@highwire: I'm so sorry you're feeling sick! :-(

I'm finally back, almost all of the things I was going to suggest have already been stated BUT...again I'll reiterate, start small. Baby steps. Instead of a bagel for breakfast have an egg and a smoothie. I make smoothies on Sunday in freezer safe ball brand cups and have them for the week. No daily cleanup or worry.

The only big thing I did was cut processed carbs, I got creative w/meals and gradually started eating them once I wasn't dependent on them. Instead of regular pasta I use veggie pasta, instead of a cream sauce it's red sauce, stuff like that.

I also 100% agree that you need top,an ahead. Not only is it easier but it's cheaper. I fix my lunch box the night before so I don't have to worry about it when I'm rushing to get ready.

When I bring groceries in I wash/cut the veggies and fruit right then so it's as easy to grab as the chips are-no excuses :-)

Most importantly? Let yourself cheat. Without letting yourself indulge within reason you'll go crazy!

Feel free to MSG me anytime, I went from 100% sedentary junk food junkie to being active and eating healthy a majority of the time. My health has improved exponentially, as well as my own mental wellness! <3

I'm so sorry you're having a rough go of things. Since you're overwhelmed, I'd just focus on one tiny thing to improve in your life. Once a week, add a new thing. Just take your time. Even if it's as simple as "drink more water" or "don't eat chips this week".

I have gone through a really rough depression period and have also been overweight... my advice would be to start with walking 30 mins a day. Even if you can't bear to do anything else... Hope something changes for you soon!

Have you had your iron levels tested or are you taking a good multi-vitamin? Pregnancy and breastfeeding can take a lot out of your body so it might be worth taking some kind of supplement just in case.

In terms of food, would taking it one meal at a time help? I know lots of changes can be really overwhelming but just thinking about one meal can make change much more manageable. Maybe start with breakfast each day and then lunch etc?

Hang in there Mama!

@highwire: set yourself a goal this week you know you can achieve so that by the end of the week you feel good about something and have motivation to do more next week. Small changes are best and just add another one once you've got the previous change under control.

Also write down what you're eating. Sometimes seeing it on paper makes us realise what we're doing and shocks us into change. Or it shows us where we need to make the changes.

Hugs! <3 I know how you feel. For the entire first year of DD's life, I felt like I was just trying to survive. At 13 months, she is sleeping through the night, some of my life stresses have melted away and I'm ready to focus on myself again.

I started by cutting out easy things like, cream in my coffee, fast food, sweets. Soon that became including more fruits and veggies. Then I started to cut back on snacking. The small adjustments have really helped me.

I've only been doing this and working out for 3 weeks. It really helped me to have someone kick me in the butt (my sister). Taking classes at the gym have forces me to be active and they've been fun/relaxing too!

I hit that point a few months ago too. I just felt crappy, was tired all the time, and was taking zero time for myself- everything was about work, baby or husband.

My Fitness Pal is a great place to start. Actually learning how many calories you take in a day and what kinds of foods you are eating regularly- it helped my accountability a lot.

The other thing that helped was joining the local YMCA- this was not my choice initially, but now I love it!! My husband's work gets a steep membership discount there, and I can get $25 a month off of gym membership through work if I go 8 times a month. I was only going to do this to help save money and give our son some kid interactions and playtime in the gym daycare.

I found that I love it for me time, I can put on my music and walk, run, or cycle- I have a lot more energy afterwards to chase down my little guy and I'm not hungry after working out, so that helps cut down on my snacking.

@highwire: I have found meal planning to be REALLY helpful to me. I make my worst food choices when I'm hungry and rushed and I want to just grab something quickly. So now every Sunday hubs and I plan out the whole week and shop for everything. Also... I know how impossible it is to work out with LO's this age. What about a family walk around the neighborhood in the evenings. It won't burn a ton of calories but it will at least get you moving a bit to help you feel less lethargic.

I started taking a whole food natural vitamin (new chapter brand), substituting a green smoothie for lunch and getting some exercise everyday. Even a 20 min walk with LO makes me feel better. Try and drink at least 8 glasses of water and remove any other beverages. Get some rest! Even if I don't sleep when DD naps, I lay down and read or just relax. Green smoothies have changed my life!

