Yes! For me it was kind of a pain b/c of my profession -- I'm a Ph.D. scientist, and I already had a whole bunch of publications under my maiden name. Still, I always wanted to change my last name to my husband's name, so I went for it. I'm very happy with my decision and have not looked back.

Didn't change my name.
@beka: Funny, I did the opposite - kept my own last name and use his name socially. I had planned to add his name as a second last name, hyphenated maybe? But it would involve a lot of paperwork having to do with my professional licensing, on top of all the other legal stuff. And everyone already calls me by his last name anyway (which I like), so I didn't really see the point. Our kids will all have his last name.

Yes, now my old name sounds strange to me. I ended up just changing my maiden name to another middle name since I didn't want to let it go completely.

@j0s1e267: @beka

Too funny. I guess I will change mine too because as you point out it does bother me that husband's sister or sister in law would have that right and I wouldn't!!! Ugh!

People call my husband by my last name all the time, haha.

@KML636, @J0S1E267, @MRS. YOYO - my friend needed to prove that she was her child's mother when she was at a hospital out-of-country (Canada, and she is American) trying to receive care for her child.

Truthfully, it annoys me that I felt like changing my name legally would allow me to make important decisions for my spouse and future children in emergencies... when my dad, or my husband's sister could theoretically do the same (because they share our respective last names). I know my friend now carries her marriage certificate and her child's birth certificate in her puse, but since those have social security card #s on them, I decided I would rather change my name legally and keep my name professionally/socially than carry those with me. I imagine this is one of those decisions that rests on each of our personal comfort levels.

I've never heard of changing your name on your birth certificate for marriage to be honest.
I changed it on my ss card, drivers license, all tax and work documents and credit cards.
So, it is legally changed.

I'm with looch - moved my maiden name as my middle since I never had a middle name, and took on my hubby's last name. I got super attached to my maiden name shortly before we got married. No idea why. Now, I would totally be okay with just a first and last again.

Yes I have it changed on just about everything. We both had long last names (Hubbys is 11 letters, my maiden name was 7) so I didn't want to deal with hyphenated or any of that but wanted our children to have the same last name as both of us. Every once in awhile something will pop up with my maiden name, but the big stuff is done.

I kept my name after getting married. A few months ago, I added my husband's name (2 last names, no hyphen) legally after hearing a friend's experience trying to prove she was her child's mother.

I'm still Beka Mylastname on everything though... business cards, email address, facebook, etc. Plan to always be. Our kids will be like @mamacate and @mrs. jacks - First Name Middle Name Mylastname Husbandlastname

For our LO, we did the same as Mrs. Jacks, with my last name as a second middle name. So its
firstname middle name mylast hislast

On some things i know that the second middle will be dropped but it was important to me to have it be part of her legal name.

The only thing that has DHs name on it is facebook, where my name is hyphenated. Everything is still in my maiden name. Eventually, I'm going to hyphenate but with all the regular paperwork compounded with the military paperwork... it's just too much to deal with right now. (I have all my regular stuff plus military insurance, ID cards, command sponsorship, 2 passports, my UK entry visa, etc. Ick.)
