@Beebeeholiday: I definitely have "white coat" hypertension. It is always higher at the doc office (probably because I'm nervous about what the readings will be)

Other high readings happened when I was sick (with the flu)

@DillonLion: interesting. My blood pressure was around 160/100 when i was induced,
And 145ish/90 my entire second pregnancy (for which I was medicated).

Do you notice any correlation with what sets off the random spikes?

I was induced at 38.5 for high blood pressure. Second baby. Induction was a DREAM! I loved it. If I ever have another baby, I will beg for an induction!

This had no impact whatsoever on breastfeeding. I had problems with my first (slow weight gain, tongue tie) and nursed to 28 mos (through my 2nd pregnancy and beyond) with her.

My second (induced baby) had no problems nursing at all. Gained weight like a champ. I weaned him at 19 mos because I was just soooo done (had been pregnant or nursing or both for almost 5 years at that point!).

Good luck mama!!

@Beebeeholiday: one weekend, the top number was in the 150s

Otherwise is has been 130s or below. This week most of them have been 100-110, so normal range.

Bottom numbers are always like 60-80 I think

My water broke at 37 weeks and has to be induced because I didn't start laboring. My daughter was small and slightly jaundice but ultimately fine! We had of lot of nursing issues (tongue and lip tie) which lead to me EF which was annoying and stressful AF but I'm not sure that had anything to due with being a 37 weeker. She is a very healthy, happy 4 year old now!

Hi! I have a lot to say about this, as I was induced with pre-eclampsia with my first, after being on blood pressure medication almost my whole pregnancy and bed rest for half of it. At 40 weeks my BP spiked even higher and I went preeclamptic, so I was induced. Baby was healthy.

With my second pregnancy, my BP spiked again and I was on BP medication from about 14 weeks onward. However, I never needed to be on bed rest and I went into labor naturally at 38 weeks.

With my third, magically, my BP never got high enough to need medication. however, baby was measuring exceedingly big (both on ultrasound and fundal height). My OB actually had me follow the the GD diet from 30 weeks onward (despite passing, TWICE), because baby was measuring so large and she was concerned about shoulder dystosia. I went in for regular ultrasounds to monitor her growth and my health and my doctor even said her abdomen was measuring in the 99% percentile (aka chubby).

I ended up going into labor naturally at 37+2 and my baby was BARELY seven pounds. She was a peanut and my skinniest kid ever.

I say all this because ultrasound size estimations are notoriously unreliable and I would NOT be comfortable inducing based on size estimates alone. Especially after all I went through (and when I think about all the carbs I missed out on! :-P ) However, high BP is a serious condition and if it’s been regularly high and your doc is concerned for your health and baby’s health, that would be enough for me to feel comfortable inducing that early.

How high has your BP been, if you don’t mind me asking?

@DillonLion: I think 37 weeks is early also. I don’t want to be alarmist but I’m really struggling with the what-ifs of my recent induction (see my earlier posts back in May....)

I was recently induced with my second baby. She was between 38-39 weeks (due date was in question due to discrepancy between early ultrasound and my LMP). I had been diagnosed with chronic hypertension which was successfully treated with meds and I had no signs of preeclampsia . But my OB wanted to induce and I was tired of being pregnant so I agreed.

My labor was very fast and I almost had a c-section due to the baby being in distress and her heart rate decelerating. I ended up delivering in the OR with a vacuum assist. It was really intense.

Baby needed oxygen at birth. She had some episodes of respiratory issues and ended up in the NICU for 5 days for that as well as with jaundice. She was also a peanut at 6lbs

She is now recently diagnosed with an congenital airway disorder. It seems many of her issues would’ve occurred regardless of being induced or not

But I will always be questioning what if she had developed a bit further in utero - would it have made a difference with how she is now responding to these health problems.

I will say that breastfeeding is much much easier the 2nd time around. Is there anything that would help you to prepare for BF? Having a lactation consultation, or other breast feeding support

I wish you lots of luck with whatever you decide! It’s so hard.

@DillonLion: I totally understand your apprehension about being induced at 37 weeks. It would take a lot for doctors to convince me to force my baby out 3 weeks early. And inductions when baby is not ready can be very tough.. but this being your second could be a lot easier! All that being said, 3 weeks isn't very early and most babies do extremely well. I had my son spontaneous pPROM at 36w4 and he did great, even only being 5lb12oz. DS2 was induced at 40w2 and honest to God developmentally they are exactly the same, breastfeeding equally easy. BP is kind of no joke so I would say it's a good idea to trust your doctors -- after a SERIOUS brain picking 😊

I was induced at 38 weeks for a combo of things including high blood pressure and extreme itching. I was already at 4cm, so very favorable for them to just break my water. My labor was 5 hours from that point and E took to nursing right away.

