I agree with many of the other ladies, go with your gut. If there is an urgent care clinic I'd probably go there if I wanted to avoid my GP & get a second opinion. Better safe then sorry & I'd totally tell your friend to STFU!

Aww, W :( I hope she feels better soon! I think if you're worrying and you aren't a worrier normally, than to take her in. I've never regretted taking them in when something has been wrong.

My threshold for recommending that kids go to the hospital is three or less wet diapers in a day, not making tears, change in behavior to indicate that the child is listless or decreased level of consciousness.

The symptoms you describe are not consistent with a "flu"- high fever, cough, runny nose are typical of flu. I can't really tell you what LO has, but it does sound like you are bordering on some worrisome symptoms. If you continue to be concerned, I would get a second set of eyes on your LO.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I'm sure she'll be fine. Does your pediatrician have an after hours nurse line? Whenever DD starts puking or has super bad diarrhea I call the doctor and the ER to see what they say.

I'm so sorry Willa feels so badly!

Last time Tyler was sick it was horrendous. No puking but days of 103 fever - not eating or drinking much, not sleeping except on me and not sleeping at all at night (a few hours at most). It lasted about 3 days and then he had a light rash and then got better - turns out it was roseola. He cried off and on all day.

I'm sure she is fine. She is vaccinated against the big stuff, right? If so all you can do is make her comfortable with Advil or Tylenol and Molmmy snuggles and ride it out. If you really do think something is amiss then I would take her in for your own peace of mind.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I am always a proponent of trusting your gut. If you think some thing is wrong, take her. The worst that can happen is that they tell you that its stomach flu and theres nothing they can do. You're only out a few hours of your time. If there is something wrong, you need to k ow. If there isnt, at least it will put your mind at ease.

@regberadaisy: We do live close to a pediatric hospital. A really good one. It's actually walking distance from where I work. I am trying to convince DH that I just have a weird gut feeling. Or maybe it's fear. Who knows.

I completely agree with @Espion: . If you think something is wrong take her to a pediatric hospital. Better safe than sorry.

Has she had wet diapers?

When M was listless/lethargic is when we took her back to the ped and INSISTED that something was wrong. Finally the ped sent her for a chest x ray and we found pneumonia.

You're her only advocate.

Do you have a emergency care center near you that caters to kids? Wait times might be less than Er. Regardless for either you do need to call your ped first.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: yep. She was very cranky and whiny and cried a lot. I think its really just the only way they know how to react when they dont feel good. She NEVER wakes up at night and she was up 2-3 times a night crying and throwing up. She did better after we switched her to all pedialyte instead of giving her formula. Dairy made the vomiting worse for her.

It may be nothing or it may be something. You are entirely justified in your "mom radar". If you are concerned, take her to the hospital (preferably a peds ER if a children's hospital is available) or your pediatrician. The only thing it hurts is your time and pocketbook. Depending on how old your LO is and how they assess them, they may do a thorough fever workup. Keep in mind that this may involve a spinal tap (to obtain some cerebrospinal fluid for labs and culture), urine culture, poop culture, and nasal/throat swab.

@Cole: Well I did talk to the nurse at our pediatric office. I told her that her fever had broken and that she was keeping food (breastmilk) down, and the nurse said that she "would probably fine." (not very helpful)

Have I mentioned I am in the market for a new pediatrician? I hate ours!

I just don't want to take her to the hospital and sit there for 10 hours only for them to tell me that she has the flu and needs tylenol + pedialyte.

Is there another medical person you could call? Sometimes knowing that "X" is going around can help you make a decision. Some people have a nurse line through their insurance, we have a pediatric urgent care with a great triage line, perhaps you have a similar option?

Second, if youre really worried. Take her to a doctor.

I will say, C has had stomach flu twice now and thats just how she acted. The first time, she hardly moved for 2 days. All she did was throw up and lay around all listless. We took her to the ER, thinking she was dehydrated. She just wanted to sleep and lay on the couch with me.
