@Arden: I see that some people shared their positive responses to the article, and others shared their negative responses. That's fair.

If the author feels empowered by her new term and others want to take it on, then that's great. The term does seem like it would more confusing though. If this ends up being my situation and someone asked about it, I'd echo what I've heard my best friend say, "We do a little of everything, and that works for us!"

I posted this because the article was written by a mother who came up with this term for herself. It empowered her, and she felt that it was more positive. That is a beautiful thing.

If you don't want to use it to describe your own journey than you don't have to, but I certainly don't think we should put down a term that some mothers want to embrace. Several moms who originally commented that they loved the term might now feel ashamed to use it because of the negative reaction. :(

I didn't find the least bit of "formula shaming" in the article. It was a celebration of feeding babies.

I think anyone who feeds their baby any amount of breastmilk should just say they are breastfeeding! It makes no difference to me.

@rahlyrah: @californiadreams: Agreed.

I EBF and I think there shouldn't be judgement on either side, period. I don't think saying "inclusively breastfeeding" helps this issue either. It seems as though someone should feel "ashamed" to say that they FF and that makes me sad.

if someone told me they were inclusively breastfeeding, I would have no idea what they meant. I get why the idea seems like a decent one, but at the same time, I can see how it's making it more difficult to just say you supplement.

if someone said they inclusively formula feed, I would also be confused.

Call it whatever you want- but nobody should ever be made to feel ashamed over how they feed their child. I absolutely hate that society makes both feeding types feel so defensive.

One of my sons was supplemented, the other was not- I'm equally proud of how both have thrived.

I think it's fine if you're feeling particularly bad about your situation and need to feel better... but this is me (I breastfeed, pump and feed pumped milk, and also supplement with formula because of low supply)... and I don't feel bad about it. If anything I feel like I'm proud that I'm sticking with breastfeeding and pumping despite it being a total PITA since I have to supplement anyways.

i am with those who don't think it is empowering. I actually EBF and i never felt the need to say i am "exclusively" BFing, and if i had to supplement, i wouldn't feel the need to say "inclusive".

I just say I breast feed if people ask and never think to elaborate. And perhaps if I had to or chose to give formula, I would have said "i breastfeed and give formula". end of story.

I know I'm in the minority, but I don't find it empowering at all. Is formula so shameful that we need to develop a term so that we don't have to say it? I think it is more empowering to take pride in however you nourish your child, whether it be by EBF, EPing, supplementing, or formula feeding. I don't feel the need to sugarcoat my need to supplement so that others don't look down on me. That is empowerment. This, in my opinion, just further encourages formula shaming.

I love this article too... I'm reading this during my nightly pump session to maintain my supply. It sucks having to wake up in the middle of the night to pump but as I look over at my sleeping angel, it's all worth it!

Thanks for sharing this! I had a low supply and had to suppliment at 6 months, by 9 months LO weaned himself off the boob :crying: and was on all formula. It was a bit of an agonizing process, but I'm still proud I gave him all the milk I had!

Personally speaking I have no qualms about saying I have low supply and needed to supplement. It's the truth.

I just wished some would understand that not every body is able to produce what a specific baby needs despite their best efforts. It's a luxury if you do.

I supplemented about a bottle a day, I wohm full time, I pumped for 13 months and nursed for 2 years and I'm damn proud of that.
