Sounds okay as long as he is gaining weight and having enough wet and dirty diapers a day. If you're concerned and want to do an extra feeding during those long naps or even MOTN, maybe you can wake him to do it if you think he'll go right back to sleep. I was able to wake both of my boys (2 and 5 now) around 4AM every night for a MOTN feeding (they used to wake around 8AM then) and they were both fine falling asleep on their own right after. Some nights they never woke up!

@Danizaur: I would think every three hours is pretty normal- that's about where we were for a long time- but c was still waking up at night too. Maybe check back with the ped but sounds fine to me.

Google the breastfeeding magic number. It talks about the number of times each mom needs to nurse in a 24 hr period but explains that it's different for each mom

Sounds totally fine to me! We were down to 6 feedings at that age, but occasionally we'd only do 5!

@Anagram: it's normal. He's on the low side of normal but his ped said all was good at his last appt which was April 25th.

We're going to weigh him this evening and make sure. Thanks for the info. That's good to know!!!

@Danizaur: sounds like our schedule. we were down to 5 or 6 feeds by 3 months and that stayed the same until we fully introduced solids.

And is his weight gain normal, on the low side, on the high side?

I don't think STTN is ever necessarily an indication of how well a baby is eating during the day. I've now had a friend (and there was someone here on HB) whose babies started STTN but weren't gaining the weight they should and when The mamas got the directions to start feeding more often, their supply was too far gone at that point.

I know pee and poopy diapers are the conventional advice given by LC, but for me personally that has always been unreliable. My LO went an entire 48 hour period once only drinking 8 oz each day (teething we think) and she still had wet diapers and one poopy diaper. I feel like it's too hard to tell how much they've peed, you can only see/smell the diaper and know they have.

So I'd say the best predictor is weight gain. I would probably do a couple of weight checks (my Ped will do it anytime we stop by), and then you'll know for sure.

You might just have a really efficient feeder and boobs with a large capacity though!

If he's gaining weight, has plenty of wet/dirty diapers, appears to be thriving and such, I wouldn't be worried. Your milk may also be fattier and more filling, so he may not need to nurse a bunch if times throughout the day. There was a point when my daughter around 4mos would go every 4 hours between sessions during the day and then a few months later wanted to stay latched 24/7, lol.

When you are together, how far apart are the feedings? I agree with the others that if he has enough wet diapers and is gaining you are probably fine.

To me it sounds fine if all signs are good that he is growing - and if you're able to pump what he needs when separated. Typical intake is about 20-30 oz per day, if he's feeding 5x and nursing both sides and getting 2-3 oz per side each time, that gives you 20-30 oz. Even if you're very full in the morning and he only nurses one side he's probably getting 4-6 oz then.

I don't think you should be worried. If you are really concerned, you can take him to your pedi for a weight check and they can tell you how much he should have per day. Dd is a week older I think-she takes 3 4 oz bottles in a 10 hr time span and also sttn, in addition to nursing her when I get up and put her to bed.

T is 12 weeks old and will be 3 months on Wednesday (FOR REAL? It seems like just last week I was crying to HB because I couldn't take the false labor anymore!). He only nursed 5 times today. That can't be right, right?

He sleeps through the night so I know I'm losing feedings there. But what really concerns me is if he's getting used to the smaller amount of feedings at the babysitters. He only takes 2 bottles because he sleeps so much during the day.

All the signs that he's getting enough are there, although he's been fussy lately but I expect that a growth spurt is on the horizon. I'm terrified of doing something to harm my supply, but honestly, we nurse on demand. He sleeps 3 hours in the morning and another 2 in the afternoon then goes to bed around 7 and doesn't wake until 5am (on a good day). Maybe once a week we'll have a MOTN feeding.

Should I be worried?
