@Pancakes: Fennel supposedly alters level of estrogen and can induce labor - I googled really quick and found this website which explains pretty well: http://www.livestrong.com/article/490412-fennel-tea-pregnancy/.

@raspberries: Why can't you have fennel while pregnant? I have never heard of that.

I don't see what there could be in indian food that is off-limits...

You don't need to avoid fennel unless you're just eating bottles of it for fun I imagine. The amount if food amounts to practically nothing. When they say avoid it, I think they mean supplements or large amounts.

During my first trimester when everything was making me gag, homemade palak paneer and red-lentil dal were two of the very few dishes I could reliably stomach to get some real food down. Indian food is the best.

@raspberries: it's possible the paneer is made with unpasteurized milk- doubtful, but my sister asked at our local indian place and they weren't positive, so she avoided it. But really it's cooked anyway...

I love indian food but absolutely could not stomach it while pregnant. Even Dh having it out and coming home smelling like it made me nauseous. Took a few months after birth for me to get over it, too. You are lucky!

I think everything is safe! Even the items with fennel in them have such a small amount, that it's not going to lead to anything! I mean, Indian women eat Indian food throughout their entire pregnancies, right?

Now I'm craving some!

@raspberries: I think in general you are safe to eat anything. That said, my water broke a few hours after eating an eggplant-based Indian dish (at 39+ weeks!). Probably just a coincidence though.

I guess I was more concerned about ingredients that may be in Indian food that aren't in my regular diet. I know a few dishes are made with fennel, and you're not supposed to have that when pregnant - is there anything else like that I should be avoiding but don't know about?

I'll probaaaably just assume that whatever's in it will be a low enough quantity that it shouldn't affect anything - chicken vindaloo, here I come!

Are there any particular foods that are common at Indian restaurants to avoid when pregnant?

My coworkers are going out for lunch today to celebrate someone's last day, and we're going to an Indian buffet. I'm not very picky, and I like spicy food, so I usually just eat whatever's there, but it occurred to me that maybe I should be a little more careful now that I'm KU!
