I would wait until my due date if I were you but I would be open to induction after that.

I wish I had asked for an induction when I was in 5 days of miserable "false labor" with LO. She was eventually born at 41 weeks but I had a C section since she was in distress and I developed an infection. There was meconium when my water broke - I think she was not enjoying the days and days of contractions anymore than me. So, I will not be scared of induction next time (even though some say to not induce when you want to VBAC).

I had a kind of similar situation...
Lo#1 was 9#7oz and ended in c section because he was OP.
With #2, I wanted a vbac so my Dr decided to induce me at 40+2 weeks to hopefully avoid another cs... I went into labor on my own at 40+1 and I went in at 40+2 and he broke my water. Baby was 9#8oz....

Had my 38w check up this morning... head is further down but no other progress. I'll go back next Wednesday to see if anything has progressed and then we'll talk induction. At that point I'll be 39w3d and she said we'd do a membrane sweep if things look favorable. I'm leaning towards an induction date after my due date at this point since I feel great and am not in that miserable stage yet.

Thanks again to everyone for chiming in!!!

@lemondrop: What a tough break! That would def stress me out to have it scheduled then keep getting it pushed back!

@Nutella: @MrsMccarthy: @Tidybee: Thanks for chiming in... I'm typically a "group decision maker" so it's nice to hear other thoughts. Thank you!

@regberadaisy: You're so sweet - thank you for the encouragement! Part of me thinks having an induction date would be nice just to make him show up before it gets here  Thank you for sharing!

@snowjewelz: Adding extra time is what has me cautious about the induction. Good to hear your Pitocin contractions weren't so bad though!

@josina: What a great birth story! I'm hoping mine goes that well too!

@birdofafeather: Yes, so close!!! Hopefully he comes on his own and my decisions don't matter too much!

@Ms.Badger: I'm beginning to think this may be our approach... just schedule something after the due date and see what happens. Always nice to hear the 2nd time around is easier! Thanks for sharing!

I did not read through the responses but my situation was similar so I wanted to share.

My first was 5 days early and 8 lb 15 oz, no gestational diabetes.

With my second, I was having ultrasounds about every 4 weeks to monitor a potential kidney issue and due to my history, so I had growth estimates all along. LO2 was measuring big, but my belly did not measure big. I did not have gestational diabetes. At the 38 wk scan LO2 was about 90%ile big, but not so big that the doctor encouraged induction. At my 39 wk appointment, I scheduled induction for the day after my due date.

I went into labor naturally 2 days before my due date. My baby was big, 9 lb 5 oz, so very similar to the growth scan at 38 wk percentile wise.

But labor was so much easier the second time. First labor was like 18 hrs with 2 hrs of pushing and a necessary episiotomy, my second was 7 hours, with 2 pushes and very minimal tearing, no stitches. I have no regrets about waiting until after my due date to schedule the induction and I think I would have been happy to have induced if I hadn't gone into labor naturally.

Good luck with your decision and with labor!

I personally would wait unless there was a medical reason to induce. I think you're in a great position even if DS is bigger because you already birthed a big baby! Giving your body another week to progress on its own or make you more favorable for an induction seems like a good idea! You're so close to the finish line either way though! Woo!

I didn't vote, since the decision is up to you, but I was induced at 39 weeks and it went perfectly.
My dr. recommended it because I had been 3 cm dilated since 36 weeks (and she wanted to be the one to deliver). We also factored in weather concerns since it was winter and we had an hour drive.
She did sweep my membranes the day before and I was having contractions, but couldn't really feel them. The morning of they were about 5 minutes apart so I feel like I would've gone that day regardless.
They started the epidural at 8, broke my water at 10:30, contractions didn't hurt until after that, around 11 and I got the epidural. Baby was born at 2:30 after 3 rounds of pushes and the vacuum to help.
It was a great experience, but I don't have natural-labor to compare it to, and I was 'ready' since I had been dilated for so long.
Do whatever you're comfortable with!

Personally, I'd wait. I had an induction due to GD, and I never felt the bad pitocin contractions; I was on epidural at the same time. My experience with induction wasn't bad, but it just took sooo long that if I could, I'd rather wait.

@CarrieLouWho: the second time around my milk came in a day earlier. We supplemented a bit on the first day but probably would've regardless. We've been EBF since and dd2 just turned one. My recovery was just about the same as #1. I would say there was more spotty bleeding longer but that's to be expected with a toddler at home as well! ;) I tore about the same Bc she had a huge melon but didn't feel it at all, probably due to adrenaline despite no epi. ;)

Do what feels right to you and your doctors recommendations. No one knows you pregnancy and comfort level like you and your OB! (((Hugs))) I'm sure it will be all great at the end. P.S. I had a scheduled due date induction with #1 and she came two days early by herself. I was hoping the same would happen with #2 but clearly she needed a little nudge. ;)

Id wait. My docs basically gave me the same option. I decided to wait but I was really anticipating getting induced because I wasn't progressing each week. But my doctors all said I wouldn't progress until I was in active labor. My water ended up breaking on my due date but I needed pitocin to start my labor and I didn't think the contractions were that bad. I had a much easier L&d with dd2 despite the fact that she was 2 pounds bigger.

I'd wait. I had a much better experience birthing my daughter spontaneously than I did with my sons induction. And you have a proven pelvis. Also the babies weight is not a concern so much as the head or shoulder size. Fat is soft and some babies are just long. Go with your instinct but to me it's your doctors reasoning doesn't seem to hold a lot of water.

