I'm surprised to hear that it's fine to leave the temp in for a while, both my dentist and the root canal specialist told me to not even chew on it and that the crown must be done ASAP or the root canal would be pointless and I could lose the tooth. Are they being way over the top in their reaction, or is it different if there was quite a bit of tooth decay? I threw up every time I brushed my teeth all 9 months of my pregnancy so yeah...it was bad.

I had a root canal done February 2012 and didn't get the crown put on for almost a year. My dentist had originally told me that it had to be done right away, but after I got the root canal from the specialist, he said that the temporary filling that they used would actually hold up for a while. I would put off the crown until the new year if possible.

I'm sorry you are in so much pain from the wisdom tooth. It almost sounds as if you need to look for a new dentist. I would be pissed if my dentist dismissed my pain like that. Tooth pain is horrible!!!

@dookie32: I totally forgot to write that as well-- I think you are fine to keep a temp on for several months. My friend had a temp for YEARS before it finally fell out and he threw it away by accident, then finally got his crown because he didn't have a choice.

@wonderstruck: that is awful. all things dentist are so horrific, and your experience touches on like three or four of them, not to mention crazy bills. I'm so sorry :( My mom has worked in dental practice management since I was a kid, and Wagon Sr. also did for a couple of years, but even with all of that knowledge, dentist issues still really scare me. Especially the pain and the expense!! I am so sorry you are dealing with this :(

I've had a fair amount of root canals done- is there any reason that you have to have the cap put on immediately? I've usually had a few weeks between when they size it and when it acutally gets put on. You wouldn't be able to keep a temp on until your new 2014 insurance kicks in?

I'm so angry and in so much pain right now. A couple of weeks ago I started to have an annoying pain on the right bottom side of my mouth, all the way in the back. I realized it was my wisdom tooth starting to poke through and called my dentist. When I went in they told me that the wisdom tooth wasn't irritated or showing any signs that it was growing in, and that it had probably been like that for some time and I was just now noticing from the pain. They told me that the pain was actually coming from the back top tooth on that side, and that it must just be radiating to the bottom, and that I would need a root canal and cap. They warned me that the cap HAD to be done right after the root canal or I could lose the tooth, and said that if the wisdom teeth did star growing in more I should probably wait until next year to take care of that since I'd be close to my insurance cap w/the root canal and crown.

So I get the root canal done (which was an awful experience) at a specialist's office, since I guess regular dentist's don't do them on the very back teeth and special equipment is necessary. I call my dentist, told them it was done, and made an appointment for the crown...and they called me today to tell me that my insurance is already capped out from the root canal and ask if I still want the crown done because I'll have to pay for it out of pocket. Really, morons?! You already told me that I HAVE to have the cap done, and that it wouldn't max out my insurance! I get that they don't know exactly how much the specialists charge, but they should've told me that so I would have been prepared for this possibility!

And the kicker is that my wisdom tooth is KILLING me. It hurts worse than ever and I'm in agony whenever something touches the gums right where the wisdom tooth is. It has grown in more in the last few days and there is NO WAY that's not where the pain is coming from. So now I'm going to end up paying for a wisdom tooth extraction and a crown of out pocket, plus be in pain way longer than necessary, all because of their screw up.
