@mediagirl: It was a true fear for my LO. I read the poop stuff on the blog, the Ins and Outs of Poop, and LO started fiber gummies. This book below helped, too. Even though she no longer has poop issues she still requests it sometimes as her bedtime story.

My kid has serious pooping trauma for chronic constipation. Now we give her 2 fiber gummies a day and the problem is WAY better!

Hm. We're not there yet, but I am reading Oh Crap! right now in preparation for potty training in the next few weeks. She touches on this problem and says the best thing you can do is sit with her and encourage her ("Just let it out", even if you have to grunt along with her. lol, which sounds funny, but if it works it's probably worth it.

Good luck!

@mediagirl: yes! Well, not my daughter, but look on the blog for Bao's guest post on encopresis (I think that's how it's spelled), also called functional constipation. I read Dr. Tom's book The Ins and Outs of Poop, and his take is that kids who are afraid to poop likely have painful, hard stools, which leads them to not want to go. It's a really good read!!

I hope that it was just a one-off for M, but in the event it wasnt, he's got lots of ideas for how to help overcome it!

Ugh. Has anyone ever had a child say this? My daughter has never had problems with the bathroom and has always been really regular. This morning she had to poop (naturally 5 minutes before we were supposed to leave the house) and she sat on the toilet for 15 minutes telling us she was afraid to poop. :( She finally got it out but she really seemed worried about it happening.

If your lo ever said that to you, was it a true fear or something they just picked up from something someone at school said?
