I've had both. I requested the Implanon be removed far before it had to be because I was miserable on it. I'm on my second Mirena and am much happier.

@mrs. tictactoe: I had implanon (the precursor to nexplanon) and hated it. I basically had a period at least twice a month. Now on Mirena and mostly happy!

@mrs. tictactoe: I ended up getting the Mirena IUD and so far am not loving it! It's bern 3 months and I'm still "spotting" which is almost a full pad or tampon everyday and I am SO sick of it! I'm hanging in there for one more month and if it doesn't stop getting it removed.

Anyone else have any experience? My doctor seems to like the implant better. Also, I know someone who has spotting for 6 months with her IUD. And someone else who had to go to the ER in pain to find that her IUD had turned upside down. All of the options scare me, but I know we should do something...

I haven't done the implant, but talked to my dr about & it sounded horrible! She said the irregular bleeding isn't just spotting, it's full on blood flow & not just when you start it, the irregular bleeding can happen the whole time you have it. There was also some TMI convo in my FB feed recently where some ladies were complaining about theirs and a bunch commenting that they had theirs removed because it gave them miserable side effects. I'd go IUD if I could.

If you've had kids and want long term birth control, I'd go with the IUD. The Nexplanon is only good for 3 years and a fair number if women have irregular bleeding on it. I think k the IUD is a great choice for a woman who has already had kids (passes through the cervix easier) and the Nexplanon is good for younger people who don't need birth control for as long.

Has anyone had experience with both? Which did you prefer? I was planning on getting an IUD but just heard about the implant and now can't decide. We are 90% sure we're done having kids but will reassess in a few years so I want something easy.
