@irene: I could echo the 'Please chill out, read my other comments, etc." I already said this may come back to bite me in the ass in a year or two when my baby is older. I still felt kind of bad for the stranger, sorry you're upset by that.

Again, I just find this in a Seinfeld funny way. What happened happened and I was just sharing something funny with me being the villain in the story. Just imagine it as a scene from Seinfeld. Please chill out. Read my other comments in the comments field. I felt bad for the stranger because yes that's what I would have done too before I had a child. But I couldn't change what I felt at that moment. I was just telling the truth.

@catomd00: @wonderstruck: Yes of course I teach him about sharing. All the time. I am not the mom who spoils my child. But allow me one moment of weakness when he hysterically cries.

@wonderstruck: No I did not yell at anyone or anything. I was just frustrated and upset inside of me. That was my feeling. Sorry I feel that way.

@wonderstruck: I think it's mostly parents of toddlers who can relate who are saying that. I agree it's crappy to get mad at someone else when it's your own toddler acting up, but I've had similar issues crop up before with my kids too! Toddlers can be tough.

@mrbee: That's true. I just feel badly for the stranger that they were trying to help and anger thrown their way because of the toddler's temper tantrum. I mean, toddlers have temper tantrums over everything, if not the elevator button I'm sure something else would have happened. I feel like blaming it on someone who was just trying to help is just kind of...well, crappy. I was trying to find a nicer word because I know OP didn't really say anything to the stranger. I guess the general attitude of 'OMG stupid stranger!' that most of the responses have just kind of bothered me.

@catomd00: Yeah sorry OP, but this was my reaction too. If I were the stranger I'd be kinda offended that I was just doing what it sounded like you asked me to do, and then you got pissy with me about it because god forbid your child has to experience the disappointment of not pushing the button every single time they're in an elevator.

I know some will flame me for that opinion, but...there it is. It's what I think. Sorry, ladies (and gents! lol)

I have to disagree with you and many other posters. This should have been used as a teachable moment about sharing or learning to not break down when you don't get your own way, not used as an opportunity to get mad at an innocent stranger who was trying to help.

Haha... sorry fellow moms and toddlers/preschoolers... I always push the button! I'm usually in a rush so sometimes my kids will push the button for fun after I have pushed it. But I don't have enough patience to let it be routine that my kids push the button before anyone else. Plus, there are way too many buttons... I don't want them thinking they are allowed to push the emergency button, the door open button, other floors, etc.

That being said, if I'm getting in an elevator with a family and they make a beeline for the buttons, I don't tackle them over to the side so I can push it first ;)

@Mae: @mamimami: @T-Mom: I have the same question. When LO first discovered the elevator with buttons and wanted to go over and press the emergency buttons, he cried hysterically when I wouldn't let him. Took me a few times to explain to him so he'd understand we couldn't press those buttons. One reason why I wanted to hold him up and let him press the button to our floor was so he could get it out of his system! :) and @T-Mom: I can't wait for him to grow out of the button phase. Dang. Maybe I'll just take the stairs from now on.

@Punky: No there is no unwritten rule ... just young toddler boys (not sure about girls since I don't have one) tend to have a phase where they are very obsessed with pressing buttons. At least my son does! I didn't think about it until yesterday when it happened.

I didn't know there was some unwritten rule about letting kids push elevator buttons. I think I would have been like the stranger and tried to be helpful. Those of you that said you ask kids to push it for you, don't the parents of those kids ever think that's weird?

@mamimami: lol probably for exactly that reason actually. I'm betting elevator design people are more concerned with making sure the buttons are in a place most accessible to anyone and probably expect parents to just keep kids away from the buttons.

I just see it as a funny Seinfeld-like misunderstanding, hopefully I didn't ruin Mr. Kind Stranger's day too badly....!
I try to address my LO by name in situations where strangers might not be clear that I'm talking to my child...issuing commands or asking questions like "do you need to go poo poo?", etc. That last one would be a bit awkward if a stranger thought I was talking to them!
