We organized the milk into bags by month. It helped make sure we didn't loose any and we could get a general idea how much was in the freezer.

@mrbee: That's an interesting article! A few of those points definitely apply to me... I think my biggest problem is that I'm a huge control freak and I *need* things done a very certain way. My husband is suuuuuper laid-back, though. We usually balance each other out pretty well.

@Rock n Roll: Awh, what a sweet email! :D

@mrsjazz: Thanks for the tip! I am definitely doing the gift bag system tonight.

I am considering still keeping my list just for my own statistical purposes, though. Am I total weirdo? I won't make him cross them off anymore!

@Rock n Roll: Too many steps! I swear by "keep it simple, stupid!" method sometimes for DH.

I have been using the gift bag system since the beginning and it's great. Just make sure you freeze the storage bag of milk first in the freezer before placing it in the gift bag. If you throw it in before it's fully frozen it could defrost the bag below it.

@mrbee: He says he doesn't know how to dress himself or the children because he went to Catholic school and always wore uniforms. Yesterday we went to pick up the toddler from her CDO program during my lunch break, and he had the baby wearing a hot pink onesie, navy pants with big colored polka dots, and a leopard print sweatshirt. I was like, "Well THIS is an interesting one." And he had the biggest grin on his face, and said, "I thought you'd have something to say about that."

Like I said, he's trying to be ridiculous now!

Yeah, my husband would probably do the same thing. Anytime any of our kids are crying his mind just goes blank and panics.

I love the gift bag idea! Genius! With my first I pumped for an entire month (to figure out allergies) so I built a good stash and used the First Years Milk Storage. I loved it! Just put the newly pumped milk in the back so the oldest is always in the front.

On the subject of fashion, fashion jokes can be no joke! I just don't have that sense, so I no longer dress the kids for anything important unless the outfit has been selected and approved.

@mrbee: That's a really interesting article! I think we have a pretty good balance and I try not to be too controlling and let him do things his way and he lets me do them mine. I think the only thing I really criticize him for is his horrible fashion sensibilities when he dresses the girls (which is pretty much a joke between us now. I think he's TRYING to come up with ridiculous things at this point.)

But we usually get along so well in all our parenting stuff and I think that's why this annoyed me so much. Also, I think there is some guilt in it because the milk stash is getting low and I didn't notice (because he didn't mark off the list) and I felt bad because I went to bed without pumping first a couple of times this week not realizing we could use more milk.

@MungBean: But we love them anyway! And he just sent me this email so now I feel bad for complaining:

I went through all the milk and crossed out the ones that weren't there, so the list is now up to date. I was crossing them off as I went but fell behind. I know you work hard pumping and it takes a lot of time and energy and I really really really appreciate what you do, not just with that, but with the overall hard work that you put in for our family. Just keep in mind that sometimes when I have a screaming baby and a crying toddler and I'm tired and I'm trying to get dishes or laundry done, I may forget to cross off the list.

Love you!

@Rock n Roll: @MungBean: I don't know enough to tell if this applies to your families, but there's something called the Gatekeeper syndrome which affects a lot of households:

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1219962,00.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatekeeper_parent

It's a tricky pattern and I found myself falling into it a few times myself!

@Rock n Roll: Do we have the same husband?? :P Hahaha. My husband is the exact same way. He gets annoyed and says I'm nagging if I keep bringing it up, but if I don't, our entire household will fall apart. Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration ;), but seriously - I don't understand why some things that come so naturally to me are so foreign to him.

@MungBean: That's the worst! And it's so frustrating because you try to emphasize that it's minor, but important, but then they don't do it.

It's like, I can make a big deal about it and give him huge detailed instructions and then he's mad because I'm treating him like a child, but if I don't make a big deal about it, then he won't do it. So the only way to get it done is to piss him off about it.

Hahaha I love your use of FIFO, too! I get really annoyed with the husband about stuff like this. I had a dentist appt yesterday so for the first time ever, he had to give LO purees for dinner. I asked him to defrost one cube and put the rest of the bag back into the freezer immediately. Well, this morning I realized that he must have left the bag out on the counter for awhile, because all the cubes had melted together into one big gigantic mess. Ugh! There goes my hard work.

@BabyBoecksMom: Wow, that is an AWESOME idea! I know I have some old gift bags in the closet at home, so I can rig that up tonight. That actually solves this whole problem, because the major purpose of the list is to there isn't old milk not getting used or milk going missing. (Basically don't want this happening!)

http://www.babyrabies.com/2012/08/breastmilk-on-ice/

So, I can follow Mr. Bee's advice and just get rid of his whole need to cross off the old milk and I can stop being mad at him. Yay!

Sorry to hear about the difficulties. :(

I've run into sort of similar problems at work, where people don't want to do an extra step when they're in a hurry. What's generally worked best is to redesign the process so that the extra step isn't necessary?

For example, rather than write the milk time and amount on the fridge... you could write it on a post-it and put in the bag. Then when he takes the bag out, he could put the post-it on the fridge or on a piece of paper?

Are your bags labeled with the date? Maybe you could use the gift bag approach so that the one he grabs will always be the oldest one?

Every time I put milk I pumped in the freezer, I write it down on a sheet hanging from the fridge, and I asked that every time he takes some out of the fridge, he cross it off so I can keep track of how much there is, so I can pump more if needed and also so that no milk stays in there too long and gets really old.

He wasn't pulling them out in FIFO order so I started putting them in order for him so he wouldn't have to worry about finding the oldest milk to feed the baby because I know that can be stressful if she's hungry and crying. But today I found out he stopped crossing off the milks he's used on the list. And his excuse was the same, "Well, if she's crying, it's hard to do!"

I'm sorry, but it takes literally seconds to draw a line and I have a pen right there to do it. I have tried to make it as easy as possible for him, and it's the littlest thing for him to have to do, when I go through all the trouble of pumping this milk in the first place!

Ugh, I know this isn't even that big of a deal, but it's just the principle of it. I work so hard to make sure she can have milk to eat while I'm at work and all I ask of him is to draw a line and he doesn't do it!
