I never understand why people care so much whether someone else finds out the sex of their baby, weird. I was not TG because I wanted to know and I got so many stupid comments from people about how I should have been TG because there are so few surprises in life etc. Um, I was pretty surprised when I found out haha. Can't win with people.

Yes to the planner line! We were TG with our first, and friends and family just could. not. stand. it. My husband and I loved being TG and were planning to do so again this time around but there was a while we thought we were going to lose the baby, so we found out. It feels so weird to know, to say "he" instead of "it".

@lovehoneybee: When I told one of my coworkers I was pregnant, she asked me what am I pregnant with. I responded, "a Yorkshire Terrier," with a straight face. I was 8 weeks, so it wasn't like she was asking about the sex!

So far, it's been the planner line. Yes, because I totally can't plan my baby's nursery or buy any clothes! My buddies are surprised the nursery is already planned, and it's not grey or yellow :p

I got the comments about not being able to bond with the baby unless you know the sex - i just thought that was so strange! This thing is literally kicking the inside of me, how can it not feel real and like something I could bond with!? Regardless of the bits between it's legs?
FWIW I LOVED being team green. Finding out I had a son after L & D was a huge rush!!

@jedeve: Actually, the "it" thing was the thing I liked least about being TG. *I* didn't want to call the baby 'it' but it is tiring to always say he or she. I was so sure it was a boy that I started calling it 'he' after a while... I have a girl. Whoops.

Oh I thought of another. "Don't call the baby it!"

Really? Try saying "he or she" or "the baby" all the time. "Well when the baby comes we will out the baby in the baby's crib in the baby's room..."

Fwiw, we were TG with number 1 and found out with number 2. I had more fun not knowing. I think because we had another boy everyone was a little meh in their reaction. If we have a third I don't want to know!

Everyone has been really excited that I'm TG. I'm fairly early so there is more room for comment, but so far it's been really positive. I may luck out all the way around on pregnancy comments. The only comment that made me look sideways was a coworker who said she couldn't imagine caring for another human being. My thought, then it's a good thing you aren't.

Someone likened me not finding out to me not doing genetic testing. Umm..no. I would always want to know anything that threatens my child's well-being.

Also if I had known, I would not have had a pink or blue nursery or whatever it is that I was "supposed" to do. Finally, I have no qualms being the odd person out. If you tell me I shouldn't do something or what I'm doing is not "right", then it makes me want to do something even more.

@jedeve: yes! I always want to say that about the healthy comments. I know people mean no harm, and it's just the preprogrammed thing to fill the silence, but still... for all they know we might already have some diagnosis!

Most comments I got about team green were positive, but I got tired of people using it as an excuse to analyze and comment on my body. "Must be a ____ because you're carrying like ____ " Eye roll.

I've actually found I've had to justify finding out quite a bit! I usually say my husband doesn't like surprises (which is true, he really wanted to know) but to be truthful Ido feel very bonded now I know his name and I'm really glad we found out, it also gave me something to look forward to at my 20 week scan which I was very very nervous about. The planning thing I do think comes from people who love gender specific things, our nursery and gear are all neutral anyway but I've had people say 'oh it's good you know, now you can paint th nursery blue' ... Yeah I don't feel the need to have everything in my life baby blue thanks!

@Iced Tea: I see what you are saying and can see why that comment would be annoying. Never really thought of it that way. I think when people say, "I'm too much of a planner" it generally means "I dislike uncertainty/not knowing...I like having specific plans." My husband is someone who likes to have a fairly specific itinerary when traveling; he gets super anxious when I start bringing up other options/contingencies... so I think that is a big part of why he wanted to find out baby's gender. He likes to feel like he has control and knows what to expect. He is not someone who likes surprises. I do, and could see myself going team green with a different partner, but in our relationship, it's definitely best for us to find out. Anyway, I've learned something. Thanks! :)

Re: "I'm too much of a planner."

