we traveled 6 hours with our 8 month old. we stopped once for lunch and a diaper change.

we left right at the time of his am nap. he passed out pretty quickly and slept just over an hour. we rode for another hour a half and stopped for lunch. after an hour or so back on the road he fell asleep for his afternoon nap and again slept just over an hour. we were only an half hour away from our destination when he woke from his last nap. it worked perfectly and thankfully we didn't have any poop stops!

We just did a five hr trip - LO is 15 months. I made sure to bring tons of snacks, her favorite books, her favorite songs, and unfettered access to my phone :) she did well in the beginning so the first segment was about 2 hrs. After that we stopped every hr to let her walk and get some air. She did very well and didn't lose it until we were 15 mins from our destination.

Our longest was a little over 4 hours. We time it around her nap. We try to leave at nap time, two hours later when she gets up get a snack, change the diaper, get back in the car and we have two hours where I have to entertain her.

We just successfully managed a road trip when LO was 10 days old :) it was super easy. She slept the whole way. Our ped recommends car seat breaks every 90 mins so we used those to change and feed her. Trip usually takes 4.5 hrs took 6 one way and 5.5 the way home.

@regberadaisy: done this too many times. Snack on the go. I really pissed DH off once because I crawled into the backseat while we were driving down a highway to nurse her in her carseat. He flipped! lol!

For our usual 4 hour trip to visit my sister we plan for 1 stop that usually involves a meal or snack. It's easier than trying to power through anymore. When she was 6 months and under, we could go 4 hours without stopping.

We did an 8-hour trip with LO when he was 4 months. We timed it so that we'd leave late afternoon, stop once to nurse, put down the little guy for the night at around 7PM, and nurse once more when we arrived at the location at around 11PM.

@Bao: We've taken a few road trips, but all of them were around 4 hours. DD hates the car.... we were able to go right around her nap time, so that saved us. When she woke up, we did what we could to keep her occupied but we ended up stopping w/ about 30 min left so we could eat and let her run around.

We've done many 2-3 hour trips to visit family. We've had to stop once at most and usually now we can do it without stopping at all. She's 4.5 months.

We do 5-6 hours all time to go visit our families. We've already made that trip 4 times this year! :) We usually leave after lunch and the kids nap in the car for about 3 hours. We can usually stretch out driving an extra hour or so before we stop for a 15 minute break Then we do the last 1-2 hour stretch all together. When DD was younger, we'd stop twice on our drive. We'd leave at morning naptime, stop for 15 minutes when she woke up, stop again for lunch, and then get back on the road for her afternoon nap. I also wait as long as possible to get in the backseat with the kids. DS never cries for longer than 10 minutes, but I wait until I know he's really cranky because I get carsick in the backseat.

We took a trip that was 725 miles each way with LO and stopped 4 times (same there and back). Basically we stopped every three hours or so. She was younger than your LO though (3.5 months at the time). We did a big chunk of the way there early in the morning (left at 4am) so that we could get some mileage under our belts while she slept. The stops were longer than they would have been without her so that she could stretch and roll, but they weren't nearly as frequent as I thought they'd need to be. We did build in a cushion day so that if her sleep or day had been awful, we'd have time to adjust before any plans.

We've been to see DH's family twice and are heading out again this afternoon. The drive usually takes 4 hours. Last time LO was 2.5 mo and it was super easy. She slept almot the entire way. We had to stop to feed her but it was pretty quick. I liked the opportunity to get her out of the car seat. I thank my lucky stars for having such a good little road tripper. She's 4.5 mo now, so we'll see how it goes today.

Yes, quite a few times. Twice to Toronto; 1.5 hours. And twice to NYC about 6hours one way. We only stopped once each time for gas. She mainly napped/slept most of the time. The last time she was almost 12 months. We drove right at her bedtime and she actually slept the whole way. On the way back during the day she played for a bit then napped. She woke up when we stopped for gas and a early dinner. Then played for a bit in the car and slept the rest of the way again.

We brought some of her favorite toys and lots of snacks. There was one or two freak outs that were solved by puffs. :)

How often did you have to stop? How far did you travel? We are going on our first little road trip tomorrow and it's about 5 hours to our destination. LO is 9 months old and I'm hoping she takes a good nap on the way. I'm really not sure what to expect though, but hoping we don't need to stop too many times.
