LMW used to claw at her ears as her ONLY form of self-soothing. Ugh. We'd find her in the morning with bloodstains all around her head on the crib sheet :( She learned how to pull off mitts (and socks we put on her hands since they stay better than mitts) by biting them and pulling them off, like a boxer. So the only thing we could do is keep her nails as short as possible and file them smooth like you said. Sorry :(

My LO just started doing this at 4 months. He has bad cradle cap so I thought it might be that. He was overtired today though. Hmmm.

My LO used to do this allll the time - started around 4 months and lasted several months! I think it was a comfort thing for him since he didn't suck on a pacifier or his thumb. But oh man he used to scratch his head raw, it was awful. Our doctor finally recommended we use a little Head & Shoulders and that seemed to calm the itching down.

My LO used to do this all the time, and I think it was because she was tired. I've noticed that she has been doing it less these days at 13 months.

I also say overtired. As an infant, My DS would pull his hair when he was overtired.

I am leaning toward this being an overtired/overwhelmed behavior but still a liiiittle worried.

two nights ago my 9 month old started going at her head with both hands when I was trying to get her to sleep (she was overtired). almost like a dog does when they have an itchy head or something, but she was SO mad.

She just got over a 2-week long cold so I'm really hoping it's not an ear infection..no fever or other symptoms. She's also working on the bottom two lateral incisors. So I guess it could be any of the above but man.. the scratches are killing me :(

ETA: she still does it occassionally.