Not quite the same but my Lo2 came at 37 weeks naturally. The doctors considered it full term when I asked if he was considered early. My milk came in much better than my first LO. (They are 3.5 years apart)

The only thing was he had jaundice but I’m Asian and all my babies had jaundice no matter how they came (induced into csec at 41 weeks, natural med free at 37 weeks, induced vaginal delivery again at 41weeks). To circumvent a long hospital stay for jaundice, we supplemented with formula immediately starting with our second but went back to EBF once he was in clear and nursed til 16 months.

I was induced w lo1 at 37 weeks because of low amniotic fluid, but she was totally healthy! It was a long labor and she was a peanut (5lbs 13 oz) but healthy. I did have some problems w nursing but not until she was about 2 months (after a bout of mastitis) but I combo-fed and she ended up nursing til 21 months 🤷‍♀️She’s 5 now and has been very healthy (knock on all the wood...)

Hey mama, my situation was a little bit different but my twins were induced at 37 weeks and they did great. They were 6lb3oz and 4lb15oz. We were surprised Baby B was so small but she was a trooper. I was so worried about an induction and especially the increased risk of NICU and c-section but everything went really smoothly. They did have to monitor my peanut’s blood sugar due to her size but both babies roomed with me for our entire hospital stay. We all came home together on schedule.

They were very sleepy when they were born, and they were not nursing enough to keep up their weight. So I had to triple feed for a few weeks: Nurse til they fell asleep, bottle feed to top them off, pump to maintain my supply. We did need to use a little bit of formula for the bottles at first but it only lasted 4-5 days. We only used one free sample pack of ready made formula across both babies before I was pumping enough to keep up with their bottles. (All the pumping resulted in an oversupply and at my peak I had 950oz in the freezer 🙀)

They will be 11mo on Friday. At their 9mo checkup they were 44th and ~60th percentiles for weight — Baby B remains a pound lighter — and doing great. And they are both excellent nursers except that Baby A gets distracted and bites me more than I think is reasonable.

Good luck!

ETA: These was my second delivery / babies #2 and #3 for me. My first baby was a complication-free vaginal delivery so I was told that I was a good candidate for a successful induction.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this! I don’t have any advice but my sister was induced at 37 weeks due to high blood pressure and everything went great. It was her first baby so she wasn’t dilated at all and had a pretty long but smooth delivery. Her baby was totally healthy and had no issues breastfeeding.

How far along are you? I'd ask them what their blood pressure cutoff was and when they'd pick the induction date. I'd also ask if you could do nonstress tests or regular blood pressure monitoring until 39 weeks

FWIW, I hemorrhaged after a spontaneous, precipitous (super fast) delivery with my first at 39+0. My hospital's policy is that we couldn't induce before 39 weeks unless I had one of several factors, but it was strongly recommended to induce as soon as possible after 39 weeks. I didn't make my induction date, but the advice my midwives and OBs gave me was that once you have one vaginal birth, it's unlikely to have a C-section with an induction and to have them check your Bishop score before setting your induction date. If it's favorable, you'll likely avoid a CS. My Bishop score was super favorable at my 38 week check and I went into labor that night. I had an easy birth and no problems feeding. My 14 month old nurses like a champ.

My OB office said they want to induce at 37 weeks because of on-again-off-again high BP and baby measuring very large (u/s and fundal height).

This is my 2nd baby. First pregnancy had pre eclampsia but not until the very end. I was induced at 40 wks 4 days and had her vaginally the following day. She was 7lb 10oz. I had a mild hemmhorage after.

I'm conflicted. A large baby isn't reason enough to induce, but I guess the combo of big baby/high-ish BP is enough to recommend it.

37 weeks just feels mega early to me. Breastfeeding was a horrendous nightmare last time and I really want it to go better this time. I worry a 37 weeker and an induction will make breastfeeding a challenge at the beginning.

I also worry about him not being fully developed and my body not being ready for labor and needing a c section. Which will be another thing potentially messing with breastfeeding.

I have another appt Thursday and plan to voice my concerns, but they are the doctors/experts so I will defer to their recommendations. Just wondering your thoughts or if you had any good sources of information I could read (not just a random Google search)
