We did in home care kinda. I have a SAHM friend who watches him. When he started her son was 4. I love it because she works with me for him (such as schedule etc). She treats him as part if the family so he goes shopping with her and to school events etc. he needed special care as a baby. Now at 18 months we started him twice a week at preschool to get some interaction. So the best of both worlds

@winniebee, that's what i'm starting to feel like about a nanny share. Plus it IS still a LOT more expensive than daycare and in-home. and like mamabolt said, they're going to get sick eventually. Get it over with now or deal with it later.

I'm really hoping that once we visit/see these places, that one of them feels right. Because right now it's just hard to feel strongly about anything. I can rationally see the pros and cons but until we're knee deep in the trenches, I'm not sure I can see how it will pan out

We initially wanted daycare but chose a short-term nanny (3 months) because we were in the process of moving. Researched daycares in our area and the ones we liked all had waiting lists or no openings for infants :( so we are doing a nanny share.

I liked the ease of not having to dress baby for the nanny, but didn't like that she's just home with one person all day. I'm pretty excited about the nanny share because LO will get to socialize and our new nanny has nanny friends in the area and they have play dates often. Cost is also a factor. For us, the nanny was the most expensive and the daycares we looked at were comparable with the nanny share. And in terms of flexible schedules a nanny/nanny share may be able to work better with your schedule.

I think there are benefits to all 3, you have to figure out what is most important for you, your DH, your LO and schedules.

We went with daycare (and my mom watches him one day a week). I didn't want to have to deal with someone else's house and schedule and others being in my house with a nanny share. We looked at nanny options, but it was $800 more a month (for just 3 days a week) and it was difficult to find someone qualified to do it just 3 days a week. I also like the reliability factor of daycare - never have to worry about your nanny calling out sick or taking a vacation.

Daycare has been great so far, illnesses aside.

This was posted recently but it was just daycare vs nanny.
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/daycare-or-nanny

I think Daycares are great because I worked in one, I think nannies are awesome because I was one, and in-home daycare is nice too because I'm about to start watching a kiddo or two here at my house now...lol not helpful, but my point being there are many pros and cons to all 3 options and maybe once you take a tour or interview some potential nannies/daycare providers your mind will be made. It's so hard to decide without seeing what each has to offer, definitely suggest a tour and prices now so you have time to think about it.

We did daycare because we liked the structure and reliability - never have to worry about it being suddenly closed due to a sick daycare provider, open for good hours, and mid-range price. The constant sickness is hard but they are going to go through it at one point or another when they start being exposed to more children.

I have gone through this process twice. With DD we decided to go with a daycare facility, mainly because we were new to the whole process and unlike most people were trying to spend equivalent to a house payment (long story). We were very happy with the facility we chose and I feel it was the right choice for our family at the time. When DS came into the picture there wasn't any way we could make the cost of two work for our budget. We looked at a couple of in-home daycares but I didn't like the ratio of kids to adult given that we had a tiny infant. Ultimately we went for a nanny, turned out a friend from church was looking to get started in in-home daycare and was within our price range. So far it has worked out great for all of us, right now she only has my two LO, her 9yo daughter and a 7yo before/after school; it give my kids individual attention but also allows my 2.5yo interaction with other kids when the two older are there.

We choose daycare because I had a friend who had a very bad experience with a nanny. When we picked a daycare we knew exactly what we were getting, with a nanny you never know. We love Brennan's daycare, he does so many fun activities (art, sign language, singing, story time, etc) and he is excelling at his milestones. His teachers are amazing (all are certified teachers with a college degree and trained in CPR) and really love him. The only downside to daycare is the illness though.

So many choices, I know.

What did you go with and why are you happiest with this choice?

We are starting to look into these options and are kind of indifferent towards all of them. I'm hoping one of them just seems like a good fit when the time comes and we visit/meet the people. I'm not sure in-home daycare will have lots of flexibility for us--my husband works a set 6:00-2:30 schedule but mine varies a little more since I have flex time. And I'm not sure they will do a drop off as early as 6:00 or 6:30, whereas the daycares around here are open at 6:00am. So I could work at 6:30 still and she could be picked up at 3:00. I'm just not sure! If we do In-home or a nanny share, I think we'd only do it for a year.

eta: there is also a Kindercare literally right outside our subdivision....but I hear it's very pricey.
