As an aside - you may have some skin 'staining' afterwards. I had this all over my body, but it faded in a month or two. It wasn't scarring, more like a weird skin discoloration.

Have you looked into lotions with calendula oil? Mixing with coconut oil or just a lotion with it. I had a bad rash while pregnant and this helped.

I think if I were you I definitely ask my OB at my next appointment. There's no harm in asking! S/he can perform a cervix check and see if it's favorable for an induction. If you've progressed it'll make an induction easier. If you haven't I might consider a membrane sweep to move things along. Your. OB I think is the best source of the potential, if any, risks of an induction to you and your baby.

I had a scheduled induction with my second at 40 weeks. I was 3cm and 40% effaced. It went very smoothly!

I had PUPPS as well! It was so miserable!!! That's the main reason I wanted my son to come, not because I was huge and sore, but because I was so damn itchy!

I got a cream (Triamcinolone) that helped a little. It made the worst of the worst parts go away. I'll admit I used way more than I was supposed to (it said use up to 4 times a day and I used it like 8-10 times a day, but it helped so I didn't care). I remember when they tested me for cholistasis I wanted it to be that just to be induced (until I found out why it can be so bad!). It was awful! (And one big reservation of getting pregnant again)

I don't think it would be bad to be induced at 39 weeks, and I would totally ask. My midwives would not induce me. I know it was best for my little man, and I ended up going into labor at 39w5d but I wanted it to end so bad so I know where you are coming from!!

Mine did take about 2-3 weeks to go away post partum. Like @Chuckles: I was so bummed it wasn't gone right away. But the intensity did decrease slowly (or maybe I was so distracted and sleep deprived from the early newborn phase I just didn't notice it as much!).

Good luck girl. Hang in there. It will be a distant memory soon! (I know you want it to be over now, and that is little consolation, but it will be over soon no matter what!)

I had puppps. I ended up taking prednisone because they wouldn't induce without a favourable cervix. I would discuss the possibility of an oral steroid and find out which is more risky. For me, they thought it better to keep me in and put me on the oral steroid (topical was no help - oral + 3-5x daily pine tar soap +so much Sarna kept it survivable).

Honestly, though, puppps is awful. Induce if you need.

Also, FYI, I'm 4.5m post partum and it's still flaring up and down. We went to a dermatologist about it and he said up to a year. But, it's nowhere near as bad. If pregnancy puppps was a 9 or ten, this might be 1 or 2. 3 on a bad day, and only itchy for an hour or two. It's so mild I literally don't care, but in pregnancy I was desperate for relief and sobbing in DH 'a arms

I had post-partum PUPPS, and I would not induce because of it unless I was a little farther along. I had a son at 37 weeks, and there are still risks at giving birth that early. Doctors have redefined full term so that it is 39 weeks and later to reflect those risks. http://www.acog.org/About-ACOG/News-Room/News-Releases/2013/Ob-Gyns-Redefine-Meaning-of-Term-Pregnancy
I would probably give it another week if I were you. Try Pine Tar Soap, Gold Bond, then anti-itch powder. That helped me.

@mrstal: It did take a little time to go away once I gave birth. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly - maybe a few weeks to be gone completely? I remember freaking out when it didn't go away immediately because there is no way I'd want to deal with it long term. My son is 18 months now, and I've had a couple of times since then that it felt like it was coming back. It was always much more mild. I would use the pine tar soap (twice a day is more helpful) and use the lotion when I had the urge to scratch. I really felt like it got so much worse when I gave in and scratched. Both times it went away completely in a few days.
Good luck with everything! I'm sure whatever decision you make will be what's best for your situation.

@ShootingStar: I did try the cream and it worked for maybe half an hour. Not really worth it, unfortunately.

@Chuckles: did it go away after birth for you? I keep seeing conflicting stories.

@jetsa: @Radish: I'm glad to hear some positive induction stories! Thank you both for that.

@erwoo: I've been using it three times a day but only since Friday, I know most people said it takes a while I'm just going nuts waiting for something to work.

