once. (I make it sound like we have so many. My first cat that was all mine passed away and I was so incredibly heartbroken I swore that I would never have another pet because I couldn't put myself through that kind of pain again. It took me about 9 months to feel ready to get another pet (a dog). Now I feel like I'm even more attached to my dog than I was to that cat because I've had him longer, and my husband had 2 cats who are super cuddly and I love to pieces. I lost my fur baby who was 13 after Christmas, and we adopted one 2 weeks later (could not pass up an offer, there was a litter of 10 lab puppies surrendered to a rescue and we took one). Now we have a 1.5 year old and a 3 month old! (and a baby on the way! She's a lab and it's tough to take her everywhere because not everyone likes dogs, especially around kids. Ours is also a rescue so she has some issues with other dogs and some people so that always makes me nervous. We currently have a very chill, laid back old man dog (11.5 years!), who is fine with the baby. DH wants to get a puppy eventually, and I am NOT having a puppy and a infant. Our plan is to wait until the kids are old enough to beg for one, then we can act like we are getting it for them, even though DH and I both definitely want to be a dog family :) </p> <p>@bushelandapeck: We have similar issues-- when I got my dog I lived near my family so it was easy to have someone mind him when we went away.
