@SugarplumsMom: we only did a custom island with IKEA cabinets for the base, and we ordered a piece of quartz from a different place. We needed a really large piece and I wanted a specific color.

Update:
We just finished our appointment with the builders (required in our location before being able to buy anything from Ikea). It was really helpful because they pointed out all of the things we can't do and answered all of our questions. For instance:

- We need to move the dishwasher to the other side of the sink. The pipes will affect the depth of the adjacent cabinet underneath the countertop.
- They will not drill a hole in the granite for the faucet. We would have to go to Ikea and bring them our faucet, so they (or the company they buy it from) do it themselves.
- They provided alternative cabinet combinations that appropriately matches where the countertop joints will be. Ikea has 3 or 4 standard cabinet widths, so it's possible to play around with the combinations. But the granite countertops can only be 3 meters long.
- We know exactly what walls can be taken down and what needs to stay. This includes what segments we'd want to keep to avoid charges from rewiring our electricity.

One surprise was how much time was spent on discussing our uneven flooring. We're taking down some walls and the flooring of one room is slightly higher than the rest. They provided solutions, which was helpful. But I didn't plan on having to redo the whole floor (and spending so much more).

Overall, my suspicions were right about having to go to Ikea numerous time before getting it done. The company will forward all their notes to Ikea and we'll continue working with our layout from there. It looks like I'll really need to get used to working Ikea's Home Planning software (it's suuuuper slow)!

I love the extra tall cabinets and I love the drawers on the bottom ... like totally LOVE. And I really love the stuff they have to help organize the drawers and cabinets. We got the cabinets and counters there just thought it would be easier. We went with quartz, I don't care for the look of granite. Our longest pics was 9 ft so we don't have any seams. We had a great experience. We did have a couple doors that were out of stock that we had to wait for. And IKEA does make it easy for any exchanges or damaged items( we had 1 piece that we found was damaged when we opened all the boxes).

We just had one put in. Went with a third party contractor for everything! There's a few ikea kitchen specialists who can customise everything (change cabinet sizes, add in fancy options for awkward spaces) and there are a few places that do custom doors (semi handmade etc) so they don't necessarily look ikea. The doors cost a bit more than ikea ones but less than custom kitchens. We're getting quartz through another supplier too. The customisation really helps up the look (think trim, panels, etc) under cabinet lighting is awesome, I didn't think we needed it but it's great.

@SugarplumsMom: it's at the house we're building so I'm not there right now but I'll grab a pic the next time I'm there. It's not a gap at all, it's like razor blade thin. You would never see it unless you're looking for it and even then you have to have the right lighting. When you look at different fabricators ask to see some examples. That's what I did and our fabricator did a great job

@gotkimchi: Omg, thank you! Our store didn't actually have a sample we could look at, so I was imaging an obvious grout-filled gap. If you have the time, would it be possible for you to take a picture of the seam? That would help ease my mind 😊

@oliviaoblivia: Our island will be in oak, it's the long length of counterspace that's giving me problems. It basically means there'll be seams in between my prep space 😕

we loovveee our ikea kitchen. we bought everything from them including appliances (tip: make sure your appliances are measured properly so they fit with the rest of the cabinetry etc), but not the countertop. we were going to buy their white speckle quartz, but it was backordered for a few months. in the end we went with an outside countertop contractor and was very happy with the result. he just came, measured, we picked the colour, they made it, delivered and installed and the end. also, i recommend going with an outside contractor for the countertop because at least where I am, ikea only sells thinner quartz/stone slabs, but i prefer the heftier look of a 1 5/8" thick counter.

installation went smoothly, although it does definitely take a while. not a one day project for sure. my husband who is a carpenter installed it.

something to note, sometimes certain parts/drawers/doors are not in stock and you may have to wait a few weeks or more to get them. you can't reserve these, so you have to check back periodically. it wasn't a problem for us, but i did make several trips back and forth over the next few months while we waited for a missing door or drawer. thankfully we live fairly close to two ikeas.

hope it helps! enjoy your new kitchen :)

Also their cabinets don't allow for electrical boxes so whomever is designing your island needs to account for extra cover panels to build out for electrical boxes.

Very few of my fabricators carry granite longer than nine feet. The slabs they do have in longer lengths is usually stuff I'd never specify to begin with and it's extra pricey.
When I do bigger islands (which I generally avoid because they become obstacles) I use solid surface (corian, ceasarstone, etc.).

IKEA uses local vendors for the granite counters. So you can always get another vendor to do those if you find a better option. It should be no problem, as the separate vendor will come and measure, then fabricate and install. We used IKEA for our zodiaq quartz counters, and we weren't impressed with their fabricator. We had many problems, but IKEA fixed everything. We went through Costco for the same product, different house, and had a much better experience. That said, I love the rest of my IKEA kitchen. The actual IKEA products and their installers were amazing!

We just got back from our kitchen planning appointment and it was really helpful. Although we haven't figured out all of the details, we've taken the plunge and scheduled a measuring appointment. There are a few things I didn't anticipate, the biggest is their 3 meter (9.8 ft) limit on the size of their granite countertops. This could just be specific to our Ikea location, but it really affects our options.

To those of you who have an Ikea kitchen, did you buy everything at Ikea? If you didn't, how did it all work out fitting together counters from an outside vendor?

Also, I'd love to know your general Ikea kitchen renovation tips - not countertop specific. What do you love most about your Ikea kitchen?

Looking forward to all of your comments
