@autumnlove: Ooh, that could be rough if your mom isn't ready -- hopefully he can hold back for a little longer! Would she be open to starting slow? Maybe instead of going to a rescue shelter, they could look through some of the photos on Petfinder.com of animals who need to be adopted in their area. She can gauge how she feels about it and maybe one will jump out at them! That's how we first started looking, and then we eventually went to a rescue location. Losing a pet is so hard :-(

We always did growing up, but I don't think I would if one of my cats passed away. Not for a while at least.

Right now we aren't in any position to get a dog, but both my parents and ILs lost dogs that were 15+ years old in the last few years. They've had opposite reactions; my ILs (who always have multiple dogs) got a new one immediately, and I really don't think my parents will ever get another - she was really special and my dad says it was just too heartwrenching to open his heart up to a new dog and go through all that again at some point.

I don't think there's anyway that I could wait more than a month before getting a new dog. My house would feel so empty without a dog in it!

We lost our dog two years ago, and I'm just now (within the last six months) feeling pretty confidently ready to look into getting another one. DH still isn't there. Right now isn't a great time for us, but I'm hoping in a few months we can start to foster dogs who are waiting for adoption. That seems like a way to ease back into ownership (we already dog sit every chance we get).

Our dog passed away in November (she was also 17) and I know that I want another but am not quite ready yet, but we also have another dog. If we didn't have the other dog I'm sure we would have already adopted one!

We had two dogs when our cat died. DH was all for getting a new cat, but I kept saying "the next creature that enters this house is going to be a human." We knew we would be TTC soon and I thought three pets and a baby would be too much. I absolutely would have gotten a new cat if we didn't have the dogs.

We've always had more than one at a time. So when one would pass we would feel bad for the remaining one. So typically within a few months. Although when my cat died it was horrible way to go. So I swore I wouldn't get another one. My sister-in-law rescued a momma cat and 2 kittens. Guess who ended up with 2 out of the 3. Yep this girl! I'm done after these. I can't take the heartache any more when they go.

We had a dog and cat and our dog passed away in July a couple years ago. He actually passed away about a month before our wedding, so DH and I didn't really have time to think about getting another animal. In addition, we had changes in our job that made it so we were away from the home longer than we did before and getting another dog didn't seem realistic.

We ended up getting a second cat in October, three months later, but what prompted it was our cat got really depressed after our dog passed away and needed a companion. Now our two cats are BFFs. I miss our dog every day, but not enough where it prevents us from getting another one.

Our 9 year old Labrador just passed in February and we aren't talking about it yet. Besides the fact that we have a while to wait for the breeding pair we're interested in to actually be bred, puppies are hard. Also, we'll train our next Lab again again for hunting, which is an extensive process, so we're putting it off for now. Maybe later this year?

With my parents last two dogs they've waited about a year between. If it were up to my mom it would've been sooner but it takes my dad longer to get over things.

We did, pretty quickly. After a few months without our dog the house just felt so empty and sad. It was also around the same time we were struggling to conceive. We were going to wait but ended up seeing some puppies and falling in love with one. Our new pup has already helped us heal in many ways.

I'm the type to want to move on, so I would get one pretty quickly. My mom's dog died almost 10 years ago, and she's only just now ready to even consider getting another. So we're very different there. I feel like the emptiness of having no dog would be harder than not having my old dog that I had loved. She felt the opposite.

My DH's dog got hit by a car in front of him when he was around 6 or 7, and he carried it home. He was so traumatized he was never interested in another dog until I wanted one when we got married, when he was 23.

I would be a crazy dog person if my DH didn't enforce a limit. Our cat died a year an a half ago and we aren't getting another one because we also have two dogs. If one of my dogs die, I don't think I would wait long at all to get another dog. It would probably depend most on how our other dog was doing in that case.

My parents' dog died last April and they were heartbroken. They both said they would never get another dog because they didn't want to go through losing one again. They're getting a new puppy on Saturday :) I think after a while they just couldn't stand being at home without a dog in the house.

When my dog was hit by a car and died I was traumatized. Full blown hysterical tears for a few days. He was mine and my husbands baby at the time. I was in love with that dog. But we got two new dogs less than a month after, and we both started to move on, and feel a bit better. I really don't think I would have been able to accept my dogs death as quickly if I didn't have the new ones to look after.....

My cat passed away in August (back in 2013) and we adopted two new cats in November of the same year. My cat was only seven when she died and it was really unexpected so I was completely devastated. Honestly, I'm still really upset about it. We decided to adopt our new cats because our remaining cat was clearly lonely and needed companionship, but it really did help with the grieving process to get to know our new little guys. It's hard with your parents not being on the same page, but I do agree there's really no right or wrong answer!

We almost always had 2 or 3 dogs, so it wasn't as hard of a decision to make (there was usually a pet left behind when one died).

some losses were easier to get over than others though. There was one dog in particular who was so beloved, it was probably several years before we rescued another one.

Did you end up getting another pet? How long did you wait?

My parent's dog passed away in January (at age 17!) and my dad is ready for a new dog (he wants to adopt from a shelter) and my mom wants to wait. I know there is no right answer but I am curious how long you waited!
