And what a dumb comment. Yeah, if you don't go tomorrow it WILL be an emergency.

I'd still say sick. We get 3 sick and 2 personal days per year and the personal ones don't roll over after a year so our HR person tends to say use the personal first though.

@Anagram: if I were requesting ahead of time (not like I woke up sick), we had a planned sick absence category for doc visits etc. Although we had sick vs personal days, they let us use them all the same.

@Anagram: Definitely possible. I don't remember anything about schools being exempt in the SF law (I know small businesses were definitely exempt), and that law was the one being used as a model for other localities and states at least at first, but the specifics could for sure be different in different places.

Contractually, our sick days are for anything medical or health related. So doctors appointments count. I'd be using a sick day in your case for sure.

But then again, our contract is pretty clear on this so it's an easy choice for me.

@nana87: If it's anything like Mat leave, it appears that school districts are kind of allowed to do their own thing. In NJ, most workers are eligible for (unpaid) long family leave time for baby bonding, but school districts are somehow exempt. Most school districts still do it, but they don't have to.

@Anagram: ugh that is maddening! You're in NJ, right? I was curious after I posted about where the ordinances have been passed lately, and it looks like lots of individual cities in NJ are passing laws, so maybe it's just a matter of time? http://www.paidsickdays.org/campaigns/#.WBd1I5MrI0q

@808love: ours is all online now, so I can actually just post my assignments there and the students will complete it on their own.

I'm just being weird--I guess because I was burned all those years ago. And because I've conditioned myself to not take time off unless it's an unavoidable emergency, since I've had a few years of mat leave, in which all my sick leave is used up.

@nana87: We have a ton of different categories. I actually have a "family sick leave" category, but that can only be used for specific family illness, usually that require a hospital stay or something. So if my child has RSV and was in the hospital, I could use it.

But RSV and home, we're not supposed to. It's maddening. Every school I've worked in is different, though.

Sick day for sure.

Also, that's surprising that you can't use your sick leave for sick kids. I used to work in policy research and did some work on mandatory paid sick leave ordinances, and the advocacy campaigns around it definitely are meant to be used for caregiving purposes, ie to take time off for sick kids or elderly relatives. The first locality to require employers to provide a minimum of 7 days was San Francisco, which is the one I know the most about because it's the one we studied, but now it's spread to a bunch of difference places, and is spreading more and more. The proposed national legislation, the Healthy Families Act, def includes the explicit use of sick leave for caregiving

@Anagram: Taking a sick day is totally valid. At our school they do not like us to show up the day we are sick to hand in sub plans because you are not supposed to be on the premises. We are supposed to email it to a colleague. I have sent it via my husband and occasionally I just walk it in (not to the office but to my desk) super early. They also said something about kids and parents seeing you when you are supposed to be sick. I think they only told us that when we started the school and no one has said anything about it since.

Sick day all the way. Plus it's really illegal for anyone to be prying into your personal medical history to be finding out if it is a planned medical appointment, an emergency medical appointment, etc. If someone doubts they veracity of your story, they can require a note but beyond that it is inappropriate to ask follow up questions, in my opinion.

And follow up question--for future reference. If it's a planned medical procedure, but out of medical necessity.....sick day or "personal" day?

added info: I get 10 sick days a year, but only 3 personal. Child sicknesses are supposed to come from personal days. Sick days are only for the employer. And I have 2 kids.

Sick day. And yea what your principal did was illegal and not cool. Sick is sick. Whether it happens in the middle of the night suddenly or it's something long term. I highly doubt you'd tell a person with a chronic disease that they aren't really sick!

I think I am weird about this stuff because years ago in my 2nd year teacher (different state, different school), I got sick my second to last week of school. But not suddenly ill--I had an ongoing problem that suddenly just took a turn for the worse. Sort of like now. I hadn't taken *any* days off the entire years, so I still had all my sick days left. Same situation as now, I made my appointment for the next morning.

I thought I was being responsible to make my plans for the sub and give them to the front office before leaving--but then the principal reamed me out and said sick days are for emergency sicknesses only--like you wake up throwing up in the middle of the night. And anything else had to be a personal day--which required 5 days advance notice. I said I didn't have 5 days advance notice and then she said I should just go to the ER at night then, instead of taking time off work.

Later she got in trouble for that, because it's illegal apparently (she didn't just do that to me, she said that to several people in similar situations).

But still, it always makes me second guess myself now.

I'd do a half sick day and half vacation day. But if you can only take one or the other, I'd absolutely take a sick day, with no guilt allowed - you have an actual doctor's appointment, which makes it legitimate.
