Thanks for the tips. The last few days have been hard. I'm chalking it up to a wonder week but it feels like colic. I'm so glad it should be too late for that.

Yesterday I didn't get him to nap at all until 3pm even with my boobs. It was like he knew I was planning to make changes to our routine. It took an hour walk in the carrier to get that nap. This morning was better. I actually got him to take a pacifier a little bit. Then everything when to crap in the afternoon. So much screaming. He's woken up every 20 minutes since I put him down to bed. I remember DD had a similarly rough time with week 8. It gives me hope this will be over soon.

I'll try out more of the suggestions in a few days.

My doc suggested trying to stretch the hour out. Let him fuss for 5 mins then nurse. Then increase to 10mins etc until you are at 2hrs or more. He said it is a hard few days but they quickly train to that.

Just curious, how do you do EASY without her using you as a pacifier?

No advice because I'm trying to avoid the same thing here... She takes a pacifier on occasion but there's no rhyme or reason why or when she will. Sometimes it's me (aka my nipples) that gets her to sleep but I don't want to make it a habit.

I think I'd give moving on to something else a shot to see if that could help first. Although thinking about it, when DD was two months, she was often falling asleep while nursing. My girl had a strong need to suck on something, so a pacifier saved us (and my nipples)! We used Avent Soothies--I liked that I could stick my finger in there to keep it warm in the beginning. I would also pull a little bit on it to get her sucking on it. She would nurse, I would wait until I could tell she was done feeding and just hanging out, then quickly take her off and insert a pacifier, keeping her close to me--one quick move.

The one thing about the Avent Soothies is that they would fall out when she was sleeping, waking her up. I read that people like the MAM b/c they are lighter and easier to keep in.

@Corduroy: We had a picky bottle guy and we loved the MAM bottles. The nipple is different than most other brands because its actually flat like a nipple.

I found that the best thing to stop being a pacifier is that when I think they are done, to hop up and get out for a new activity. Take a quick walk down the driveway, dance to some music, or something like that. That way they still have that connection to you being close, but the new surroundings distracts them about nursing.

This may sound harsh but I just never let my kids use me as a pacifier. When they would continue to suck on me when they were done eating I would break their latch and remove them from my breast and I wouldn't let them back on until at least two hours from the beginning of the first feeding to the second feeding had past. They quickly understood that mommy's breasts are for eating only. As for calming them I stuck to the 5 S and carrying them around upright on my chest. It did take them awhile to take to the pacifier - I just kept it in their mouths / reoffering when they were screaming and at some point they usually realized that they could suck on it.
Hugs - I hope it'll get better soon!

T isn't a huge paci fan but if I put my forearm in front of him, he'll suckle on that a bit. It's way better than my nipples

@Kemma: Yeah, our babe never took a pacifier and we did the 5Ses with our ring finger instead.
@Corduroy: she found her fingers at 4 months and still loves them at 2.5 so maybe you can encourage that too?!

Will LO suck on your pinky finger? My little guy wouldn't take a paci in the early days but he would happily suck on my finger! He's now four months old and will take a paci at nap time.

Hang in there, Mama!

I don't have any advice as my 23 month old is comfort nursing as I write this! He never took a bottle/pacifier either.

Good luck.

@MrsSRS: He has taken a Medela bottle a couple of times. Is there a brand that's known for being most like that nipple? I'll try the gripe water.

Do you ever pump and use a bottle? If so have you tried a pacifier that's shaped the same as your bottle? Or tried a few drops of gripe water on the pacifier to get baby interested?

I know a lot of my "problems" with LO1 (crappy naps, awful car rides, bottle refusal) stemmed from me being her pacifier. Even though I promised myself I wouldn't get into that mess again with LO2 here I am at 2 months: undeniable pacifier. If he isn't sleeping or on the boob he's crying. He's finally started to stretch out feedings to more than every hour but he still has a need to be at the breast that frequently.

I've been trying to get DS to take a pacifier since we left the hospital. I've tried three kinds, each for about a week and a half, but no luck. So far nobody has been able to calm this baby down or get him to nap without my nipples. I try to use the K'tan to calm him down sometimes but nurses in there too.

I've ruled out that he's starving. He has almost doubled his birth weight. I don't think he's over tired. We're pretty much following the EASY schedule and his night is 11-12 hours.

I'm frustrated because it seems like I'm doing something really wrong as it's baby#2 like this. My nipples can't be that great.

Do I need to keep trying different pacifiers? Any particular ones? Should I wait until the end of the 4th trimester? He doesn't have colic but definitely has the witching hour fussiness. Any other suggestions?