Here's the recipe I use:
1 banana
1 cup almond milk (unsweetened vanilla)
2 handfuls of kale
4 tsp flax seed
4 tsp chia seed
1 tbsp almond butter with honey

When I fall off the food bandwagon I have the best luck starting back with one meal cooked a week and easing back into it. I know both you and your hubby work FT so maybe try ad have each of you be in charge of a healthy meal once a week? It sounds stupid but even designating one day chicken one day vegetarian one day pork makes deciding and planning easier for me.

Can you find a way to exercise with, or at least around, your LO? I used to set LO up on the couch and dance around in front of him when he was really little. He totally dug it, and even 10 minutes made me feel much better. Now he climbs on my back while I do planks and stuff, and I make an effort to run around outside with him regularly (not running-running, but playing-running...I'm just not a 'real' runner!).

I think it's easier if you can find something child-friendly to do. I have never liked gyms and once LO started really moving around, my dance/exercise videos started collecting dust. But he's always been up for going outside, so sometimes I take him to the outdoor par course and do some girly pull-ups and jumping jacks and whatever other silly things they tell me to do on the sign. Or I just chase him around. :) (If your LO isn't that mobile, there's no reason she can't just enjoy the outdoors from her stroller while you do your thing!) I also keep a stash of CDs I can dance to near the CD player and pop one in for a quick dance party with LO now and then. I used to just carry him around when I did this, but now he wants to dance too!

I agree with @tinyperson that tracking calories is helpful when my eating gets out of control (generally when I'm stressed, upset, feeling blue). I like the MyFitnessPal app.

Would a morning walk (before it gets too hot) and an afternoon/evening workout DVD (I hear a lot of people like the Jillian Michaels DVDS) or even the 7 minute workout (http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/09/the-scientific-7-minute-workout/) be doable during the day?

I hope you can start back up with the yoga! I find that doing some sort of yoga/fitness class 2-3 times a week is great emotionally and physically.

My plan of attack when I feel that way is to start counting calories using sparkpeople or similar. When I know what I'm consuming, I find it easier to make better choices! It's hard though when breastfeeding - I'm hungry! Maybe do as others have said and focus on one meal or snacks and try to make healthy choices there first.

I was complimented a ton today and it made me feel really great and I am a solid size 10 but putting in some effort, which was the key for me.

@tlcbaby: We started salad club at work a few months ago, so lunches are usually healthy. And we do dinners at home at the table recently. Maybe breakfasts is what I will focus on because I seem to go for the worst stuff at breakfast time.

It is that time of year in Texas where it is dangerously hot outside. But I've got to figure out something! My prenatal yoga instructor is starting a post-natal class finally, so maybe I can start going to that regularly as a jumping off point.

I was going to say something similar. Start with just one meal per day and commit to making healthy choices for that meal. Then you can ease into it a bit and it won't feel so overwhelming.

Are there any activities you can do with your LO or family like Stroller Strides or going for a bike ride? Or even a friend you could walk with and keep each other accountable for keeping your workout date?

It could be fun to search online for healthy recipes you want to make. That always gets me excited!

@highwire: I'm sorry you're feeling in such a awful place right now! When I've hit a wall like this in the past, I started by doing small things like adding more greens and healthy foods. It's easier for me to start with fruits for snacks and move into adding veggies into dinner and adjusting portions

Then you can add physical stuff like walks, exercise, etc. Anything to get moving even just a little helps my confidence a little which improves a LOT of my attitude!

Hope this helps for you! I go through cycles where I'm up and down.. this is usually how I get out of a rut! Taking things easy and not trying to force too much at once (so I don't quit! because I'm such a quitter haha) Good luck!!

I'm very overweight and thus constantly physically uncomfortable, get sick frequently, eat terribly (appetite is out of control with breastfeeding, even if the things I eat aren't always necessarily bad for me), and almost never make time to exercise.

Help me. I'm overwhelmed with getting myself back to health and don't know where to start.
