@Mrs.B: Same story here. I was never gung ho on BLW, but I did want to give it a try. I tried at 6 mo and even 7 and 8 mo and he would just gag and it would freak me out. He hasn't mastered the pincer grasp so would never pick it up to feed himself anyway. I just gave up and did purees instead. Now he is 9 months and does much better mashing things up in his mouth before he swallows.

A similar thing happened to us! ^_^ I was not swayed by the gagging though because I read it was normal. My DH on the other hand was very worried and really wanted to go the traditional route. So we went back to the more traditional route with a few BLW thrown in once in a while. It's worked well. No need to say you are a drop out! You just have to do what's right for your family. ^_^

We started at 6 months, tried it for a month and then dropped out. Moved into purees and then chunkier purees and puffs. Now, at 10 months, he's back to BLW, eating solids like a champ!

Thats what we did! We did purees for a while and then started BLW. You're not a drop-out, you're just following your baby's cues.

I'm dropping out too! O tries to shove the entire piece of food (in this case, was a teething cookie I made from her oatmeal and baby food) in her mouth. she won't gag, she will literally choke. she does not seem to have any fear over it! i panic!

We do BLW and it's worked great for us, but E has only ever gagged once or twice before whatever he was having trouble with fell forward out of his mouth, he's never thrown up, and he loves picking up food and putting it into his mouth (because everything else goes into his mouth, lol).

It's perfect because it's what works best for E...whatever works best for A is the perfect way.

I was going to say the same thing as @mediagirl. We did purees to start with because I was too scared of her choking. We didn't even start purees until 6.5 months. But then I started giving her things that were way too big for her to actually eat, but still gave her stuff to play with and get used to new textures and tastes (ie: whole asparagus spears). I moved on to mushed up avocado, and let her smoosh it in her hands - she really liked that!

I guess what I'm saying is - it's not all or nothing. It's ok if you do a gradual or delayed approach. You know what's best for your baby :-)

We went through this, too! Purees are GREAT! We did purees and then started giving her some things to try to pick up like shredded cheese and teeny bits of toast and banana. That gave her practice with the pincer grasp. Anyway you do it is the right way. :)

This is exactly why we're skipping BLW! The thought of Sadie choking scares the crap out of me!

My entire pregnancy and up until recently I was so sure I would be doing BLW. I embraced it completely and dove in until I realized it just wasn't for us. I love the concept but A has a very strong gag reflux and was nearly choking at almost every meal. Last week she threw up 2 times because she gagged herself with food :/ that was enough to freak me out and start purees. We are on day 4 of purees now and A is doing much better with solids. We now spoon feed her and allow her to spoon feed herself. Meal times have been more enjoyable when she is not constantly gagging herself. So we are officially BLW drop outs. We will likely revisit BLW when A gets a little older but for now purees is what we will do.
