Hi Lindsayinny

This seems to be a stress incontinence. Generally, pelvic floor muscles, nerves, ligaments work together and support the urinary bladder, keep the urethra closed. So the urine does not leak out. During pregnancy or childbirth, injury or over stretching in these areas cause them to stop working properly. This is a common problem from pregnancy to postpartum. You better start doing Kegel exercise that would strengthen your pelvic floor. Use sanitary pads to protect your clothes from leakage. Cut down your caffeine intake. As you stated Pelvic therapy is the best source to reduce your problem. This PT helped many women for urinary incontinence issue. First, you try these. If you still have the problem in future, better consult your Gynec and she may refer a urologist if necessary.

@LindsayInNY: agh, where did you find that takes insurance?! (assuming from your name that you're in NYC?) I'm going to my first pelvic floor PT appointment next week and paying out of pocket because I had a HELL of a time finding anywhere that took my insurance (and the two places I did find didn't specialize in it and the co-pay was almost as much as OOP as a specialty place, gah).

I did pelvic floor pt for this issue plus others. It was somewhat helpful but hard to stick with the "homework" exercises. I got a referral from my regular nurse practitioner and it was covered by insurance, I think for a certain number of visits per year or per referral.

@LindsayInNY: I have done pelvic floor PT. I'm going to a clinic that specializes in it, and they are wonderful. What state you live in will likely determine whether you need to be referred or not. I'm in TN now, which is a direct-access state where I don't need a referral.

I actually recently returned for more PT for pelvic pain in my third trimester of another pregnancy, and I'm amazed at how helpful it is on multiple fronts. For the first time in months, I can stand and walk without feeling like I constantly need to pee. It's great!

@peaches1038: I'm seeing the "Co-Director, Voiding Dysfunction, Incontinence and Urodynamic Center" LOL. I don't need a referral so I can make appointments with whoever. I'm going to check those links though and see if I can find someone there. I'm 2 years PP and I fear with a second pregnancy/birth will do to me!

@LindsayInNY: I'm a pelvic floor PT and it's covered just like regular physical therapy. We use the same billing codes. But you can call your insurance just to check and also to see if you have a co-pay or any visit limits. I would recommend a urogynecologist rather than just a urologist, but even your regular OB-GYN can give you an order for pelvic floor PT. Incontinence very common, but it's NOT normal, no matter how old you are. Get it addressed now before it gets worse. Here are some links to help you search for a qualified therapist in your area. Good luck!

@LindsayInNY: I had a uterine prolapse after LO2, and I did some therapy. My therapist unfortunately left the country for a month, cutting my sessions short, but the therapy did help the prolapse. I still have some incontinence issues, but I'm also pregnant with LO3, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. If I recall correctly, our insurance did cover it.

@looch: It was at my in-laws! Luckily they're not close by so it's not like I'm *always* on the trampoline but OMG it just happened while jumping! I was like well, this sucks.

@bushelandapeck: That's the other option... I don't know if it's covered by normal insurance or one of those non-conventional things that they don't cover?

@Banana330: I'm not due to see my ob/gyn for another couple months. If the urologist isn't right, I'm sure she'll point me the right way. But she seems to have a lot of experience in this area.

Has anyone dealt with postpartum treatment for incontinence? Who did you see? I have an appointment with a urologist but wasn't sure if I needed a pelvic PT or what? I think I have stress incontinence - I pee a little with powerful sneezes or coughs, on the trampoline (which I've done all of once but still!) and have to really control it when running.
