Just a little update. We're still doing well. It's been 8 days since DS came down with a fever. He still has a bad cough. He's feeling better so we have to be more vigilant to make sure he doesn't get too active playing or have too big of a fit which more easily triggers the scary coughing fits. DS, DD, and I have all seen our temperatures increase slightly in the last two days. Not a fever but we were each in the 99.5 area and feeling off. DS's temp is back to normal today. I took this afternoon off of working from home to nap - which I actually did for 4 hours.

I talked to a pediatrician this morning regarding DS's asthma management. I thought it was going to be DS's pediatrician but it was another doctor standing in for her. She ordered a prescription for an inhaler that DS used to use but our pediatrician decided not to refill previously. She said DH could go to the pharmacy and fill the prescription if he wore a mask. I said ok in the moment but after discussing it with DH we decided it wasn't right to send him into a pharmacy. The pharmacy has their phone on 'we're super busy and can't answer you mode' so I can't switch it to mail delivery.

When I talked to the doctor this morning she confirmed that we will not be tested and made no hypothesis as to what we had. The discussion was very symptoms focused as expected.

We haven't told any of our local friends that we've been sick. The only person we've had contact with prior to getting sick that I've told was DD's teacher. At first I didn't rush to tell anyone because I didn't want them to feel like a sitting duck waiting for it to get them. Maybe it's safe from an anxiety standpoint now that it's been 8 days but now I feel like I've been hiding it.

I'm in Sweden, where there's definitely not enough tests. From what I understand, the default is NOT to think it's the flu or cold and assume it's COVID-19. The symptoms are mind for most people and there is no cure anyway. Just quarantine yourselves to stop the spread. Unless you have preexisting conditions, you just need to do all you can to rest and not spread it

Eta: we're going on 4-weeks of self-quarantined this upcoming week. We were sick before this blew up and now have a very minor coughs. It's been a long, long time for my family.

@Beehive: thanks for checking in! I think DH is getting better. He hasn’t had a fever in a week, but had some tightness in his chest earlier this week. Yesterday, his throat was sore. But today, everything seems better. I’d still love for him to be tested so we’d know if he had it/if it was safe for him to stop self-isolating, but like @Courdoroy, I don’t hold out much hope. We’ll stay holed up until next weekend (2 weeks after onset) and then reevaluate.

@Beehive: Thanks, DD and I are good now. DH still has no symptoms. DS's fever lasted four days and has been gone for 24 hours now. He still gets some scary coughing fits but I'm not sure they're objectively worse than his normal viral induced asthma related stuff (it might just be my stress). Last night was the first night where he only had a few brief wakeups so I hoping he's on his way to getting better. We still haven't had a test and probably won't which is frustrating but I'm not holding out hope.

My friend’s husband, a first responder, tested positive so I can give some insight. He started feeling sick around 3/4. By 3/5, he put a mask on at home to try and not spread it to my friend and daughter. We live near the first mobile testing site in NY, but it was not open when he started feeling sick so there wasn’t any real way to get a test. He tried calling the hospital and it was impossible to speak to a human. After a few more days and constant calling, they gave him a time to show up for testing. They went and there was no testing. The mobile site was about to be set up soon ... maybe there was a few days where he could do nothing. Mobile site opens and he starts calling, nothing. He starts calling the fire chief since he is a fireman and should get priority. He was approved to go to the mobile site on 3/14, so about 1.5 weeks after first falling ill. He finally got his positive result on 3/18. Him and his family have been self isolating anyway so not much more to be done. They told my friend that she should be tested along with the daughter, but can’t we just assume they are positive and save the 2 tests? They are showing no symptoms and will continue to self isolate. Her husband is getting better, thankfully, but still not 100%. He is between 50 and 60, in good general health. He has had all of the symptoms they say except for a very high fever. His temp maxed at 100.3.

So if you or someone else in your home thinks they have it, please all stay home and self isolate.

Semi similar question - does anyone know the length of time it usually takes for symptoms to worsen? I may have been exposed and I've had some chest congestion for 3 days now. But no fever and the congestion was only mildly worse today. If I do have it, can I assume it won't get much worse and I have a mild case? I'm already staying in but I won't grocery shop Saturday as planned, just in case.

@Tionn3: I also talked to Kaiser's Covid-19 nurse line. Kaiser is treating our symptoms which are under control. I'm pretty pleased with the distance care. DS has an asthma diagnosis and they are very concerned about his breathing be it flu, Covid, or whatever. The doctor let me know we will be seen for breathing if needed but fortunately he's well within his normal sickness breathing now.

I work for a hospital in San Diego, and we have been told to call our pcp first if we think we have covid19 (which you have already done). For what it's worth we had 44 cases of flu just this week in our two hospitals, so it is still flu season. I would call your PCP again if you are concerned. Kaiser must have a covid 19 triage nurse line or something too.

The testing situation is extremely frustrating for everyone, there just aren't enough. I believe the quarantine is for the entire household and it is 14 days.

If at anytime you feel like you are unable to manage your symptoms at home, specifically your breathing (like you're really struggling to breath) you need to go to the ER.

Why aren't tests available to confirm in the Bay Area? Could you call your PCP and make a racket?
I think the lack of testing is leading to falsely low case numbers and here in AZ so many aren't taking it seriously.

Ugh, I can't even describe how frustrating and problematic it is that there seems to be NO official guidance on this. My kids were sick last week and I've really been struggling with how strict to be and the correct time frame.

I don't know the answer, but for whatever it's worth, in an article I read about China, they had a 14 day quarantine period after they had returned from the hospital having recovered from the virus (including from their immediate families).

ETA: I see from PP that there is official guidance. It seems to be less conservative than China's.

He should quarantine for 14 days - have a friend or a neighbor shop for you and leave food on the porch. It’s 7 days or longer for you and 72 hours fever-free; longer if you still have symptoms. And then (once you’re both past those timelines) it’s just back to the normal restrictions. They don’t know yet if you can still be periodically shedding the virus after or can get it again, I don’t think. Hope you feel better soon!

Edited to add: this is per CDC and you can find more detail on their website.

My kids and I are sick. DH is also home but so far has no symptoms. I recognize it could be anything and the doctor I talked to tried really hard to make our symptoms fit the flu. It might be the flu but pragmatically there's no way she could tell our fevers, coughs and headaches aren't Covid-19 on the phone.
We're in the Bay Area. Tests are not available to confirm and Kaiser won't give us flu tests because they don't want us to come in (not complaining about that).

Is there an official guide for people that are sick and undiagnosed? I'm wondering how long am I supposed to stay away from stores for essentials and work. 14 days from when we started shelter in place? 14 days from when we feel better? Something else? If DH gets sick would the 14 days start over again?
Can we take socially distanced walks when we feel better? I'm online constantly - I'm sure this is somewhere obvious but I don't see it.

The doctor I spoke to was fine with DH going to the store but shouldn't he be home too? We have a grocery delivery scheduled for Monday so I think we can make it 14 days without shopping.
