My practice had 3 doctors and 2 midwives. For prenatal care, they made me see all of them but I mainly stuck with one midwife I really liked. But they also share a hospital with another office (same practice, different area) so I ended up with a midwife and doctor from the other office. It didn't really matter because the midwife I ended up with was seriously awesome. She somehow made cervix checks not uncomfortable and really went above and beyond. I kinda want to switch offices the next time bc she was so great.

the first OB's office i went to probably had at least a dozen doctors, so they suggesting making appointments with different doctors as the pregnancy progressed. we moved when i was 20 something weeks along, and i happened to find a practice with just 2 doctors. if either of them weren't on call, they had an agreement with another 5-person practice. i totally wasn't expecting to go into labor on the day my doctor was on call, but he was, which was nice. in the end it would be have been fine with him or someone else.

In mine you see one doctor for all your appointments, but you get whoever has hospital hours when you're in labor. My doctor did my delivery but a different doctor did my aftercare.

We have to see all doctors at least once throughout your pregnancy, because like yours whoever is on call will deliver you and they don't want it to be someone you've never met.

My ob has 4 doctors and I saw one only once..... I don't like her. I just hoped she wasn't on call for delivery and she wasn't. The other ones I saw often.

@birdofafeather: Ditto! We are sure the nurses could have just delivered our baby! The on-call doc was in there with me for maybe 5-10 min. pushing max. Spent more time on the stitches.

I had a practice with 4 OBs so I met them all throughout my visits. I lucked out and the one I liked the most was the one on call. She was only there for literally 30 minutes though. It was all about the nurses!

I had never been to my office until I got pregnant - my regular doctor was a GYN only and 30 minutes away (close to work/where I used to live) so I needed an OB close to home/the hospital where i planned to deliver. So i didnt have a eegular practitioner there who i had been seeing. They have 2 OBs and 2 midwives and I rotated among each of them so that when d-day came, I'd be familiar and comfortable with whoever was on call. I had my favorites but in the end was cool with whoever (but totally ended up getting my favorite midwife so it worked out!).

My OB office is the same way. I see an OB who may or may not be on call the night that I go into labor. Chances are he won't. There are around 7 OBs in the practice. I've only met one other one so far.

In my office they wanted you to meet with everyone at least once, then you could schedule with whoever you wanted after that. The goal was to make sure you'd met everyone since whoever was on call would deliver. The practice had 4 females and 2 males... in the beginning I wasn't very happy about seeing the males, but they ended up being my favorites. I lucked out and one of them delivered J.

@JoJoGirl: I am local, but I am happy with the practice I'm going to. It's just that as I was thinking about trying to see more of the midwives, I started wondering what's normal among other practices. Plus the MW I liked best I think just came back from maternity leave so I might try to go back to seeing her anyway. NWH is a little too far away to be convenient for now though I hear great things about it.

My practice has 4 midwives and they intentionally DON'T give you a primary caregiver for that reason. You rotate through all of them during your appointments so you know everyone before you give birth.

My OB's office is comprised of 5 different women OB's. I would always see my OB for visits, unless she was called out to labor or one time she was on vacation. She had told me from the get go, she would deliver my baby any day except for Wednesdays because that was the only day she didn't have a babysitter. In that case, the OB from her office on-call would deliver. Of course, I delivered on a Wed. But my OB was the one who came and checked on me the next morning.

There are 2 doctors in our practice. I made a point of seeing both so I would be comfortable with whoever delivered our LO. We got lucky and our doctor was the one that delivered LO. If LOhad been born a few hours later we would have had an on call doctor.

Mine sounds like @mamabolt: 's practice - there are multiple midwives. You can try to schedule your appointments with the same person or rotate, and whoever is on call will deliver your baby. Given that I wouldn't get to pick who would deliver me anyway, I've opted to rotate and have the easiest time scheduling my appointments. I've met most of the midwives now, and while I have some I prefer, I haven't met any that I would have a problem delivering my baby.

My practice has 3 midwives, 2 or 3 nurse practitioners and 8-10 doctors maybe?

They rotate your prenatal appointments around the entire practice so you get to know as many of them as possible. You get whoever's on call. The day I delivered I didn't know one of the doctors and the midwife who ultimately delivered L.

It didn't really matter to me anyway bc at the hospital I delivered at, you spend the most time with your l&d nurse.