@sarac: the steroid cream didn't really work when I used it. I felt relief for maybe half an hour. I'm going to see if my doctor has any other ideas besides inducing at my appointment tomorrow.

The steroid cream is of significantly lower risk to your baby than an induction. I had pupps, it got serious, and I took the steroid. It helped. The home remedies will only work to a certain point.

If you have a favorable cervix, I would absolutely schedule the induction. I have my induction scheduled for this week at 39 weeks 4 days. I was induced at 38 weeks 6 days last pregnancy and it went very well.

@MrsTal: I was induced at 39 weeks due to PIH but it was completely my choice my midwife recommended but left the final chpice up to me. I had an amazing induction and have zero regrets. At some point you have to do what's best for BOTH of you. not exactly the same but close I think.

@MrsTal: If the cream doesn't work, you're miserable, and full term, I'd probably go for it. But to me a c-section isn't the end of the world. Not to say you'll have one, just that is the one consistent reason people want to avoid full term induction.

I had PUPPP, too, so I feel your pain. It was pretty unbearable. It's too bad that some of the home remedies didn't work. Grandpa's pine tar soap and sarna lotion helped me a little, but it was still pretty terrible. I also soaked a washcloth in very cold water and would hold it on the rash when it was especially itchy so that I wouldn't scratch it.
Anyways, I would totally go for the induction since you're so far along. I ended up going into labor at 37+1, so I didn't have a chance to consider it, but knowing how bad PUPPP can be, an induction sounds like the way to go.

I would take the steroid cream. Drugs like Tylenol are category C. Almost no drugs are in Category A. At 38 weeks if your body's not ready, you'll likely end up with a c-section. Which isn't the end of the world (I had one) but most people want to avoid it.

@Little Misters Mom: I should clarify, by next week I mean scheduling the induction for after 39 weeks. Also I did try the prescribed cream on a small area and it only worked for maybe half an hour before the itchiness came back, so the risk didn't seem worth it for such a short time of relief. I'm planning on discussing this all with my doctor at my appointment tomorrow but I guess I'm trying to weigh all my options today, so I can go into my appointment with some clear direction.

Considering the size of your baby (thus feeling like he's fully cooked already) I don't think you're crazy at all. There is the c section risk. Which sucks. But isn't the end of the world.

You're certainly not crazy for wanting it, but only your doctor can really walk you through the risks. If I were in your shoes I'd probably weigh the risks of the steroid cream against the risks of an 38 week induction and go from there. I get the concern over a category C, but also take into account that it's a cream, and the baby is full term already, both of which would tend to make it "safer" than the pure category might indicate. How strongly do you feel about c-sections? If you are open to having one in the event of a failed induction (which is probably the one real risk of going at 38 weeks) then I'd probably do it. I think there are PUPP support groups on babycenter. Hope you find some relief and one way or another it's going to be over soon!

Early last week I noticed my belly was really red especially in the stretch marks and I was itching like crazy. I thought my skin was just dry so I lotioned up several times a day. My DH mentioned it to my doctor at my weekly appointment and he took blood to check for cholestasis. It got progressively worse to the point that I had to go back in Friday and the doc seems to think it's PUPPP, but is waiting on my last blood test to rule out cholestasis, in the meantime he prescribed a steroid cream which is category C and I don't want to use it. Doing research on PUPPP I got every home remedy I could find and have been trying in vain all weekend to get some relief. My arms are covered in the rash and it has spread to my back, knees, and ankles. I am miserable and can't take it. I'm 38 wks 1 day and thinking about asking my doctor about inducing next week since I can't function like this. Is this a stupid idea? I would be willing to wait if I can find some relief in the stuff I'm trying but I don't have a lot of hope. So far I've tried: grandpas pine tar soap, oatmeal baths, baking soda, Sarna lotion, oatmeal lotion, calamine lotion, Benadryl (pill and lotion) cortisone, dandelion root and nettles capsules. The only semi relief is Benadryl in pill form which just makes me pass out. I can't work like that and if I schedule the induction for next week I could take time off this week and continue trying the remedies I have and if it gets better I could always cancel or move the induction. Is that a crazy idea?
