Important tip -- not all dishwasher detergents are created equal, and some work better for hard water vs soft water and various mineral content. Ask your neighbors what works well for them and you'll be more likely to consistently end up with clean dishes. Well now I cook everyday, and my poor hands can't take the nonstop dish washing. I broke down and asked DH for a dishwasher to give myself a break. In their country they didnt have a dishwasher, so when the moved to the US, they just never used it. My husband tried the dishwasher once when he got his own apartment, but thought it was broken....because he put liquid dish soap in it and bubbles poured out of the dishwasher. S he never used it again. When I met him, he used the dishwasher as a drying rack after he washed his dishes. Crazy man. When we got married and I bought dishwasher soap, he asked why we can't just use the liquid dish soap---- when I told him that's for hand washing, he finally figured out why the dishwasher was "broken" in his last apartment. Then he bought his parents some dishwasher soap, too,so they can start using their own dishwasher. Growing up, we never had one and when I finally moved into a place that did have one, we used it as tupperware storage. I just handwashed everything! Finally...FINALLY...DH and I were like, screw it, we're going to be normal and start living a little. So for the first time ever, we ran our dishwasher. No dishes were in it, we just wanted to see what would happen. :D Lame, huh? Tomorrow we're going to buy dishwasher detergent and we're actually excited. LOL!
