I had to wean her at about 16 months to TTC (dr's advice). She was so attached, it was very traumatic. I think that kid would have nursed to college :silly:

@PurplePeony: so I just went back and reread my thread from two months ago- pretty much exactly what you are asking!
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/weaning-at-18-months
My friend whose son is 18 months was saying the exact same thing this morning. I guess it's a phase that a lot of boobmonsters go through!

@PurplePeony: looking back I think that was around the age that I was feeling the exact same way- tapped out, needing my own space without someone always grabbing at me. Then she got through whatever she was going through and went back to her usual patterns and I happily continued until she weaned at 20 m. But yeah- I understand just being totally tapped out.

@PurplePeony: at 20 months he was still a boob monster and we had to wean because I was just done!

I told him the milk was all gone, no more, he cried and cried but never asked again after that

Thanks so much, everyone!

@Foodnerd81: @Cchoi4: @bpcmarj: @ALV91711: your stories give me hope! I don't think I can keep up nursing much past 2 so I'm REALLY hoping she stops on her own before that. Right now, she's going through a separation anxiety/cling-on phase so I'm feeling a little tapped out, which is probably what prompted me to ask the question...

@Pirouette: haha, why am I not surprised? I kind of wish our girls could hang out together, I bet it would be hilarious.

DS was a total boob monster and I dreaded the day that I was going to have to wean. I planned on starting after Christmas at 21 months. After about 14 months we only did morning and night.

Then one weekend at 20.5 months he refused to nurse and never asked again. It was something I never expected to happen but was glad that he made the choice.

All the stress of planning to wean for nothing.

My son (32m) is a complete boobmonster and always has been. Now that I'm pregnant with my 2nd (34w), I just assumed he would wean when I dried up halfway through....but he dry-nursed straight though and is still nursing now.
Part of me is ready for it to be done, and part of me isn't. Right now I think I'm holding on because some of my only "down time" during the day is when he lays on the couch with me and nurses. It's not the most comfortable thing, but I can nap through it sometimes haha. I still keep hoping he'll self wean...but I'm not feeling positive on that anymore.

We are like @Rockies11: and down to 3-5 sessions a day at 20 months! I don't know if she will ever self wean because she just loves it so much! I have a girls trip planned for the beginning of May for 3 days and I'm hoping that will wean her off! But last time I was away, I got home and she immediately went for the boobs, so we will see what happens this time!

My daughter would still be happily nursing at almost four, if I hadn't weaned. But she was ok weaning at 28 months - not terribly sad about it. I too had intended to let her self wean, but it was starting to be uncomfortable, and I was just done.

Was completely there with you last month. DS2 was a boob monster - 19 months. I had him down to 2 sessions (morning and night). I finally just planned a girls vacation trip away for 4 days and that effectively weaned him. When i came back, he pulled on my shirt but I told him mommy had "no more." He seemed to understand and still pulled on my shirt for 1-2 days afterward, but after that, it seemed like he got it. I was just like you!!! I wanted to wear regular bras and regular clothes again...not just the ones that were easy to pull up or down. Don't worry, it will happen. I though it wouldn't for us but i think you are nearing the age where they start to understand simple things, like "no more". ;)

Not surprisingly, I'm in the same situation. I feel the same way about nursing but I don't know that I have it in me to say no! I'm encouraged that she's shown signs of weaning at times but she seems to always come back with a vengeance. I think at some point I'll feel "done" enough that maybe I'll book a long weekend away with dh and see if that starts her off. She doesn't usually miss it when I'm not around. Anyway, no advice but definitely following for tips :)

C was a total boob monster at 16 months and she just self weaned at 20. I thought she would never wean herself at 16 months! She gradually dropped sessions herself and I did encourage it- like, one day after her nap she didn't ask for milk, and I didn't offer, then gave snack a little bit early. Then when she dropped the morning feed, she just one day woke up and wanted to play and didn't ask for milk, so again, I just made are to give her breakfast a bit early. Once she would drop a session for more than two days I didn't really go back.

Most recently I noticed she wasn't as into her last remaining nursing session, before bed. If have to ask her a few times if she wanted milk. So one day (when *I* was ready), I didn't ask and she didn't ask for it. She went a full week without asking, and has now sort of asked a couple of times but I just say the milk is all gone and distract her. I won't lie- the first time she asked and I had to say no, I cried after she was asleep, even though she was fine.

I'm so happy with how it ended. So, there's hope!

I actively weaned at 19 months, but took a slow month plus approach. She still likes to touch my breasts though, and occasionally asks.

When did he or she start to lose interest? Or did you decide to actively wean rather than waiting for LO to do it? My DD (16 mo) is VERY attached to the nursing sessions we still have and I can't bring myself to force weaning, but I also kinda feel like I'm looking for the light at the end of the tunnel...I mean, I don't actually dislike BFing but it would be nice to wear dresses and normal bras again, haha. Just looking for other mamas who've BTDT to chime in on your experiences!
