We send our son to a preschool that doesn't have day care, the earliest you could enroll your kid is at age 2, and it's for 2 days a week for a few hours.

As the kids get older though, they've started to change the programming to make the school day longer and add before and after care. The problem though, is that a full day there is quite expensive, so if we needed more care, this place wouldn't have been an option for us.

I know of one other family that has full time working parents, they use a nanny. We use grandma-care.

This is my biggest fear, the closest preschool has 2-3 day programs for half days, and we are lucky that our daycare provider will do drop off/pick up for us, however I don't know if this preschool would be my first choice (but it's the only one she offers the service too.) We still have one year, but I'm so sad that we might have to transition her to a school based daycare instead of the place that is her second home with people she loves.

@LuLu Mom: there are 3 or 4 different preschools in our town that seem to have great programs, BUT, like mentioned, it's only part of the day, then don't offer additional hours and it's expensive. The daycare we are in now has a preschool and pre-k program, and with two working parents that seems to make the most sense for us. The preschools make more sense for SAH or WAH families I think.

LO starts an independent pre-school in September but it's full-time, they don't have part-time options (going 2-3 days a week). It's 5 days a week for all students. They have early bird and after school programs for parents like us who work full-time.

we do a preschool/daycare, so hours are longer and it's all year round and costs were less than other less hours preschools.

We couldn't make it work because I'm a FT student and DH is a FT working dad, so we had no way to get him from preschool to daycare. We are keeping him at an in home, which fortunately means postponing preschool for a year. But there are far fewer places that have combined daycare/preschool here, they're signicsntly more expensive, and we still feel like J needs the laid back environment of an in home for now.

The biggest drawback is shorter day and not 5 days a week. Impossible for ft woh parents.

In our area, it seems to be most common to have a daycare/preschool combo where they are intertwined. We currently attend an in home that we love and do not want to pull our almost 3 year old. There are a few options for independent preschools that she would go for a couple hours 2-3 times a week. How do you feel about this, do you have any pros & cons to a combined daycare/school vs just a school setting?
