@lawt09: Thanks!! Maybe I just won't worry about it too much - Hubs' Mom is also a cleaning guru, so I bet I could get her to save it. Plus our mattress isn't new or anything, so it would be a good excuse to replace it, haha.

@ADIRA, luckily yes. My mom is a cleaning guru and went to our house immediately after delivery to get everything fixed up.

@shopaholic: To be honest, it does sound more comfortable that a vinyl shower curtain liner-- especially since i'm due at the end of July! But still... it seems so insulting! Then again, they have them in the doctor's office at the end of the exam table usually, so it's all the same. So long as I don't ruin our nice new mattress.

I made the mistake of talking to DH about all this last night. He really didn't want to hear it!

We had just gotten to the bathroom and I was going into the bathroom to change into my gown because I also had to pee. I apparently did not have to pee because when I went to try, all of the fluids started gushing out. DH was glad we made it to the hospital and that it didn't break in the car, or that at least it waited to actually gush out until we were in the hospital room. I had been in labor for about 10 hours and had her 3 hours later.

In the middle of the night. I got up to the bathroom and got back in bed. After a couple minutes I felt a "pop" and felt wetness. I got out of bed and ran to the bathroom where it came out in a big gush. We were prepared because I had been sleeping on one of those little kid night time accident pads (lol) and a towel. But the thing that got the most wet was the tile bathroom floor lol. DD was born 12 hours after that.

@Foodnerd81: *buries head *. That's what I've got going on under our mattress pad. Figured it makes less noise than a trash bag or shower curtain liner (as suggested by our childbirth teacher).

8:30 am as I was putting on workout pants to go for a walk with my neighbor. Luckily we have hardwood floors and i wasn't standing on our new rug! I had just used the restroom so I knew it wasn't that! It was a pop of fluid but I didn't hear anything. I changed and then more came out when I went to tie my shoes. I changed again and put on slip on shoes instead.

7:20pm as I got ready for our last pre-baby date night. I was sitting on the couch putting on makeup. I felt something akin to how it feels when when my period starts. I got up to run to the bathroom and had a movie-like gush. It didn't stop until I delivered at 10:10am. I can attest to it coming out of our (dark) rug, bathmats and towels, and a pad plus beach towel worked for the car.

2am in the washroom.

I was feeling tummy pains (I thought it had been the burrito I had eaten for lunch that day) and b/c I had my 37wk apt that morning (in which my OB said I probably wasn't going to deliver) I didn't know it was my water that had broken until my pants were soaked.

I was 39 weeks, 1 day finishing up a work assignment at home on a Saturday- I was typing the e-mail to go with it to my boss saying I was done working and was going to start my leave that weekend, that my driving days were done. I had originally planned maternity leave to start 2 weeks before (37 weeks), but was bored at home waiting and work needed the help, so I kept on working. Since my water broke, I edited the e-mail to say I definitely wouldn't be in since labor started, and my boss was the second person to find out after my husband of course.

I was sitting on the couch with my computer on the coffee table, dropped my pen and when I bent over to pick it up I felt a huge pop, like a rubberband snap, just not painful. Absolutely no doubt what it was!

I immediately stood up and ran to the bathroom. I husband thought I was running in to throw up, which was typical for me during pregnancy. We hung out for a couple of hours at home finishing watching a basketball game, then made our way to the hospital, contractions didn't start till I got in the car. I soaked through the large overnight pads every time I stood up. I sat on a towel in the car, and soaked through several pairs of pants.

Less than 8 hours after my water broke, our little guy arrived.

@Adira: the mattress protector we have is padded on top (like a mattress pad) and just has waterproof lining. It's not uncomfortable or hot at all! I got it at Bed Bath & Beyond. We left it on the bed because post partum, there's all sorts of stuff going on that I wouldn't want to get to our mattress (blood, breastmilk, baby pee, night sweats, etc).

In bed at around 2:30 am. There was barely any water, so in the beginning I thought that maybe it was pee ;o It was just a few days before my due date and I had lost my mucous plug earlier that day. I showered, DH called the hospital (I had no contractions, but there was a greenish tint) and they told us to come in, but no need to hurry. So I sat around writing an email requesting a substitute for later that day and GUSH! Like in the movies! I showered again and it kept coming! That's when I realized I'll continue leaking, so we were off. My contractions came during the ride to the hospital, around 7 mins apart.

@Adira: if the plastic under the sheets is too uncomfortable, maybe you can just layer a few towels under your sheets as padding? it sounds like from everyone's experiences that that should do the job! :)

they broke my water right before i started pushing, after i got the epidural. i didn't feel it at all! DH said it was a pretty big gush of water, and that the nurses were crazy fast in cleaning it up off the floor.

Mine broke after about 40 hours of contractions (started mild and got more intense). I'd just been admitted to the hospital and was getting set up in the room. It broke when I was in the hospital bed. Huge gush, I've never felt anything like it!

With my first it broke during transition. I was in a tub so I didn't even notice. With my second it broke as the first sign of labour. It woke me up, but just got my panties wet. I wore a pad to the hospital, no big mess.

I had a mattress protector (just a cotton one) on under the sheet, and I ran to get a towel to lie on as well just in case. Our mattress is fine :)

@Adira: No I didn't, but it could've been because I gave birth in winter! If you think you'll be uncomfortable, I think wearing a thick Kotex pad will work too.

Most women don't experience a huge gush with their water breaking like in the movies... most of the time its just a small trickle so it would be highly unlikely that your mattress will get ruined anyway - I think a pad will catch everything just fine!

@Mrs. High Heels: Did you find it HOT sleeping on those vinyl sheets? I had a waterproof mattress protector on our bed, but I noticed I was waking up every night drenched in sweat and I was even getting a rash from it, so I took it off our bed. I'm nervous about putting it back on because of how uncomfortable I was before! But maybe it's worth it for the next couple weeks just to protect the mattress...?

As we were walking into the hospital to head to L&D! There was a tiny "snap" feeling inside of me, and then a gush of liquid came out that was warmer than pee. It wasn't a huge gush, I had a pad on and that contained it.

However, things got a bit dramatic when I changed into my gown and the fluid was green with meconium.

With#1: at home. I woke up to a loud pop, ran to the bathroom and felt the gush on the toilet. No mess!

With#2: it was a trickle. Went to my dr. Appt where they checked but said it wasn't amniotic fluid and sent me home. Had small gushes all day into the next day with weird contractions. Went back to the dr. And they checked me there where I gushed out all over the examination table and the floor.
