My husband is picky with healthy foods... I turn everything into a smoothie for him. He'd rather have a smoothie with spinach than a salad. As long as it gets into him somehow, I'm happy!

Girl! You are sounding like me especially when I'm pregnant. I am so picky that I will not eat and then sneak something later if I am not into what's being served and lately I have the same issues you mentioned. I have eaten healthy in the past but I find it hard to do when I have to do the cooking. If I could eat out all the time I would be much more likely to eat better. What is helping me a little bit is to find easy pre cut things. I buy those mini peeled carrots and did them in peanut butter or hummus or ranch. I buy chopped fruit sometimes though it does get expensive. But the real key for me was getting a nutri ninja blender and drinking things in smoothie or juice form. With a little milk or yogurt and a banana almost anything is good. Throw in spinach, carrots flax seed frozen berries and other good things. I drink one a day and feel like I'm at least getting some pure nutrients. Without that my diet would be so limited. Another thing that I want to try is making healthy muffins I can freeze and reheat because I love baked goods.

I don't eat fruits, veggies, or meat, so.... I hear you.

I have had some success with food-chaining. For example, I like tomato sauce and I like pizza, and so a couple of years ago I pushed myself to chunkier tomato sauce and pizza with chopped tomato. I also like oatmeal raisin cookies, and I recently discovered I can do dried cherries, so now I make oatmeal raisin cherry cookies. More about food-chaining here: http://mealtimehostage.com/tag/food-chaining/

I can tolerate raisins, and fruit juices, but not fruit. So I like the taste, not the texture. I went to whole foods and bought a little of each kind of dried fruit, and made myself taste them all! I discovered I can tolerate dried papaya and dried cherries, and I tried to keep little bags on hand at work and take them on hikes. I get tired easily of these foods though and I often would rather go hungry rather than eat them.

You said: "I'm much more likely to eat fruit, say, if it's already cut up and ready to go.....I have a texture thing as well." Being reflective about things like that will help you create routines that push you into eating more. If you want to create new habits, you must make it appealing and easy for you to do so, by little tweaks like buying pre-cut fruit, keeping a bowl of apples out in a central area, etc.

For what it's worth, I've had 4-5 doctors throughout my life, and NONE have been concerned. I take a multivitamin with breakfast and lunch. I get blood panels done every 2-3 years, and everything so far has come back good.

I've really had to change my mindset, and for me I can't keep junk in the house, or I automatically go to it. Chips Ahoy cookies...gone in 3 days while the strawberries go bad in the fridge. I love strawberries, but cookies are easier to grab/sound better.

So when I'm on maternity leave there will be no chips/cookies/ect. I will keep fruit, veggie tray (seriously if you have a Sam's club membership you can get a huge veggie tray for like 10 bucks that lasts all week.) and that will be my snacks. I really have to force myself to make the better choice. I'm a SUGAR FREAK and it's not just one cookie in a setting, it is 4...I have no self control.

My husband is the same regarding fruit, he'll eat a bowl of fruit salad, but he won't just pick up a banana and eat that as a snack, for example.

One thing that works for us to eat more raw vegetables is for me to pick several and then cut them up and put them in trays for us to take to work. I do grape tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots and cucumbers. I wash, clean, cut on Sunday afternoon, takes me about 20 minutes to prepare 6 servings worth that we take to the office. I would do the same if I stayed home, because i don't take the time.

@sorrycharlie: It's not sad at all! We really fell out of our good habits over the years and now I find that I need to buy precut fruit even though it's not the best deal. Because hey, if it's as easy to grab as chips, I'll eat it. And then you won't have to think about your one fruit a day.

@sorrycharlie: I think it's really good advice to start with one thing. Set mini goals for yourself. Big sweeping changes rarely take hold. But smaller changes are more likely to stick.

@spaniellove: good idea! I am incredibly lazy about fruits and veggies. so maybe I can try to force myself to eat one fruit a day to start.. (how sad is that?!)

I'm much more likely to eat fruit, say, if it's already cut up and ready to go. If I have to spend time washing and cutting up first, I'll opt for something else, lol. Not to say I don't buy whole fruit for LO but I'm talking quick snacks for myself.

I have a texture thing as far as, don't like skins, a lot of meat (I'll eat chicken..sometimes, and ground beef, and occasional burger).

What's your definition of picky? Do you just not like certain foods? Or do they literally revolt you? I eat lots of things that are healthy that are "not my favorite" that i sort of tolerate....I don't look at every meal like OMG MUST LOVE IT. Sure, i would prefer pizza every night! But sometimes i just eat grilled chicken, roasted broccoli, some brown rice, and call it a day.

Healthy has lots of meanings, so....what does it mean to you? For me, choosing healthy options boils down to a lot of convenience. I'll eat them if i have them because they are right there in front of me. And i don't keep unhealthy options around. Can't really eat chips if they aren't staring me in the face....

Depends on what you're picky about, but maybe instead of focusing on "healthy" maybe focus on one aspect like made from scratch or more protein or just more fresh food or things with more color? I have texture issues and figure since my food is generally made from scratch I can't be doing too badly.

I am incredibly picky. Embarrassingly so. As a result I really don't have the most rounded diet (ok, it's square).

How do I ease into eating healthier? I'm not looking for anything drastic, and I won't cut out sugar or anything like that. Lol. But I really am just NOT good at choosing healthy options, even when I like them!
