Milk in the evening is higher in fat & supply will naturally "dip" to ensure baby gets more hindmilk & less foremilk. It's also hormonal different & has cannabinoids in it to help relax & prepare lo for bedtime, which is why they say when feeding pumped milk you should always feed milk pumped in the evening in the evening & visa versa. The constant suckling is also normal behavior for your lo regardless of supply amount, I had oversupply issues & P still behaved like that at the breast in the afternoon/evening hours..... It's almost like its how the wind down from the day & really has nothing to do with "hunger" per say.

Unless lo is having output or other issues, I wouldn't worry about your supply. :)

I agree, thats just a natural cycle. If you really need to, you could try to pump in the morning and save that milk for afternoon/evening. When I would wake up so full, I would feed her on one side and pump the other. Maybe try that?

I agree with @Brownie. Your supply will diminish throughout the day due to waning hormones, but will come back full force in the a.m. Not a whole lot that can be done about that - it is a natural cycle.

Just wanted to chime in. It is completely normal to havers supply in the evening because you use a lot through the day. Keep drinking water and encourage you baby to be on the breast.

@MusicaV: LO is definitely doing the head twisting thing!

She'll often cry when I put her to the breast and throughout the feed and this only really happens during the evenings when she would usually cluster feed.

I've just baked a batch of lactation cookies and am trying to eat more food and drink more water as I suspect I'm not taking in enough calories to maintain my supply (I've lost another four pounds in the last month!)

I found that ending a good meal and getting some rest when DH got home from work helped.

That being said, are you sure she isn't just using you as a pacifier or playing around on your boob? What do you mean by "fret?" DS went through a phase when he would twist his head and pull off hard with my nipple still in his mouth, then come right back and do it again. I tried squeezing to help him out. Milk squirted out, so I figured it was more him having fun than not getting enough milk. He still pulls off and comes right back, but he's stopped pulling off hard. If he does it enough times, I'll bring him up to burp and try to distract him from his game.

Hi Ladies

Does anybody have any suggestions for increasing my milk supply in the late afternoon and evening?

LO is twelve weeks old and EBF and I seem to be struggling with lower supply in the few hours before bed. LO seems to do a lot of sucking without swallowing and gets quite agitated on the right breast in particular. Baby is still gaining weight and sleeping ok etc but I don't find it very pleasant watching her fret at the breast and I also get sore nipples with all the sucking.

I have oatmeal for breakfast each morning and am drinking lactation tea and lots of water each day on an effort to keep up.

Any suggestions?
