I think you can't go wrong with either. We stayed in a smallish boutique hotel in Savannah recently (so historic and smallish), and I'm certain it would have been just as lovely with my husband as it was with my friends. I think being able to walk to restaurants would be the best bet if it's just overnight, too.

And I'm excited for you guys to get away!

I like hotels with character and good food, so A would be my definite choice.

@snowjewelz: lol it's actually looks like a really nice boutique hotel. There's been tons of really great reviews. I'm not worried about the quality of the room and service...just size. If that makes sense.

@Mrs. High Heels: yes, yes x1000!!! Except I want the really good food because we never get date nights and don't get to eat out often.:P

@hotchildinthecity: haha I don't foresee us doing it. But I want the option if I just want to stay in my robe the whole time...???

@regberadaisy: Honestly, on staycations I could care less about all the fine dining options - we seriously enjoy the hotel to its max. We go to the hotel gym, we lounge at the pool, we SLEEP IN and love those thick lush hotel blackout curtains that make you think it's night at 10 am, we stay up and order a hotel movie... it's AWESOME. Big chains are usually reliable in this way.

I look forward to the perfectly made bed with the crisp white sheets, the awesome shower pressure, the nice shampoos/lotions/hairdryer... the hotel robes. The only time we'd have to leave is probably just for a dinner out, and we'll grab brunch on our way checking out the next day anyway. If it's overnight, you're only really having to go out of your way for one meal.

Are there any hotels in town to get out and go for a walk? I wouldn't want to drive but I'm not sure I'd want to spend the whole weekend in the hotel either.

@Mrs. High Heels: that's what I'm afraid of!! I literally want to spend all our time minus meals in this room. I'm not sure what to expect and don't want us to be claustrophobic after 2 hours.

A!!! I'd be willing to get dressed to go eat if all the dining options are amazing! As long as the rooms aren't dingy and they are comfortable!

@deerylou: haha ditto. But this is holing away from our kids for a "romantic" day and half in our own city. :silly: All I want is sleep, relaxation, good uninterrupted meals and DH.

I'd go with the big chain! While the smallish hotel sounds quaint and cute, and I'm sure it's lovely... our biggest thing when going overnight is SLEEP and comfort. Bigger chains just feel more luxurious to us and I'd rather have that than the charming B&B feel, especially if this kind of thing is a once in a blue moon type thing!

A, one thousand times, over. I love quaint, unique inns, and personally don't really care about room service. Then again, I'm far more into strolling around, and discovering local gems than all-inclusive resort style vacationing.

For one night, I'm not sure it matters too much--doubt you would use many amenities in one night, and room service wouldn't really matter either, but would probably pick the smaller hotel because we tend to like that feel better.

I'm in the very beginning stages of planning a teeny minication for DH and I for our 5 year wedding anniversary coming up. Because it's in August and smack in the height of wedding season around here I want to book our hotel room ASAP. We'll be staying overnight at a hotel locally.

I am torn between what hotel I should book

My options are:
A) locally owned hotel that's in a renovated historic building. Within the building there are 4 amazing restaurants that go from a brewery to fine dining. All highly reviewed and locally owned and a local coffee / bake shop.
But because it's a locally owned hotel the amenities are not as vast as a national chain. No room service and I'm sure the rooms are a bit smaller.
But the beauty of this choice is we can literally stay our entire 30-40 some odd hours in this building and never leave if we wanted to. DH won't have to drive at all, which I'm sure will be amazing for him.

Or b) a vast selection of national chains which will have likely bigger rooms. More amenities and room service!!! But DH will likely have to drive us to get lunch, dinner, etc. but everything will be only 5-10 minutes away.

We are looking to just spend quality time together sans kids. Sleep!!!

If you've done a overnight trip before what would you choose for a overnight stay in your own city?

Local hotel is about the same price as all the national chains.
