The reality is that between gifts, hand-me-downs we'd receive, and pre-baby purchases, there was only a small amount of newborn and 0-3/3-month clothing that we would actually use again "just in case" we have another boy. You never know what will happen to them and you don't want to be pissed if you find out she threw something away after a major blowout or something. If I were you I'd only hand down things you definitely wouldn't use for another baby girl, and shop for your niece separately. After all, she's not even pregnant yet!!</p> <p>When I had my babies, our only direct source of hand me downs, my older brother, didn't give us any hand me downs because they weren't sure if they were done having babies yet (they're still not sure, and their kids are now 6 and 3). The only hand me downs I got from them were a couple of things here and there that they didn't like. While it kind of irked me (receiving only a few things and it being kind of obvious it was stuff they didn't like) I totally understood that they wanted to keep their stuff for a possible future LO.</p> <p>Also, beware stashing away clothes-- drool stains don't appear until about 6 months later! I put away all of Wagon jr.'s newborn stuff so nicely, freshly washed and all folded and stacked neatly.. and when I opened the crates 6 months later to stash more outgrown clothes I wanted to save for LO #2, the drool stains were big and yellow and ugly!!! Even if they say they'll give it back, they just don't always have control over what happens to the clothes because babies ruin them easily. I didn't want to take the chance of my favorite outfits getting ruined, and not getting enough back so I'd have to buy more when I already had so much. I went through LO's clothes and gave her some that we have to spare that I don't love. Once my daughter turned into a toddler it was much harder to keep the "wear" on the clothing down. Mean, a lot of it got stains, or pilling, or whatever just because she's so much more active.