Also, at my practice, I think that one of the more personable docs is kind of a doofus, medically... And one of the "colder" docs saved my friend's life - and her daughter's- when her uterus ruptured.

My practice has 5 doctors and 1 midwife. You have at least 1 appointment with everyone, but mostly you see whoever has an available slot for your appointment time. Whoever is on call is who does the delivery, and they have a partnership with 2 other small practices to help if things are especially busy in L&D.. Luckily, I the doc on call was the one I loved the most and who I see for regular check-ups.

My OB's practice has 5-6 doctors. I saw my OB 95% of the time (except one same day appointment when my doctor was in surgery and a routine appointment when my doctor was on vacation).

My doctor delivers most of her patient's babies, unless she's out of town, or otherwise unable to deliver. At their practice, when you go into labor, you call the doctors office. The doctor on call meets you at the hospital and evaluates you and keeps your primary doctor in the loop about how you are progressing. When you're getting close, the doctor on call pages your regular OB and they come to deliver the baby.

When I went into labor, my OB was already at the hospital (she just delivered another baby). She kept tabs on my during my labor and came to my room several times. When it was close to time to push, she came back to the hospital to deliver LO!!

My office was similar. It is a smaller practice with 1 midwife and 2 OB/GYN's. For most of my pregnancy I saw the midwife, but they strongly recommend that you schedule at least one appointment with each of the OB/GYN's in case they happen to be the ones to deliver. I ended up not liking the one women very much and the other was my regular doctor. When my induction was scheduled for LO my midwife was on vacation (it was over Easter weekend) so she let me pick which doctor I wanted from the remaining two and scheduled my induction based on their schedule over the holiday.

My midwife practice has 7 or 8 midwives and whoever is on call when you go into labor will deliver you. You can have all your appointments with one midwife or rotate through them. I decided to rotate through since I would rather have met them all prior to going into labor.

My OBGYN practice is the same except no midwives- the doctors all rotate delivery based on who is on call. They have 3 offices but deliver at one hospital, so there is a HUGE chance I won't know the doctor who delivers me. You can make appts with whomever you want, so I always just tell them when I want to come and take whoever's available. I figure I have to get used to that.

I saw my OB for all prenatal visits with LO but I switched to the practice around 20 weeks....I think I would have seen his PA or nurse practioner for some of the earlier appointments. My OB wasn't on call when I was induced and I saw 3 different Drs during my 36 hour labor.

I have seen two OBs (my regular one was out of town for one visit), one nurse and a PA for my current pregnancy. My C-section will be performed by my Dr...if I stick to schedule! :-)

@Foodnerd81: that's exactly how my OBGYN practice works. Luckily the office is right near my work so I can pop out for appointments with my doctor (who I LOVE) whenever I can schedule an appointment with her. I did get to know the other doctors from being pregnant and delivering twice, and I have my favorites and my not-so-favorites. My first delivery was with a doctor I liked, so I was happy, but my second delivery (induction) started off with my second favorite doctor, which I was thrilled about... then there was a shift change and my doctor delivered LMW! I was SO HAPPY!!!

At my birth center there are three midwives. You see all three throughout your pregnancy on a revolving schedule so you get to know all of them well, and then whoever is on call at your birth is who delivers.

I have a favorite midwife and told her I wished I could guarantee she would be at my birth, and she gave me her personal number and said to call her when I go into labor and even if she's not on call, if she can she'll come in. :)

At my office you see your primary care the whole time and then whoever is on call delivers you. But all of the doctors are "on call" for themselves during business hours so if you deliver during business hours you'll get your own doctor. During my second tri it turned out that my primary was out of the office for a while because she was in a car accident so I actually ended up seeing her partners during that time. But I was lucky and delivered at 9:46am on a Monday and so my doctor was there with me.. which I was so thankful for because I trusted her so much.

At my doctors office you see your regular gyn for the first few visits (if you want) and then they want you to see the other drs in the practice throughout the pregnancy. At the end you can go back to your main dr if you like. I thought it worked well and I ended up preferring another dr. She did my csection and i'll be seeing her from now on.

The office I spoke with yesterday said there you have a primary midwife overseeing your case, but they have you see each of the midwives in the group at some point during pregnancy because then you'll be at least a little familiar with whomever is on when you deliver. Before the midwives didn't have 24/7 so there was a chance you'd see one of the drs they work with, but now one of them is always there.
