I didn't find the infant bucket an item that was so worth it I couldn't have done without it. If I would do it again, I would have used a convertible seat from the beginning. My son never really slept in the car seat and keeping the kid in the car seat for naps and whatnot isn't the best thing in the world. It could cause airway compression so the best position for babies to be sleeping is flat, not sitting up.

I'm so glad we have our infant car seat/travel system. There's nothing I love more than to come home with a baby that fell asleep in the car and just lift her out and into the house so she can finish her nap and I can do something productive.... or lay down.

We live in the suburbs and use it ALL the time- our #1 purchase. He is too small for all of our slings and carriers and stroller right now. It is a must for any restaurant, as he is usually asleep so if I can eat a meal without holding him I am grateful.

And most of all- if he is sleeping, I would rather cut off my arm than wake him up to move him in or out of a car seat when running errands in between feedings!

I agree with all the others above that if you drive a lot, the infant car seat is definitely more convenient. Also, when we go to restaurants, it's so much easier to have her in the car seat than trying to eat while holding her or having her in a carrier.

Ditto to all the ladies above! I live in the burbs and we drive EVERYWHERE which is guaranteed sleepy time for the baby. An infant car seat is probably one of my "must buy" items.

Ditto to @Andrea and @tina-- I think living in the suburbs would mean you would get more use out of it, because you have to drive everywhere. To the store, to most parks, to visit friends and family, to the dr's office, etc.

I agree that in the infant car seat is probably more essential for suburban living than city living! You'll be driving around more than city folk and can take advantage of letting your sleeping baby sleep. If you're in the city, then you might not have a car or you can just leave the baby to continue sleeping in the stroller.

I think the biggest thing is once the baby is sleeping you will not want to wake him/her up....and the convertible carseats are so much bigger and heavier to take out of the car w/ a sleeping baby.

I DEFINITELY recommend the infant seat. My daughter was able to use it for well over a year.

Plus when they are little and fall asleep, you just take the whole seat with you, snap it on the stroller, put it in the shopping cart, or carry it in the house and you don't have to wake them up.

It was especially useful since my daughter was born in January and it was so cold, we would keep her warm and snug in the seat.

It's definitely convenient during the early months, but not necessary. If you're having more than one baby then it might be a good idea to get an infant seat. #2 and beyond can use it too.
We transitioned to a convertible at 7 months so it was a little annoying, but plan on using our infant seat again.

I would also say that unless you take cabs a lot, I would think an infant carseat for the CITY rather than the 'burbs might be unnecessary.

If your baby is average sized, you could use the infant carseat for a year or more. RJ was 90th percentile in weight so he just got too heavy.

I would personally never go without an infant carseat, ESPECIALLY in the 'burbs. In the city the baby can sleep in the carrier or stroller since your mode of transportation is walking or train and you don't have to transfer them. But going in and out of the car, if baby is sleeping, the LAST thing you want to do is wake up the baby to put it in the stroller or carrier. It's so awesome to be able to just lift the carseat out of the car, place it on the snap-n-go, and stroll into the store (or church, or home!) while baby continues to nap. Trust me, especially when they get a little older, it's rare for a kid to keep sleeping if you're pulling them out of the carseat and maneuvering them into a carrier or stroller. Especially if it's cold out! The second you touch them, their eyes snap open and bam, nap over.

I was so sad when we transitioned RJ to the convertible and I had to transfer him every time we got to our destination... he just got too heavy to be able to lift in and out in the carseat. We did a lot of sitting in the car while he slept!

My daughter was in the infant one for over a year, so I didn't think it was a bad purchase. Plus, we got one of the snap and go things so I could just put her infant car seat right on it as a stroller if she was sleeping so I didn't have to wake her up if I was going in the store or whatever. And, if you're somewhere that gets cold, it's nice to be able to get them in the car seat and then covered up before you go outside as opposed to putting them in the seat out in the cold and then getting them covered. I think the convenience is really worthwhile. Of course, if my kid was huge and outgrew it within a few months I might have a different opinion, but I would definitely recommend getting one.

If you live in the 'burbs and hardly ever walk anywhere, is an infant car seat really necessary? They grow out of them so quickly, would it be ridiculous to think when I do have to go somewhere with the baby, I can just remove her from her car seat and put her in a carrier?

Has anyone else *not* purchased an infant car seat and not regretted it?
