@travelingbrit: I used to work for Disney and they have a VERY specific attendance policy-- we got 1.5 points for being late (from 1 minute to up to half of your shift) and 3 points for calling out sick. You could only have a certain amount of points for one month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. When you went over points, you would get disciplinary actions (a verbal warning, written warning, 1-day suspension, 3-day suspension, and last and final, then termination). Points "fell off" after one year, and so would your disciplinary actions.

It sounds really strict, but if you worked full time, you would call out for 3 days in a row, once a month, and not have any disciplinary action (depending on how you played it).

At my last job, we had paid time off (not vacation) so I used that that when I went to the doctor. My current job doesn't have that, it's just vacation. So I make it up that week or the next week. Sometimes I work 35 hours a week. Sometimes it's closer to 50. I think in the end, it's averages about 40-45 hours a week.

We have sick days we can use for doc appt. My boss just gives them to me. That includes doc appt. if I need to leave early for daycare issues. etc. I have a pretty great, flexible boss.

I work a 4/40 schedule with fridays off, so I usually makes appointments for fridays. If I need an appointment on another day it depends on how long I will miss work. If my appointment is at the end of the day and I will only miss an hour, then I don't really need to make anything up. If I miss half a day or so, then I can use my vacation hours or "personal sick" hours. I could also ask to make up the time on friday, but I don't usually want to do that. Basically, if it is only 1-2 hours then I don't have to make it up, but if it is much longer then I do.

I had a salaried position before I became a SAHM. I never made up time for taking off for personal business. I didn't feel I needed to because I normally worked long hours and would have to stay late or come in early to finish projects.

I normally work 8-5 so as long as I'm in the office before ten or am leaving after 3:30 in the afternoon then I don't worry about making up the time off. If I'm out for any longer then I use some of my sick leave (I'm in NZ and we get five days per year which accumulates so I have about 20 days of sick leave available).

I have however always made it clear to my boss that I'm happy to take sick leave fror the time off but he's not too worried because apart from midwife appointments, my attendance is really good :-)

Nope. We get "Five" sick days, but even those days never get used because I usually log on from home after my dr appts and my boss doesn't count them as official sick days.

I checked the other box. I work so many hours already that I don't feel guilty about taking some time to go to my appts. As long as the work gets done, I'm fine. I dream of a job someday where I can leave at 5 and not put in hours at home. It's going to be quite the transition once the baby comes for me and my boss.

No, I don't make up time. If I have to finish a project by a deadline I might stay late, but I'm not really "making up time". Like a previous poster mentioned, I don't think it's legal if you're salaried, but a lot of companies try to do it anyway.

It sounds like more people tend not to worry about it too much and just let it even itself out.
I think I'm just in a different mindset because of my previous job.

At my former company where I worked as an analyst we were required to clock in and out. If we were more than 3 minutes late we got a letter in our file, and any doctors appointments had to be preapproved and either unpaid or use PTO.

I received several letters in my file for being "late" when in reality I was maybe 5-10 minutes late because of accidents. I even got in trouble for stopping and assisting a roll over accident on the freeway.

Needless to say I found another job, and the company is amazing. Even though I have no true "hours", I feel guilty if I get in after 8 or if I leave early. Plenty of people arrive at 9, 10 even 11 - So I know it's just my own craziness.

No, i don't make up the hours because it all eventually evens out. If there is a deadline and I need to work late they don't pay me more so its really a matter of you meeting your deadlines for projects.

I'm salaried, but work for an agency, so we have to submit weekly timesheets accounting for at least 40 hours each week. I normally will work through lunch another day that week when I have a doctor's appointment. Otherwise, I have to log the time to sick leave.

I'm salary and techincally I don't think legally we are required to make up that time, however company policy says we are supposed too. I usually skip lunch and come in early on days of appointments and come close to making it up, however I don't count minutes, just general. My direct boss is pretty laid back and doesn't even notice, I just shoot him an email saying I'm leaving early and will make up my time and he's cool with that and never asks questions on when/how.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I ended up being gone for over 3 hours today. If you count my lunch hour, it was 2, since I ate my desk while working/hellobeeing when I got back. I am not really busy right now, so I might stay an hour later tonight at the most. If I am really busy at work, then yes, but mostly cause I have stuff to do.

I think that it all evens out in the end.

I was only salaried once for a year at my previous job and when I'd leave for anything, No I would not make it up. My boss had a "I don't care what you do as long as your work is done by the deadline" type of mentality. So, sometimes when my work wasn't done i'd come in early or stay late...and when my work was done i'd leave early or extend my lunch break a few mins longer. It was the way everyone in our department did it.

It depends on how much time I'm missing. If it's up to an hour, I might try to make up some of it, but usually I just let it go. I always email my supervisor first and run it by him. Most of the time he tells me not to worry about it, unless it's a few hours, then I have to submit a request for time off.

ETA: We clock in and out, but even if we're here for 7 1/2 or 8 /12 hours, we are paid for 8 hours. I think the hospital just assumes that it evens out over time and they're not too strict with us about it.

I work in a typical office setting, about 250 employees. We can take off early/leave late, etc for doctor's appointments, things for children, etc and not make up the time, because we're also expected to stay late if we need to. I think that the company assumes it all balances out in the end, and if it's not becoming a problem with getting your work done, then they don't care.

I'm not technically salaried, but I submit a timesheet every single week for 40 hours, even if he let's us leave early or whatever. So, since I'm technically an hourly employee, (even though I don't clock in or clock out) I try to make up the time I am gone, or submit a timesheet with only 38 or 39 hours on it for the work week. Even when I submit one with fewer hours, he usually just pays me for the full 40 anyway. So, that's how it works for me.

I didn't have to make up any time for my dr appt however my employer was very understanding throughout my pregnancy. I think part of it is because since I have a company phone and remote access to my work computer I'm pretty much always accessible.

What I did was I asked my boss if it was ok if I worked through my lunch so I could leave an hour early for my dr appt. that was when he told me not to worry about it and that all the time I was out for Dr appts was off the record. goodluck!

I technically am salaried, but along with our vacation and sick time, we're given what's called "excused time." This is what I use for doctor's appointments and other things that cause me to miss work, so I don't have to make up the time.

My situation is probably different though, because I do have to enter my labor during the day, even though I'm salaried, because we have different "charges" that we could be working on and they want to make sure the money is coming out of the right charge for each task. So I enter the "excused" charge for the time that I'm out, and then my normal charge for the rest of the time.

Hope that makes sense!

I used to like you due to guilt, but none of my co-workers do. Plus, over time, I observed that they come in late/leave early AND take long lunches so heck with it! As long as you get your work done per deadline, I think you're good.

Also, I'm sure there will be time in the future in which you will have to stay late for projects so that time can be made up then.

This is my first salaried job, and I've never discussed with my boss if he wants me to make up the time I miss for doctors appointments.
So far I have been making up the time because I feel guilty, by skipping lunches or staying late - but I'm just so exhausted this week.
Do you make up the time if you are gone for appointments?
