@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: your moms sounds like the best! No clean up afterwards for you. :) I would drive 1.5 hr one way, with kids, for a July 4th BBQ to meet a friend's baby for the first time. :)

@regberadaisy: no, not necessarily barbecue- we don't even own a grille  but more picnic/ cookout style food. I have to consider my food prep helpers with setting a menu. ETA: since it's Fourth of July I imagine people have some preconceived ideas about what they should eat, so I wouldn't want to dissappointment them too much.

If we hosted at our house the party could be indoors and outdoors plus we have a pool people can use to cool off. However, hosting at our house means the party never ends. Our last guests at the Tree Trimming left close to 2 am. My mom's house is another option- she has a pool too and even if guests linger the baby and I could go home at a decent time. DH's local friends live South of us (30-60+ min), so going to my mom's house would be quite a hike for them. She's 45 min North of us already. I'd love to rent the park pavillion near us, which would be most convenient for anyone local, but we will all surely bake.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: does it *have* to be a BBQ? Even then there's no reason why you can't serve a full BBQ at x time. But let people know it's open house style with light beverages and snacks. But a meal will be served at 5pm (or whatever time).

You can still host the people inside/outside!

@Foodnerd81: nope, I don't think you're being a jerk for not wanting to fly somewhere just for a party.

With OOT guests even if they come to visit for a specific event we always seem to entertain ($$$) them for all the days of their stay. I don't forsee inviting or encouraging OOT family or friends to come for a solo trip when it's just me solo parenting all week during my mat leave. Plus DH isn't going to want to come home on the weekends to see his baby and also have a house guest(s). Learning to be a mom and entertaining doesn't sound fun or economical. Then, after mat leave I know I'm going to be selfish with my PTO.

The Sip & See OOT guest list would really be kept to those that have expressed interest in meeting the baby- my BFFs that flew in for my Tree Trimming party (b/c they wanted to see me in person with a bump :silly: ) our OOT family (baby's grands, aunt's & uncles), and my aunt. The rest of the Sip & See invited guests would be local, but again sticking with besties and people that have been supportive during my pregnancy. Anyone else I send out announcements to wouldn't get a STD and that list is pretty small- favorite cousins, our Godparents, and really good family friends.

All that to say, a declined invite would not hurt my feelings.

@Foodnerd81: same here. Unless it's family, I wouldn't fly in for a sip n see.

But I think in general, it's nice to provide a full meal.

I'd want Sunday for travel purposes. No strong opinion on food options. BUT, I also probably wouldn't fly in just for a sip and see- if it was a super close friend I would make a separate trip probably at some point, but I wouldn't see the point of flying in just for a group get together when I probably wouldn't get to talk to my friend or the baby one on one anyway. Anyone less than a best friend I wouldn't fly in for in general. But maybe I'm a jerk.

Thanks for the votes and comments.

I don't mind feeding people and have a couple people that can help with food prep and party prep. But I will have to give this some more thought since an outdoor, daytime event will be so freaking hot.

If you're not planning for it to be a full-blown Fourth of July BBQ (or if someone else typically hosts a Fourth of July party), I'd plan around whatever other festivities are going on. And I'd plan lighter fare, because at 3 months, you're probably still not going to want to go all out preparing for a BBQ!

I'd vote Sunday with a full BBQ. That makes it easier for anyone who needs/wants to fly in on Sat instead of Fri night.

Saturday or Sunday with a full BBQ. If I'm spending the money to fly in to meet your baby, there better be more than chips and crackers! ;)

Fourth of July falls on Monday this year and baby will be roughly 3 months old. Many people will have a three day weekend- Sat/ Sun/ Mon. If you were FLYING to attend a Fourth of July party (Sip & See), which day would you want the party to be?

Would you want a full on barbecue or would an open house with lighter fare work?

* I'm going to send out birth announcements with STD for the Sip & See. DH has business trips all May & June, so I'd like for any fly-in guests, especially, to wait for a visit until he's back home FT.
