We fell in love with an in home daycare that was up the street from us. We met with the owner in June. Our LO isn't due until November and we wouldn't need to use her until February. However, based on everything we heard, we needed to start looking early. We expressed our interest and kept in touch with her as she didn't do official waiting lists. She said that she wouldn't know if she had any openings until November. Therefore, we had to plan a back up. We met with a day care center that we also liked but it was a 30 min drive round trip instead of a 2 block walk. Still, we put down a 2 week deposit knowing that we would lose it if a space opened up in our preferred location.

Long story short, a space did open up early and we are set to start at our preferred place in Feb. Losing the deposit sucks but that piece of mind was worth it. Especially since i know finding infant care can be tough.

Good luck!

We've started doing facility and home tours of different daycares and family child cares to find out what our options are once we have the twins and I go back to work (April/May 2013). I think we're leaning toward an in-home child care provider, but I'm worried that once it's time for them to start child care, the person we choose won't have an availability. I'm such a Type-A person, I want to know NOW that I have spots secured for our boys.

For those of you who are using an in-home or family child care provider, how did you go about lining up your spot? Did you have a back-up plan in case you didn't get in with your first pick? At what point during pregnancy or after the baby was born did you have child care secured?
