It's relatively important for me.

It was pretty hard to find secular names. Names with bad meanings are immediately crossed out. Names with neutral meanings were placed lower on the list, but were okay to stay.

Doesn't really matter to us.

DS1's name means "from South Munster" (one of ancient Ireland's five regions). DS is only a teeny tiny bit Irish.

DS2's name means "feller" or "hewer" in Hebrew.

Neither have particularly stellar meanings lol

@raspberries: to me "dark one" would mean dark in coloring - maybe dark hair, eyes or skin tone

My daughter's name means "fair" - does it mean fair like light skin, hair, eyes or fair as in "she plays fair" - either way its quite fitting for her as she's pretty light complected and also a libra. even though at the time i swore up and down she would look like me with dark hair and eyes she doesnt

My name means "crowned one" and i was born and to this day have a ton of hair, I'm also a Leo (king of the jungle) with a mane of hair. so also quite fitting.

I think there's a difference between a name's definition and its meaning. We chose names that have great meaning to me and DH - namesakes, religion, family and style were all considerations. That meaning was more important to me than the dictionary definition (though who wouldn't like a lovely definition, if that happened to match). A blogger I read, Abby Sandel at Appellation Mountain had a quote that summed it up well:
"Mallory doesn’t mean sorrowful if your parents met in Mallory, Indiana. Then it means ‘small town where my parents met.’ And if your parents happened to meet there because it was a dark and stormy night, and your mom had a flat tire and the repair shop was closed and your dad just happened to be in town for a meeting and suddenly, there they were nursing coffee at the Mallory Diner just one seat apart … well, then your name means ‘serendipity, twist of fate."

The last thing I'll say is that I'm super dubious of some of the definitions people find for baby names, some good and some bad.

@oliviaoblivia: Yes a version of this! They a go back to the Latin word for lame. And it perfectly fits what we want for a name :bummed:
@Pumuckl: Interesting! We are considering Alexander and I thought the meaning was different. I'll have to look into it more.
@Corduroy: funny how you can apply personality traits to name meanings! LO1's middle name means white and sure enough he is the whitest white kid you could ever meet. LO2's na me means farmer and his favorite activity is digging up all my plants outside lol.
@honeybear: absolutely we are considering the history too, which is part of the appeal. It works with both LO names.

I should probably add that by "meaning," I mean the etymology/derivation/definition, which I think of as distinct from the historical people or fictional characters who had the name. We definitely considered historical/literary precedent.

With LO1 I wasn't too concerned about the meaning. Her name means dawn which I thought was sweet. Then we had over a year of pre-dawn wakeups and the name meaning started to bother me. I certainly don't think her name choice had an impact on her wake up time, it was more of a joke. However, I made sure LO2's name didn't mean anything that I thought would bother me if it were tied to his actions/personality. He has a profession-type name.

Our LO's name means either "ray of light" or "dark one" depending on which language it's used in... I liked the name enough to use it and hope he leaned toward the ray of light meaning.

@skipra: for me the meaning is extremely important. We typically choose biblical names and the meaning of the name is a big factor. I would choose a name that had a bad meaning.
Having said that make sure you get the meaning from a reliable source some websites have the wrong meanings. If you Google the etymology of a name that helps to get an accurate origin and meaning of a name

Unless its a clear direct translation from another language, its hard to imagine names to go with those. Plus I feel like you can google any name and practically get 10 different "meanings".

Claudia!

We considered name meanings if they were negative. I definitely looked up the meaning of my name when I was growing up and liked that it had different meanings in different cultures. It made me feel special. I didn't want my girls to look their names up and feel badly about the meanings.
That said, my eldest daughters name was used by Shakespeare and suffers a pretty horrific tragedy. Her name meaning is really pretty though.

I'm torn on this one. My daughter's name was the perfect combo of us actually loving the name itself and it's meaning. For #2 (boy), we are having the same issue as you though, all the names we like don't have the greatest meanings. I've decided to ignore it unless the meaning is really terrible. I think if there is a family connection, that could definitely trump the actual meaning.

Btw, my name also means One who supplants, and it hasn't affected me in the least.

DH and I are still struggling with finding the perfect baby name. There are a couple names that we like but the meaning of the name is horrible.

For example:
Sorrowful
One who supplants
Lame

We don't have any special attachment to the first two, but the third one is really growing on me and is a variation of my grandmother's name so it has personal meaning. I do know as a kid I looked up the meaning of my name but overall I don't think it has affected my life. What is your opinion on name meanings?
