The bleeding is commonly 4-6 weeks postpartum. The key point is that it should get progressively less and less each week. Near the end, it turns white in color, like discharge. Some moms notice this, some don't. If bleeding increases, call your OB (my OB worries if I soak a pad in less than an hour). When your period returns can vary. If you are exclusively breastfeeding it likely won't come back for several months, but it's different for everyone. Kellymom has good info on this. You can also read about contraceptive options while bf'ing on there and then discuss with your OB at the next visit. The most popular options postpartum are the mini pill (progesterone only pill) for bf'ing moms and also Mirena. Know that it's very important for the mini pill to be taken at exactly the same time every day (well, there's a 3 hr window... but the more consistent, the better, otherwise the failure rate goes way up).

Huh. My mom said "you won't be able to wait 6 weeks to have sex, are you kidding?" and then "don't worry, you can still have sex whenever you want, just be prepared." My mom cracks me up.

As pp said bleeding and periods differ for everyone so the ob couldn't give you an answer on that one.

@artbee: we must be brave then. ;)

I feel like they won't have the answers to your questions because like everybody said, it's different for everyone. I didn't even get a 2 week apt, we waited until 6 weeks. I wasn't told to take a stool softener for that long (but did take it for a while anyway) and I could not imagine anyone being brave enough to have sex before 6 weeks.

I'd probably make another appointment to see her (maybe first thing in the morning, if possible) because it really doesn't seem like you got all your questions answered.
My OB is chronically late (30-45 minutes on average) but I still make her give me the full amount of time I need to answer all my questions.

The length of time you can expect to bleed varies from woman to woman. Additionally, depending on your body, your period may not come back for quite awhile. Mine didn't come back until I had weaned my son at 9 months (and then it still took another month for it to actually appear). Other women I know, even while breastfeeding, got their period back within only 2-3 months.

I think the bleeding and period varies a lot. I expect her to talk with you on those topics during the next appt along with birth control. That is what happened to me. But you can always call in the meantime.

I had 2 week follow-up appt. with my OB, but my doc was running 1 hr behind, so I felt like she just checked to make sure I was healing nicely after L&D and went over very quickly some things about post-pregnancy recovery, but I still feel like I don't have all the info.

This is what she told me....am I missing any other impt info?

1. No sex or certain exercises (crunches, jogging, and swimming) for 6 wks
2. If we do have sex, use a condom and lube
3. Keep taking stool softener for 2 mos
4. I can start pumping now since it looks like my milk is well established
5. Keep taking prenatal vitamins
6. No dietary restrictions
7. Apply Mederma on my stretch marks

Then I have another appt. to see her in 2 mos.

But...she didn't tell me about how long I should expect to bleed? When I would be getting my period? We really didn't talk about contraceptives other than condoms.
