I will usually read it but if not then we just look at the pictures together and describe what's going on together.

There's no way I can even attempt to speak it in Chinese plus I can't read the characters so I just make something up. Or I'll ask DH what the gist of the story is and do the best I can.

It depends how hard it is, ha. Sometimes I read it and I'll do alright if it's not a hard book, sometimes I just mangle on through, though I will try to get DH to help me with the pronunciation if it's a book she wants regularly, and sometimes I just translate it to English (I can read it better than I can speak it). I like translating sometimes because I think she understands English better at this point so it might help her get the gist of the story better once she hears it in both languages.

I narrate the story in English, like I do with wordless books. And then I tell LO that I get to pick the next book!

It's the other way around for us (I can read the Vietnamese books, but the hubs cannot)-- if C brings him a Vietnamese book, he just translates or reads the English parts only (most of our Viet books are bilingual).

We look at the book and speak about it in English. We're starting to have more complex German books and while I can read the words, I can't translate off the cuff completely.

I read it in the other language. I figure that maybe I will learn something from it as well. As J has gotten older there are some words he never says the english version for, so it's good to pick up the smaller words they might use regularly when they first start really talking.

...what do you do when your LO one wants to read books in the other language? If it's a language you yourself don't speak?

My baby girl is nine months and just starting to pick out books herself, and I'm wondering what to do when she picks out a book in the second language (probably a third of our books are non-English). At this point I usually just grab another one, but sometimes it's a clear favorite and besides I'm not sure this strategy will work much longer. Sometimes I translate (still totally doable in this baby book phase--sample text: "Hi, kitten!" Got it). Sometimes I try to read the language even though my pronunciation is bad... What do others do?

Just to be clear--I'm not worried about this, I'm just curious what others do!
