@Elle_watson: thanks! Yeah, I have read that about progesterone. It's a really fluke thing what I have. I talked to my OB And she agreed that gas pain is really no joke during pregnancy. I have my gas X on hand and will avoid cruciferous vegetables and beans.

@pachamama: The main reason your body makes more gas during pregnancy is because you have much more progesterone, a hormone that relaxes muscles throughout your body, including your digestive tract. These relaxed muscles slow down digestion, which can lead to gas, bloating, burping, and flatulence, and generally create uncomfortable sensations in your gut, especially after a big meal.Start by cutting out foods most likely to cause gas and bloating. if that doesn't give you relief it is something more serious visit a doctor!

@pachamama: I hope it stops as you get further along! It is scary not knowing what will trigger it. For me I do low FODMAP foods especially during periods where I'm more sensitive and I took a lot of gas x in the first trimester! My OB was ok with that, that and zantac were the only things that got me through. 😩

I was having similar issues in my early 20's (not during pregnancy). I eventually figured out that I don't digest grapes very well! I can eat about a 1/2 cup - but anything over that causes my stomach to swell enormously and cause SEVERE pain. Doubled-over, laying-on-the-floor-of-my-new-job-bathroom-crying type pain. It started suddenly and took me a few months to narrow down the trigger.
(I have other food allergies/intolerances and IBS)

Not sure if that is helpful at all, but I wouldn't want you to overlook something simple like grapes in favor of other things.

I hope you figure it out!

I think I actually just had this!

It felt just like my gallbladder attacks, but was on the left. It woke me up Friday night, and I felt awful for hours.

I have a hiatal hernia so I don't know if it was that, or just trapped gas. But it was awful and I've been dying to have a BM ever since

@2littlepumpkins: it's really a rare thing but I've been so scared it will happen again. 5 hours later it is like absolutely nothing happened. It seems like something, food or air, gets stuck -it comes on so sudden- and I can feel it literally move through my torso. It must be gas and, combined with progesterone and maybe weird bowels, it's just killer!

@MaryM: I did look into gallbladder issues actually! But it's only been on my left (like right on my heart) and once it started in my back.

Any chance it could be your gallbladder? I've had attacks get worse when pregnant (until I had it removed)

It would be severe and lasting pain that started around the bottom of my ribs on the right.

Yes, I had this and almost went to the ER one night. My saving grace were these:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Alka-Seltzer-Heartburn-Gas-ReliefChews-Tropical-Punch-Chewable-Tablets-54-ct/36715724

I had to take them about an hour after taking B6 for nausea or they would make me throw-up, but the pain was seriously horrible. I cried so hard one night convinced I was having an ectopic I was in so much pain.

@MaryM: usually about 3 hours.
@MommySLP: what's weird is it happened for the 1st time when I was 34 weeks pregnant which makes total sense, being all cramped up. But I'm only 9.5 weeks. I'm about to go to urgent care but I don't want them telling me it's indigestion. That's not what it feels like it all. It feels like my intestines are fermenting.

@pachamama: I had what sounds like similar symptoms starting at 6 weeks. In fact it got so bad one night I went to the ER. After all tests came back clear they said it was actually likely heartburn. It was extremely painful in my back & front right below my bra line & radiated down. Not what normal heartburn feels like! It would eventually subside. But it was agonizing pain & I could barely move. After it happened 2 more times in my first trimester I started Zantac & have never had it again.

Is it long lasting?

I get sharp gas pains, but they only last a minute or two.

Progesterone can REALLY slow things down. I've had some longer lasting cramps from constipation. But they're more like cramps, not so sharp

This happens to me too and has been worse while pregnant. Gas-X helps me a bit.

ETA: I have IBS so get horrible gas anyway so I can recognize the symptom. I agree that if you aren't sure, could be worth a call.

@pachamama: that happens to me particularly while pregnant and especially with the first trimester symptoms. But honestly it would be worrying if I didn't already know about my GI symptoms. If gas x doesn't help then maybe call in?

I am having very sporadic incapacitating bouts of what I think is gas but is severe to the point of immobility. It starts in my chest or back and Is like waves of pressure that work its way down. To say the least I cannot function or take care of my son. I don't even end up passing gas. I'm on progesterone which might be messing with things I guess? I had a soda but it seems a soda could cause 3 hours if pain.
The pain is hard to describe, it's not heartburn or nausea at all. Can anyone relate?? I don't even know what it could be.
