I waited a bit after starting purees. My understanding of BLW though is to give them large pieces. It sounds counter intuitive, but they are more likely to choke on small pieces at that developmental stage.

I started purees at 4 months because she was ready and I was terrified that she was going to choke on real food. Gradually, we started introducing more table food as she got older. At 9 months, she eats more table food than purees.

Go with your gut and don't feel like you're doing something wrong. Maybe a more modified BLW (like what we did) is more appropriate for your family?

I was too, and I waited until a little over 6 months. But, I followed what the book said and gave her large pieces that were big enough to grab. It said that the first few weeks are only discovery and very little food will be eaten. Also, a baby's gag reflex is so far up on their tongue, that they will gag way before there is danger of them choking. Knowing those things really helped me

We started giving her avocados (mushy) and asparagus (good, long handle).

ETA: This was her with asparagus :-) She kind of chewed on it, but didn't really eat anything. But it got her used to holding it and bringing it to her mouth.

We just did what felt right. At 4 months he was "mm-mmmm-"ing and would start to cry if I ate in front of him. I knew that he wanted to start solids even though I wasn't really ready myself, haha. I started offering purees, cereal, yogurt - he gobbled it up. Slowing I started offering him bites of my food and we've worked our way up from there. There isn't much that this kid won't eat at 13 months. And he loves feeding himself. There are certain things I still feed him with a spoon, soup, baked beans, etc. but I have to give him a spoon to hold while I feed it to him because he wants to do it himself so badly.

I'm still scared to death of her choking. I offer her purees and some real food each night. I had a scare last night that I think has sent me back to puree and tiny food pieces land for a while...

I got nervous too! We decided to start off with purées (5.5 months). Now at 8 months she's pretty good at chewing, so we're doing part purées and part BLW. I mainly just let her eat mushy stuff, and I cut it into very small pieces. She loves feeding herself!

We did a modified approach, and it its so much fun! And messy, and yes, kinda scary too. He has enjoyed food so much over the last several months, it is great to see!

I broke food from my plate into smaller, less choke-able pieces for peace of mind, and let him go at it. We did purees when I was in a hurry too, just whatever food was available day to day, and depending what kind of mood we both were in.

Tonight he tried to stuff a whole piece of avocado roll in his mouth, it was hilarious! It gets less scary (mostly)!

@stargal: I was scared too and my gut was right. He's now 7 1/2 months and a couple weeks ago I realized that he was ready to blw. (he didn't like purees though either prior)

He manages food himself now and if I give him pieces that are too big, he will bite them off into smaller pieces. I don't think a month ago he would have done that.

@pastemoo: thanks! My gut tells me thataybe we should wait a.month or two to do full on blw. Right now with it he just plays with the food ( which I know is completely normal) with the purees he squeals and reaches and wantse to keep shoveling it in his mouth so I know he enjoys food. Seripusly sometimes i cant feed him fast enpgh before he squeals for more.....maybe he just like me feeding him lol.

Go with your gut. Momma (and daddy) know(s) best! I didn't plan to do BLW but my son refuses food unless it is from my plate.

You might want to start with mushy stuff like banana or super steamed/boiled carrots.
Good luck! I'm sure your LO will do great!
