I have a son named Cole and we call him Coley and Coco so you could definitely nickname her something else. I immediately thought of Nyla or Nico.

We have a friend named Nicki whose given name is Veronica, so you could also think about incorporating Nichole through Veronica, Annika, Monica, etc.

We adopted our son from birth and we changed his name but kept his name as a second middle name. The birth mother knew what we were planing on naming him and liked it. He got a name from our family and the middle name she gave him was a family name. I had no problem changing his first name. In the hospital she named him "Chance" and she said it was because she was on birth control so what are the "chances" of getting pregnant. I just couldn't stand it. Now he is ten. He likes being named after people in his adoptive family and his biological family. He likes the connections to both.

I agree with the suggestions of keeping Nichole as the middle name. That would make the transition easier, you can start calling her "Hazel Nichole" and the slowly drop the Nichole as she get used to it.

Growing up a knew a girl named Nichole (not sure of the spelling), and her nickname was Coley (Cole -ee) I always thought it was cool because no one else had that nickname.

I think at that age it is perfectly acceptable to change her name. I like the idea of either choosing something similar or moving Nichole/Nicole to her middle name. I do love Nora or Nola (there's a song called Nola that my mom always played on the piano).

I definitely think you should name her what you want, since you are all the family she has ever had. And I do agree with you that Nichole is fine, but... that’s it. Fine.

I love the name Hazel- my second was very nearly named Hazel but in the last week we decided we didn’t love it with our last name. But it’s one of my favorites. And Hazel
Nichole would be nice. If you are looking for new ideas- do you like Eliza? The latest Hazel I know has a sister named that so I put them together.

Have to say I LOVE the name Hazel. My eyes are hazel, so I felt like I would be naming my daughter after me if I used it as a name, but otherwise it would have been at the top of my list! Also like the idea of moving Nichole to her middle name. Hazel Nichole has a nice ring to it. :)

@Raspberry: Not really any better for me! :(
@wrkbrk: I love this too. Not sure DW will go for it, and I'm not sure she's a Joanna either.
@Corduroy: Thought about that as both Norah and Cora are favorites.
@periwinklebee: I know twins named Cain and Abel! Who does that?! Also, we call N baby all the time. And O calls her "sis," so I think we could be flexible with a change.
@jhd: Thanks! It's helpful to hear from adoptees (or siblings of adoptees!)
@Grace: That's exactly what feels weird to me, but I'm fairly sure there's no heritage or thought behind the name, so I am justifying it that way. Mom was pretty much a mess in the hospital and then disappeared. :(
@pachamama: I LOVE Rowan for a boy or girl. Plus, the meaning works for this little red head. Not sure DW is on board, but I'm going to keep working on it.
@lady baltimore: Love Chloe, but my dog that we just put down was Chloe, and O would for sure remind her sister at all times that she was named after a dog. ;)
@Blythe: Nicanora might be too out there for us! Holly I like but it's our adoption worker's name, so that would feel weird.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: She does respond to Nichole, but she also responds to "baby" and "sis" and various other nicknames, so I think she'd adjust pretty quickly? I hope.
@Pollywog: hahaha exactly. she answers to several things, due to the 3 year old influence. I like Virginia, but I'm not sure DW would go for it.

I think our current leader is Hazel. It just really suits her. Rowan and Mabel are close seconds/thirds.

I'm not a huge fan of Nichole. I agree it's weird to change a kid's name, but my 10 month old regularly answers to Ryder, Marshall, Firefighter Nick, and Oscar (his name is Ryan, but 3yo brother has other ideas). My cousin adopted a much older child (like 17) and she asked to change her name when she got adopted, so I think it's totally fine.

For names, I love Noelle and Nicola for slightly unique N names. Nadine also could work.

For red hair my go to is Virginia, nn Ginger, or Roselle, nn Rosie. I love Roslyn too

If I ever had a girl and didn't have to negotiate with my husband, I'd name her Grace Ella, Sarah Anne,or Mary Jean. They are not popular names, but easily spellable and pronounceable.

@Mrs. Turtle: Nicole is one of my favorite girl names ever. Such an 80s baby, but Nicole and Lauren are my top two names.

The extra “h” doesn’t really bother me since so many people have unique spellings these days, I’d be reluctant to changing her name now if she’s already started to respond to Nichole. My LO at 15 months knew and responded to his name/ name variant-nickname/ two additional nicknames.

Naomi is a beautiful name, another favorite of mine. I also love Natalie.

I looked into Nichole variations on Nameberry, and one name that popped up is Nicanora. It's listed as a Spanish variation of Nicole. Definitely not a name you come across every day, but if you’re adventurous, it’s perhaps a unique way to keep Nichole, but get to Nora?

I also thought I’d throw out the name Holly. It fits the red theme (red holly berries) and it incorporates the HOL from Nichole.

Good luck with your name search. Whatever you land on, I’m sure it will be the perfect fit!

I think I would feel weird changing her name. Like I was denying her her heritage or something. Although, just to be clear, I don’t think there’s anything wrong if you do it. Personally, what I would do is add a middle name and use that every day. Then when she’s older, she can make the decision herself if she wants that to be her legal first name.

Just wanted to chime in and encourage you to make the decision that feels best to you. All of my siblings were adopted and my parents did different things as far as names go depending on how old the child was when adopted. To my knowledge none of my siblings have been upset by changes that were made. I think it’s nice to have the option to add a name from your family or that is meaningful to you.

Norah is one of my favorite names! I like the idea of Colette too mentioned above as a nod to her birth name. I also love some of the other names on your list; lo2 is an Eleanor. Her nn is Elsie, but you could use Nell/Nellie as a nn and nod to her "n"

I get what you mean about the name Nichole too--it's perfectly normal but I wouldn't choose it. For me, there are some names that I feel like were so common in my generation that I would never use them now--I have college-aged students now named Nicole, Lindsey, and Kaitlyn and I cannot for the life of me keep the three of them straight because I know so many people with various spellings that they're totally generic names.... I see each of the students and my brain is just like, "insert generic name..." it's bad, I'm working on it...

@Mrs. Turtle: Chainsaw, sheesh... My mom's a teacher and once had twins named Jesus and Lucifer. Poor kids...

I say change it if you want. My husband, and myself to an extent, called our LO "baby" for a long time. It just sort of stuck after the pregnancy (we didn't name him til we saw him). I don't think he's been at all bothered as we shifted away from that, as obviously it's not a nickname we're keeping :silly: .

@Mrs. Turtle: I like both Nichole and Nora. Since you mentioned that Olivia was more popular than you like I thought I'd chime in as the mother of an "-ora". I thought I was choosing a fairly unique name but in my experience "-ora" has become the female "-aiden". I didn't consider/anticipate how common the sound was. There's always another "-ora" in her class and on Friday she buddied up with two "-ora"'s at the park to make one super confusing group. YMMV in your region. I still love her name.