I had a similar choice due to baby size and high bp and weighed all the concerns, and decided to have my kid get the f out! I was miserable, my ob was fine with it, so I went for it. I see no point in waiting it out if you feel like total crap. Unfortunately my hospital hit their highest patient load that week while changing to a computerized system, so I kept getting pushed back :bummed:

So I walked and walked and walked. I was really sick on my due date, so I went to get checked and went into labor during the NST.

@mrsrugbee: Thanks for sharing... I'm trying to read through it all... lots of info to digest!

@regberadaisy: Thanks for the positive story! If we induce, I hope it goes as well for us!

@T.H.O.U.: you're right on track with part of my thoughts... it's really only a week. It would be great if it just happened and this was all for naught!

@simplyfelicity: Ugh... that sounds miserable. Thanks for sharing your experience!

@Mrs.KMM: I'm hoping that labor just starts and all this worry is a non-issue!

@Mae: Your experience is kind of my worry... that things will stall, my supply will suffer, etc. Thanks for sharing!

@babynumber1: We can wait together

@catomd00: I know, that's how I generally think too, but now the Dr is in my head and I'm a little worried she may be right that he will be big. Sigh... so much unknown!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Were you induced with #1 or #2? I've heard that makes a difference, but clearly I don't have the experience to know. Thanks for sharing!

I'd wait only because I've been induced once and gone into labor naturally once and the difference in physical pain level, rest between contractions, milk coming in, and recovery is IMMENSE. I would never want to be induced again after experiencing a natural childbirth, even if I was 41 weeks pregnant!

Possibility of a larger baby wouldn't warrant an induction for me personally. There's no triable way to tell what baby's size is and I firmly believe that the majority of the time our bodies can handle birthing the baby we grew.

I would definitely wait. Seems like your body works wonderfully at getting babies out on schedule and pretty quickly! And I don't know that it would work as well if you got induced. I was forced into an induction (bp issues) and labored 18 hours before ending in an emergency c-section. LO was sunny side up, tilted, and stuck in my pelvis. She was never coming out on her own having descended that way. (And my milk didn't come in for 6 days, I always had a horribly low supply, we totally failed at BF, etc).

Obviously I'll never know what would've happened the other way, but I'll always wonder if I'd have been allowed for her to come naturally rather than force her if she would have come down better and if I'd have been able to birth her naturally and breastfeed. I feel like neither she nor I (my body anyways) were ready for labor.

I mean basically you're looking at an induction either in week 39 or week 40. It sounds like you and your dr agree they don't want you going past that right? I would just look at the schedule in those two weeks and find a date that looks good for you and your doctor. Maybe not right at 39w0d but maybe not at 40w6d either.

I would not induce just because there's a chance that I might be having a big baby. You've already proven that your body can push out a pretty good sized baby and there is absolutely zero guarantee this child will even be as big as your first.

I would not induce...I was a favorable candidate at 3cm and 60% thinned out and was still in labor for 32 hours and it was awful. I would absolutely wait of given the opportunity to do it again but I know each experience is different.

FWIW, we waited till 39 weeks to make the final decision. We ended up scheduling an induction at exactly 40 weeks. I was bloated, hot as hell, miserable and in terrible hip pain I could barely walk or sleep. I was done and my OB was totally on board. So everyone else can suck it.
My baby's size was right on track and she was just slightly bigger than big sister who came on her own two days early.
My OB broke my water just shortly after they started pitocin. I barely got any pit in me before contractions started. I wasn't even fully admitted yet and there was no time for an epidural! We got to the hospital right after 9am and she arrived at 11:35am! She was perfect and healthy and just turned one. :) it was sooooo much easier than my first vaginal delivery!

Eta: I struggled with the same questions as you. I was dilated and effaced but pretty much stalled at the same spot for almost 3 weeks. I think my body was ready but needed a kickstart. I asked my OB quite a few times and if she was uncomfortable at all about it for health / medical reasons I would've wait. My OB office doesn't like you to go past 41 weeks any so an induction would've scheduled for 41 weeks regardless.

@oliviaoblivia: it's always hard to look back. I'm sure you did what was right!
@sapphire: I agree, definitely doesn't warrant medical necessity. I think that's why I'm struggling with it.
@coopsmama: let's hope he shows up ahead of time! That would be great! Your midwife is right, you never have the same baby twice.
@Me3: I think this is my big fear... We wait and he doesn't show up and I still have it be induced and he's gigantic. 10lbs just sounds scary...

I think this article summarises the data on inductions for big babies perfectly. In your position, I would wait.

I delivered my second boy, a 10 lb baby, in January at 40+3. If I had it to do all over again, I would get induced early! Pushing out and recovering from a 10 lb baby is no joke.

I would definitely not induce in this situation, especially as you don't have a history of going late so I think there's a good chance baby will be born ahead of schedule or at least by due date.

I had an induction at 42 weeks with my second and she was about a half pound smaller than my first who was only a couple days late. The induction went smoothly but I believe that's because my body was totally ready -- I was at 4cm dilated when they started the pitocin! I would not induce until you reach your due date. Pitocin contractions are no joke and it's best to wait it out as long as possible unless there is a health reason not to, and at this point, I don't think there really is. Each child is different weight wise and even so you already delivered a big baby and as my midwife says, "you never have to deliver your first (vaginal) baby again." It's SO much easier the second go around.

I think inducing is asking for trouble. 10lbs us not that big in the big scheme of things esp because you have a proven pelvis. Second time deliveries are usually easier. This doesn't seem like a good medical reason for induction.

@CarrieLouWho: I opted for a rcs because I was worried I would go late, she'd be bigger, and if end up with another section anyway. She was born at 39w4d and was 1.5 lbs smaller than my first. She was longer and had a 99% head so I'm glad I didn't push for vaginal but I worry we took her out too soon.
