I wouldn't, because I think it is an eyesore, and like others have said, the novelty will wear off and it might not get used as much as you think it will. We have a fancy backyard playset, and the kids use it, but not as much as I hoped they would. The good thing about backyard sets is you can easily remove them when you don't want them anymore. A slide inside my house seems like something that would be harder to get rid of one day.

I personally would not because either way it's just an eyesore to me :silly: I would just fully turn it into a kids nook and in the future a cozy reading nook or something!

They built a slide in one of my company’s offices. It took forever, the project was poorly managed, and when it was done there was too much friction and no one could slide down the slide. Huge fail.

*I* would use a slide, especially if it was just as convenient as the stairs! I like the idea for climbing holds too, as a challenging way to get back up to the slide.

I would put climbing holds up the wall to the railing and a rope ladder or something similar next to it. Something a little more more challenging and asthetically pleasing while still being fun for everyone. We have an indoor swing and my kids love it but are pretty on and off with it. They would love more stuff to climb.

Heck yes! I would totally do something like this if we could. 😁 It'd be cool to have on rainy days and winter when the kiddos are inside. Although I would lean more towards a semi hidden design as @muffinsmuffins mentions. As long as it can be safely detached without damage to the house in the event of resale or once everyone outgrows it.

Friends of ours did this but it’s from the main floor playroom to the basement so out of sight.. They have a tiny locked door in their playroom so it can easily be closed up and you wouldn’t know they have it. It’s definitely cool but kind of a pain as the kids have to go up a lot of stairs to go again and the young kids needs to be supervised doing that. The kids were also a little scared of the closed in slide at first and not being able to see where the exit is...my son won’t go down it ha! And basically her hubby worked super hard on it and the novelty wore off very quickly. It’s out of sight so I don’t think they care but I think if it was in a main area, I would get sick of looking at it especially if the kids never used it. I think they likely use it more when they have people over.

I personally wouldn't do it- we have two slides outside and my kids rarely use them. They aren't exactly "open ended"- the kids go down once or twice, but mostly spend time doing other stuff. I'd find it pretty annoying to have something that big in what seems like a pretty main part of the house.
I think my kids would be excited and use it a lot at first and then i would just be tired of looking at it. I mean- they'd use it instead of the stairs, but once the novelty wears off I don't really think they'd "play" on it, if that makes sense.
An indoor swing, on the other hand, is something I"d consider. Particularly if I could take it down and put it up when I wanted to.

ETA: And if I was looking to buy a house that had one installed I would just be trying to figure out how much work it would be to remove it.

@Hypatia: personally I wouldnt do it, kids get bored of things really quickly and might not use it as much to even make it worth it.

I think it would be really fun! you should be able to find a how to video on removing the balusters, and if you have to have one replaced when you take the slide out later, Sherwin Williams is AMAZING at matching stains!

The only concern I have is how far away is the stairs up to the loft area? Because the kids will be on a constant loop from the bottom of the slide to the stairs (a concern because the constant lapping through certain areas of the house would drive me batty). If it would save you from buggy heat, I would absolutely do it. It's not like you can't take it down when/if you decide to sell and put everything back to normal again.

I think they're neat outside but I wouldn't do one inside the house. You have to worry about resale value-people with young children wouldn't want one for fear of safety and people without kids wouldn't want one-very niche market for sure. And I think the novelty would wear off quickly and it probably wouldn't get used much.

This is definitely a "someday" project that won't happen soon, but I wondered what you guys thought of it.

We have a kitchen where everything (cabinets, island, fridge, etc) is under a normal ceiling. Then there's a breakfast area where the ceiling opens up so you can see into the top floor/loft.

We don't use the area of the kitchen that is open to the second floor. We already have an island big enough for three stools, and the dining room is adjacent with a table for eight, so adding a breakfast table seems redundant. We're talking about eventually putting a play kitchen and a kid table there, but there will still be space unused.

We're thinking about installing a slide from the loft down into the kitchen. The only difficult part would be removing the wood spokes to make room for the.slide mount without damaging the wood spokes in case we take out the slide later (the wood is stained so I'm afraid it'd be hard to get an exact match if we tried to replicate them). The slide is about $500, so not cheap, but not unthinkable. It supports up to 250 lbs, so it'll be used a long time. We live in an area where it's super hot and buggy during the summer, so this would give our kids more options for indoor play.

If you had the budget and logistics to allow it, would you do it? Is there anything I'm overlooking? Aside from the fact that it's kind of gaudy. :silly: I’d love to have an aluminum spiral slide like the picture below, but I haven’t been able to find one below $1k.

I'm attaching a picture of the slide attached to a deck to give an idea of how it would work.
