@Pollywog: he is almost 2. Once he hits 3 there are actually some really good programs in the area through the school I plan to get him into. Until then it's just OOP because Texas sucks 😑

How old is he? I know my bosses daughter is severely autistic and covered by Medicaid and her parents make $250k+. If he's 3, will the school district cover anything? It is open enrollment, can you switch insurance?

@arosebyany: I just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear this - how frustrating! I live in Canada and therefor no help with the insurance issues but as a teacher I know its really expensive when done privately. Will there be supports and services available when your child enters kindergarten? Families here do receive funding if an Autism diagnosis is made, will there be any funding in your case to spend on therapies?

@gingerbebe: EI in my area is fairly non existent. And would end up costing about the same as what the private will. Thank you so much for he link! This is about what I was looking for, I just never find the .gov sites user friendly enough to navigate. I just now your second post lol. We're looking into private plans now. We have an HSA which we currently are maxing out, even still it's going to be sooo much money.

@macintosh: I looked into chip and already know we don't qualify 😑. I hope you qualify! @magnolia: there are so many different waivers I'm having a hard time figuring out what is what. Good luck on your research!
@bubblegum: @kiddosc: I didn't even think to ask the therapist, but I definitely will when we go Wednesday. Thank y'all!
@Mama Bird: I asked about the cash price, and it's only a $3 difference 😑 Stupid Texas lol
@pinkb: I know it's just ridiculous!

So sorry you are going through this. Our insurance covers nothing for speech Or occupational therapies and it's just maddening. We can't afford it out of pocket especially after our monthly insurance premium. So I had to search and search for places that help and finally found one that we could afford. I hope you can do the same! Give yourself some time to be upset about it but try to keep pushing along even though it's really hard sometimes.

@arosebyany: Also, I don't know what your husband's insurance situation is like, but I would look into either changing his insurance plan to one that is more favorable to your diagnose (even if it wont be until next open enrollment) and/or maxing out your FSA so that you can apply pre-tax dollars to any services your child needs. I would also look into getting separate insurance for your child.

Is this separate from early intervention? Generally EI is either covered or they ask you to do a cost share that's income-tied, so its not TOO awful. Private insurance usually will fill in whatever EI won't cover.

You should definitely look into Medicaid waivers that take the income caps off services, although wait lists in a state like Texas can be long.

Also, it looks like in TX you can buy in to Medicaid programs:

https://yourtexasbenefits.hhsc.texas.gov/programs/health/child/buy-in

I would be willing to bet that the speech clinic you mentioned in your other post has a financial office that can help you with this. They will know who you need to call and can most likely help you with jumping through the hoops. It sounds like it would be a common problem in your area.

Yeah, the "family unfriendly" insurance scene of Texas.... I'm sorry, I hope you can find some alternative. Maybe you can negotiate down the cost of what you're paying out of pocket.

@arosebyany: I'm so sorry you're going through this. Do not beat yourself but and feel like you're not helping your son. By making these moves, these calls, you're doing just that.

Maybe there's a second insurance you can apply for, even if you have to pay a premium, that will cover what your first insurance will not. Ask your OT and other therapists, most of the time they have experience with similar cases and can lead you in the right direction.

I know right now it seems hopeless and you want to curl up in a ball, but don't give up hope, mama.

@arosebyany: hey I’m sorry. I’m going to do some research this weekend! I would look into eventually getting a Medicaid waiver once/if he gets the asd diagnosis. That means the income limits for Medicaid are waived because the child has a developmental disability. Xo

I'm so sorry! I know what it's like to have tons of medical expenses that you can't afford, yet not qualify for income-based programs. Can you look on the Obamacare marketplace for secondary insurance? It's open enrollment right now. I'm also going to look into CHIP for my son since my insurance premium through work is going up.

I just got off the phone with my husbands insurance, and they cover absolutely nothing in regards to an autism diagnosis. There are no ABA theraphy benefits and they only allow 20 visits of OT and ST A year. Ds will be going 2x a week so that's 104 a year. That leaves 84 that won't apply to my insurance at all. I don't even k ow what to say! It was all I could do not to cry on the phone with the insurance rep. Google is also no help for trying to find resources in the state of Texas and he definitely won't qualify for Medicaid because it's income based. Right now I feel like DH and I pay all these taxes to alllll these different government programs and now comes a time when I need to use one of them and of course I can't help my own child! I'm sooooo lost right now! I'm sorry y'all I just need to vent!
