@pastemoo: I'm doing the Newport 10K in Jersey City, NJ which literally starts outside the door of my apartment building haha. I really need to sign up for a color run in NYC though, I've heard they're so much fun!

@Mrs D: good to know! I just wanted to compare a little bit, just seeing if I'm even around the same speed as other people. I have a friend that says when she walks on a treadmill she walks at like 4.5-5.0 soooo...I thought I was REALLY slow!

@MrsBrewer: when I start I am right around where you are...3.5 walk and 5 run. Its where I am comfortable starting and I always start off just going for time not distance (especially on the treadmill). I have yet to get comfortable ever jogging for a long time over 5.5. I have a very good friend who is a crazy marathon/tri girl and she said first get comfortable with your body moving for that length of time/distance then worry about speed! So I follow her advice....besides, the fun 5K usually aren't for seriously fast paced runners (at least not on that day)...

Week 1 day 1 of couch to 5k complete! I made it!! I completed all the running parts too without cheating. I have really short legs so I walk at a pretty slow pace but I was doing the walking part at 3.0 and the running at 5.0

@MrsBrewer: Adding a 4th day by doing a long walk is a great place to start! Once you've built up to it, the 4th day can become another run or run/walk.

@MrsSCB: Before I started training for my first half marathon, the longest distance I'd ever run was 7 or 8 miles. I never imagined running a full marathon either, but I did! You might get addicted. :)

That sounds like such a fun race!

My tips: if you find someone to run and train with it, it's so much more fun.

Buy good socks.

Also, keep a training log. Nothing fancy, just a sentence or two for each run. It will help you to see patterns as to why you had a good run or a bad run, and it's a great keepsake. You'll see that you went for getting winded after just a minute to being able to run the whole thing!

@IRunForFun: I'm so impressed with your marathon running! I don't know if I could ever work up to that. I'm working towards a 10K now, which is definitely going to be the farthest I've ever run haha. I am finding that the more I run, though, the more I like it, so who knows? :-)

Like everyone else said, you will have a blast!

I liked the couch to 5K program. Just remember, that you can do the same workout multiple days in a row if you aren't quite ready for the next level. Push yourself, but recognize when you might be working too hard.

@MrsBrewer: I wouldn't start out by training every day if I were you, you don't want to overdo it and get injured and not be able to continue. I'd follow the program as it is, and maybe add one extra day of low impact cardio if you want to, such as the elliptical. Or you could do one day of strength training.

@Mrs D: That's a great idea!! I think I'm going to just start on my treadmill to just start building up some sort of stamina. Then maybe week 2-3 I will do 1 day per week outside!

Do you think I would be over ambitious to try training everyday?

@MrsBrewer: In that case - follow the program and as PP mentioned do it religiously! I did 4 workouts a week (doubling up on one from the program which is 3 a week) and honestly you will be impressed how well it breaks you in to being a runner! If you plan to train on a treadmill I suggest trying to run outside every once in a while, especially when you get up to the higher intervals. I did my whole program on the treadmill and found some of the longer runs boring...outside I find it so much less boring!

@MrsBrewer: Yay! Love when someone does a couch to 5k! Hoping it helps you get hooked and you keep signing up for more 5ks and eventually something longer! It's such a great natural high once you're finished!

As for tips...get yourself some good running shoes if you don't have any already. Make sure you stretch after each run to prevent injury. Keep hydrated as much as you can, and really concentrate on your breathing. It will help with cramping...in through your nose, out through your mouth.

Keep us posted on your progress!!