If anything, being TG requires a bit more planning, not less since you have to do a bit of contingency planning.

If contingency planning makes one nervous, I think that makes one a less dedicated planner rather than more. That's what makes the phrase annoying, in my opinion.

With baby #1 I wanted to be team green but gave in to peer pressure and found out the gender. We walked out of the ultrasound room and I regretted finding out before we had even made it to the waiting room. So far I haven't gotten any irritating comments but we haven't announced to anyone outside of close family and close friends. But I cant see 1 single thing that I need to plan for if #2 is a boy or a girl. This baby will be in our room for the first 6 monthd or so (like DS was) so no need to worry about a nursery), DS is a boy so we already know what we want to do for circ, and we will go in to the hospital with a boy name and a girl name. Easy peasy.

@jetsa: I agree that it's totally a matter of preference. Just to be clear though, I've never said that planning line to anyone who was team green with any thought that the parents would somehow be less prepared or that the child will be missing anything whatsoever. My sister was team green for both her pregnancies...I thought it was great fun not knowing, and I thought she was 100% prepared...it's just not something I could do. I am too impatient and there were gender specific things I wanted to plan for. I think you are possibly reading too much into those comments/taking them the wrong way, but I can see how you could interpret it that way and will avoid saying stuff about planning from now on. That's actually the reason I opened this thread...I wanted to make sure I wasn't saying anything annoying.

@CakeLady: yea that's another our nursery for number 1 is gold, white and chocolate brown and everyone always said that oh it's definitely a boy with those colors huh?!? For number 2 I want navy white and silver, I guess those are boy colors too?!?

@78h2o: @Radish: and that is fine to each their own but my point was more that these people act as if the future child will be missing xyz because it couldn't be planned for and that is absolutely not the case, it's about preferences.

A total stranger sitting next to me on the train - having no idea whether I was team green or not (I was) - said to me out of nowhere "Are you hoping for a boy?"

I found it pretty annoying when people would say "So the nursery will be green or yellow?" As if those are the only acceptable options for a gender neutral nursery.

@jetsa: I've dedinitely said, "I could never do that, I'm too much of a planner." I'll try to remember not to say it anymore, but I do sort of feel like there are things you can plan for when you know the sex that you can't plan for otherwise. That's not to say you can't prepare/plan when you are team green, but I do feel like it's a little different. We didn't want a gender neutral nursery, so waiting to find out would have meant waiting to plan/paint the nursey. We could have planned one for each gender, but we had enough trouble making decisions about one plan. Also, whether or not to circumcize was not something my husband and I agreed upon, and I didn't really want to have to figure that one out if it wasn't necessary. Same thing with picking a name. That being said, I can see your point too.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: I've gotten all the comments. I guess since this is my 2nd time being team green? Or I got one just barely that said "find out, that way it becomes a real person".

Or, "find out because I need to know", "find out or I won't be able to get you a present".

I don't mean to be rude but it does start getting kind of funny when people make it known how frustrating it is to THEM that they don't know the gender or YOUR baby.

@Espion: Before D and I got married we were visiting one of the groomsmen and his wife, A. A was around 7 months pregnant at the time, and I asked her what she was having (it was the first time I had ever met her and didn't know she was TG at the time...).

Her very deadpanned response "A puppy."

@Espion: oh yeah, forgot the "do you know what it is?" Questions. Yup I know it's a baby. I was a sport and answered "we aren't finding out the sex" anyway. :)

We found out because we wanted to know and really enjoyed it. I thought we got the most annoying comments being shamed for finding out! People feel so strongly about this subject. I see the excitement in both ways! And we got gender neutral stuff anyway, it just seemed sensible.

Most everyone was really excited and supportive of us not finding out, but it drove my stepmother crazy. I can't remember the exact wording, but more than once she complained that we were doing it just to make *her* life harder. She even once suggested that she could call my doctor and ask her to tell her or "let it slip" to us! (a pipe dream, for sure, but it earned a full-body eye roll...)
