Thanks everyone!

I ended up trying the Chicken Tikka Masala and naan bread and it was DELICIOUS! For an app, we tried the veggie pakoras which were just "meh." However, the Gulab Jamun dessert was AMAZING.

Thanks for all the tips! We will definitely be going back so I can try more of these recommendations. :)

Naan! Lots and lots of naan!

We love vindaloo (lamb, chicken or shrimp), tiki masala and my favorite is a veggie dish: shahi paneer.

@rahlyrah: are they North Indian or South Indian restaurants?

Along with the pp's, I'd suggest butter chicken (chicken makhani sometimes on the menu), chicken tikka masala (a British invention), or Malai Kofta. If you like spinach you'll like Saag Paneer (the creamy spinach one you were asking about). If there's an indo-Chinese section of the menu, I really like chili chicken. Biryani is always a safe choice, because its basically Indian fried rice, with whatever meat you want in it.

Definitely get naan on the side, get a couple of veggie samosas, and for dessert, get gulab jamun--- it's so good! It's kind of like a donut hole drenched in a warm, sugary-cardamom syrup.

If you want an Indian drink, I really like mango lassis, chai tea, or falooda (a yummy drink made with rosewater, milk or ice cream, cooked vermicelli noodles chopped, and jellies or tapioca pearls. Sounds gross but is delicious and pink).

If they are South Indian, you can't go wrong with a dhosa with any filling (its like a savory, crisp crepe with a variety of fillings) and some vada as an appetizer.

A pic of vada! It's like a savory donut made of chickpea flour, that you dip in yummy sauces.

I LOVE Indian food. Do you like lamb? Lamb dishes in Indian food are very different than lamb chops, which are often dry. In Indian food, the meat is very tender. I like lamb jalfrazi or lamb rhogan josh. Both of those dishes are meat with sauce. You can ask for the dishes to be mild in spice. If you aren't into saucy dishes, you can have tandoori. It's a delicious way that they roast various meats with a yogurt sauce. Order naan bread. If you like something vegetarian, alu gobi is nice (cauliflower, peas and potatoes).

Tikka Masala is what I always recommend to those trying Indian for the first time. I also love Saag Paneer and Malai Kofta. For your DH, lamb vindaloo is spicy and delicious. And you must get naan. Garlic naan is so darn good!

You cannot go wrong with butter chicken or lamb korma! Both are sweet dishes with very mild, if any, spice but so full of lovely flavours! I love Indian food but can't do spicy hot as I have zero tolerance, but those two dishes are my absolute fave.

Also, so glad to hear you're giving it another go! So many people try a food once and if they don't like it, automatically assume all food from that cuisine is gross, so well done you for giving it another go!

My favourite is chicken jalfrezi and DH's is chicken tikka masala. If you don't want too spicy, but still plenty of flavour a bhuna, balti and dhansak are good! As far as sides go, okra and Bombay potatoes are amazing.

I love Indian food :)

I've only tried Indian food once before and didn't like it. I'm not a huge fan of curry and thought everything was too hot to have any flavor. That being said, it was at a cheap buffet and I had no clue what I was putting on my plate. So, I'm assuming it was user (eater?) error and want to give it another try. There are a few highly rated Indian places near our house and we're thinking of going tonight or tomorrow. Problem is, I have no idea what to order! Any recommendations for two (mostly) Indian food virgins? We are both meat eaters and DH loves spicy. Me, not so much, but they let you choose a 1-10 spiciness level.
